Book excerpt: The concept of transformation has long been known to the sciences and has been around in the popular vocabulary for several decades. Because it has never been fully developed as a managed process and applied to our organizations, the way in which we have been trying to deal with the complex issues we face today is looking increasingly inadequate. Transformation management, argue the authors of this inspirational book, now provides the opportunity for the application of the first significant world-wide innovation in the way we manage since Drucker put management itself on the map in the 1950s. In a book that draws on seminal theses and practical examples from the four corners of the world, Ronnie Lessem and Alexander Schieffer provide leaders, students of leadership, managers and change agents with a trans-culturally tested, integrated approach to leadership and management. Only through a redefinition of what leadership, management and entrepreneurship amount to, say the authors, can organizations be transformed into sustainable enterprises capable of dealing with the burning issues of our time. Leaders are coming to realise that it is no longer possible for organizations to operate in any sort of isolation from the society and the wider world in which they exist, but paying lip service to notions of either social responsibility or globality is not good enough. From this indispensable book, those whose enterprises are to have any hope of becoming authentically socially responsible or authentically global will learn to understand and activate the process that dynamically links any organization with the society in which it is embedded and that links the local with the global. The practice of transformation management is about creating real value... for organizations, people, and society. This book, from the Transformation and Innovation Series, makes that practice possible.

It shows the enduring values of those principles, as well as the significance of the models, techniques and tools evolved - which may rightly be called classics as these have been propounded by HRM proponents, time tested, and proved permanent. The book covers three major subjects of manage-ment - Human Resource Management (HRM)/Human Resource Development (HRD), Organizational Behaviour (OB), and Organizational Development (OD) - under 18 different themes. What distinguishes the text is that it uses 300 models, techniques, and tools that are well established, practised, and proven in the field of HRM. The practical implications of these techniques are also discussed, enabling the reader to comprehend the concepts with ease. The book, which is a unique blend of theory and practice, would be useful to postgraduate students of management, all those specializing in human resource management, and the professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of original articles by leading practitioners and researchers, this volume examines methods for human resource forecasting and planning to meet the strategic needs of the organization. As the editors note at the outset, changing characteristics of the workforce and new skill demands mean that human resource planning must become an integral part of corporate strategy development and implementation. In order to compete successfully in an era of rapid technological change, organizations must be able to adequately forecast their needs for different types of employees, consider the extent to which current employees have the needed skills, and examine labor force availability. This book describes ways to collect the necessary environmental data and formulate human resource strategies that recognize current and anticipated changes both in the organization and in the environment in which it operates. The volume begins with a discussion of environmental scanning techniques. The contributors demonstrate how to identify environmental trends, including labor force demographics, and how to apply this information to the development of human resource strategies. The second section considers ways to analyze the organization's future human resource needs by examining employee demographics and job attitudes. In Part Three, the contributors describe how organizations formulate human resource strategies in response to environmental trends and organizational goals. The next group of chapters offers examples of the human resource implications of organizational change. This section includes separate chapters on job loss and employee assistance programs and the effects of a corporate merger, as well as two case studies of the relationship between human resource planning and corporate strategic goals. The contributors conclude by describing organizational reactions to changing environments brought about by an aging workforce, work-at-home jobs, new computer and telecommunications technologies, and the increasing cultural diversity of the workforce. Indispensable for human resource managers and corporate planning executives, this book will also be of significant value to researchers and students in human resource and strategic planning programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a new way to approach comparative international development by focusing on time and timing in economic and social development. The UK industrialized over two centuries, and then started to de-industrialize in the late 1960s. Today, the most rapid developers experience aspects of industrialization and de-industrialization simultaneously. It is no longer clear that industrialization offers the path of growth it once did; industrialization has become 'thin.' Demographic and social challenges that earlier developers faced sequentially now come at the same time. Rapid growers experience compression most acutely, but the spatial and temporal fusing of past and present is widespread, affecting high-, middle-, and lower-income countries alike. Timing refers to the differences in historical periods in which development takes place. The geopolitical, institutional and technological environment for countries recently integrated into the global economy has been vastly different from that of the preceding postwar decades of 'embedded liberalism,' although it does contain echoes of the 'first globalization' and 'first financialization' a century ago. The first era of liberalism did not end well, and the second is similarly foundering on the rocks of nationalism and protectionism, as it is being battered by a global pandemic. The authors propose an interdisciplinary conceptual framework based on co-evolving state-market and organization-technology dyads, which will help readers make sense of contemporary development across multiple societies, sectors and geographies, and provide a template for historical comparison.
