Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Attention Theory, Second Edition provides details concerning the relevance of all aspects of attention to the world beyond the laboratory. Topic application areas include the design of warning systems to capture attention; attention distractions in the workplace; failures of dividing attention while driving; and the measurement of mental workload while flying. This new edition discusses the implications of VR and AR for human attention. It also covers the treatment of attention-based pedagogical methods used to enhance learning and presents attentional issues in interacting with automation and AI. New chapters include applications of attention to healthcare, education pedagogy, highway safety, and human interaction with autonomous vehicles and other AI systems. The readership for this book is the professional, the researcher, and the student.

Download or read book Attention written by Arthur F. Kramer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of attention in the laboratory has been crucial to understanding the mechanisms that support several different facets of attentional processing: Our ability to both divide attention among multiple tasks and stimuli, and selectively focus it on task-relevant information, while ignoring distracting task-irrelevant information, as well as how top-down and bottom-up factors influence the way that attention is directed within and across modalities. Equally important, however, is research that has attempted to scale up to the real world this empirical work on attention that has traditionally been well controlled by limited laboratory paradigms and phenomena. These types of basic and theoretically guided applied research on attention have benefited immeasurably from the work of Christopher Wickens. This book honors Wickens' many important contributions to the study of attention by bringing together researchers who examine real-world attentional problems and questions in light of attentional theory. The research fostered by Wickens' contributions will enrich not only our understanding of human performance in complex real-world systems, but also reveal the gaps on our knowledge of basic attentional processes.

Book Synopsis The Human as an Optimal Controller and Information Processor by : Sheldon Baron
Download or read book The Human as an Optimal Controller and Information Processor written by Sheldon Baron and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A mathematical model of the human operator in multivariable control tasks is developed by considering the human as a control and information-processing system. The model contains elements for describing the operator's inherent physiological limitations as well as his Instrument-monitoring, data-reconstruction and control behavior. Special emphasis is placed on the instrument-monitoring aspects of the model. The human's limitations are modelled by combining them into an equivalent perceptual time delay and an equivalent observation noise. The main assumption underlying the subsequent theoretical investigations is that the well-trained, well-motivated operator behaves in a near optimal manner, subject to the constraints imposed by the above limitations. Thus, the operator's control behavior is assumed to be that of an ideal feedback controller. The human's data-reconstruction process is chosen so as to obtain a "best" estimate of the state of the controlled element based on information obtained from "sampling" the various instruments. The data reconstructor consists of a Kalman estimator and a predictor in tandem, its structure is fixed but it depends, parametrically, on the sampling behavior. Instrument-monitoring behavior depends explicitly on the control task and on the control actions. Provision is made for the ability to obtain information from the peripheral visual field and there are no restrictions on signal coupling. The visual sampling model also includes means for constraining instrument scanning rates. The specific characteristics of the operator's visual sampling behavior are predicted by solving a nonlinear optimization problem. This problem is precisely formulated and methods for its solution are discussed. By changing the variances of the observational noises it is possible to predict the effects that changes in the visual display panel will have upon the human's sampling behavior. Finally, instrument sampling characteristics for a simple two-axis compensatory tracking task are obtained. The results exhibit the general characteristics one would expect from a human operator performing a similar task."--Summary.
Book Synopsis Attention and Performance XVII by : Daniel Gopher
Download or read book Attention and Performance XVII written by Daniel Gopher and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1966 the first meeting of the Association for the Study of Attention and Performance was held in the Netherlands to promote the emerging science of cognitive psychology. This volume is based on the most recent conference, held in Israel thirty years later. The focus of the conference was the interaction between theory and application. The organizers chose the specific topic, cognitive regulation of performance, because it is an area where contemporary theories of cognitive processes meet the everyday challenges posed by human interactions with complex systems. Present-day technological systems impose on the operator a variety of supervisory functions, such as input and output monitoring, allocation of cognitive resources, choice of strategies, and regulation of cognitive operations. A challenge for engineers and designers is to accommodate the cognitive requirements called for by these systems. The book is divided into four sections: the presentation and representation of information, cognitive regulation of acquisition and performance, consciousness and behavior, and special populations: aging and neurological disorders.
