Download or read book Politics in Central America written by Thomas P. Anderson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1988-04-21 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clear and balanced presentation of the dilemmas associated with each of the four nations. A skillful cultural framework is provided in the first chapter, which serves as an overview. Foreign Affairs A fine study. Anderson's reputation as a scholar and a Latin Americanist will be enhanced when this study has time to make its imprint. American Political Science Review This new volume provides an up-to-date survey of the Central American states involved in the current conflict. While several studies of the individual countries in the region have appeared, there have been no recent attempts at a synthesis of the problems of the area. Politics in Central America fills this gap, analyzing the roots of the current crisis and suggesting solutions to the problems of the region. The author's chief assertion is that the roots of the problems in Central America are not to be found in the East-West struggle but in the competition within each country for control of the scarce natural resources. This crisis in Central America calls for drastic and economic changes. The key question, Anderson claims, is whether or not these changes can be brought about within a democratic framework.

Download or read book Healing Central America – Improving Human Rights, Economic Stability and Rule-of-Law in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras written by Dr. Mark O'Doherty and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-01-27 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forces driving ordinary people to leave their homes and put their lives at risk to get to the US border are deeply rooted in Central America's history of inequality and violence, in which the US has long played a defining role. However, the flow of migrants trying to cross the border illegally is not all blowback from US foreign policy. Much of the poverty, injustice and murder in Central America is homegrown; Guatemala being the poorest country in Central America, where 47% of children are chronically malnourished. Guatemala is also the most dangerous country in the world for environment defenders, with at least 16 killed in 2018, most of them indigenous Mayans; with small criminal elites and corrupt politicians having long prospered at the expense of the populations. Hence combating poverty, injustice and corruption must be made a priority in the region - both for local governments and the International Community - so that peace, prosperity and civil rights can finally be manifested in Central America!
Book Synopsis Post-war Reconstruction in Central America by : Patricia Ardón
Download or read book Post-war Reconstruction in Central America written by Patricia Ardón and published by Oxfam. This book was released on 1999 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed account of the formal and social processes that ended years of conflict in Central America, this study analyses various aspects of conflict resolution: forms of intervention, local participation, and international co-operation. It evaluates the negotiations that took place in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, points out their flaws, and makes recommendations to NGOs for working in conflict. It also looks at 'the bigger picture': how the end of the cold war and the consequent restructuring of the United Nations has changed how we explain and address conflict.
