Book excerpt: In this publication, recommendations for the Use of dual-stain cytology to triage women after a positive test for human papillomavirus (HPV) are presented. Dual-stain cytology can be used as a triage test in cervical “screen, triage and treat" algorithms for cancer prevention. It is performed on liquid-based cytology (LBC) slides (not on conventional Pap smears) to detect the presence of two proteins: p16 and Ki-67. Recommendation for the general population of women: In a screen, triage and treat approach using HPV Nucleic Acid Tests (NATs) as the primary screening test among the general population of women, WHO suggests using partial genotyping, colposcopy, VIA, cytology or dual-stain cytology to triage women after a positive HPV NATs result. When providing dual-stain cytology to triage women after a positive HPV NAT, WHO suggests: using samples collected by the health worker; and retesting with HPV NATs 24 months after a negative dual-stain cytology result. These are conditional recommendations based on low-certainty evidence for dual-stain cytology as a triage test. No recommendation was made for using dual-stain cytology to triage women living with HIV after a positive HPV DNA test, because evidence on the outcomes of using dual-stain cytology applicable to this population was minimal.

Book excerpt: Human Papillomavirus: Proving and Using a Viral Cause for Cancer presents a steady and massive accumulation of evidence about the role of HPV and prevention of HPV-induced cancer, along with the role and personal commitment of many scientists of different backgrounds in establishing global relevance. This exercise involved years of personal commitment to proving or disproving an idea that aroused initial skepticism, and that still has difficult implications for some. It remains one of the big successes of medicine that exploited both established medical science dating back to the nineteenth century and new molecular genetic science during a time of transition in medicine. Presents a comprehensive, up-to-date review of the role of HPV in cancer from those involved in its study Includes the way evidence on the role and utility of HPV based prevention has been accumulated over almost 40 years Gives a series of vignettes of individual scientists involved in the development of the science of HPV and cancer at different stages and their experiences and reasons for involvement

This book is comprised of 17 chapters which emphasise the need for cervical screening to prevent invasive carcinoma, by diagnosing and treating women with high-grade cervical lesions. The major factors in the occurrence of cervical cancer, such as active metaplasia in the transformation zone, exposure to oncogen, and immune status of the individual are explained in detail. The criteria for a screening test and the various screening techniques available for cervical cancer, such as pap smear, liquid-based cytology, HPV testing, polar probe, laser-induced fluorescence, speculoscopy and cervicography are also discussed. Colposcopy and the use of polarprob, the portable optoelectronic instrument that detects the existence of cervical cancer and precancer, are also described clearly in this concise guide to cervical cancer screening. Key Features Covers major factors influencing the occurrence of cervical cancer Details various techniques for screening Guide to performing, interpreting and logging colposcopy Introduction to use of polarprob in screening 68 full colour images and illustrations

This book was released on 2012 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are a heterogeneous and still growing virus family. Topical research results on the replication cycle and carcinogenic mechanisms allow a better understanding of current prevention strategies. Written by leading experts, this volume of Monographs in Virology provides up-to-date information on the prevention of papillomavirus-induced cancers by prophylactic antiviral vaccines and early detection of precancerous lesions. A major section covers the tremendous clinical burden due to HPV infections: genital warts and laryngeal papillomas, the most notorious cervical cancer, but also further anogenital and tonsillar cancer, the incidence of which increased steeply during the last decades. Additionally, a section on prevention addresses the subject cytology - new concepts of biomarker development, detection of HPV DNA and RNA as well as their use in primary screening for early detection of precancerous lesions. Finally the book closes with a topical discussion of the most intriguing primary prevention of HPV infection by vaccination. As new perspectives for the prevention of HPV-related neoplasia raised great public interest, this book will be of value to clinicians and practitioners in gynecology, dermatology, urology and ENT, to pathologists, laboratory physicians, medical students, and public health authorities.

Book excerpt: Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent cancer among women worldwide, and infection with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) has been identified as the causal agent for this condition. The natural history of cervical cancer is characterized by slow disease progression, rendering the condition in essence preventable and even treatable when diagnosed in early stages. Pap smear and the recently introduced prophylactic vaccines are the most prominent prevention options, but despite the availability of these primary and secondary screening tools, the global burden of disease is unfortunately still very high This book will focus on the clinical and diagnostic aspects of HPV and related disease, highlighting the latest developments in this field.

Book excerpt: In this book, a comprehensive review has been presented to apprise readers regarding the most commonly sexually transmitted infectious agent, Human Papillomavirus; and its role in causation in Carcinoma cervix.Further, we have briefly presented important aspects of diagnosis and management of Carcinoma cervix. We have also tried to compile different tools which have been developed to screen Carcinoma cervix.Greater emphasis has been given to nucleic acid based HPV detection tools, especially in-house protocol, which has been developed to detect HR HPVs; and to screen women at risk of carcinoma cervix. We hope that this book shall help clinicians, pathologists, microbiologists and molecular biologists in the better understanding of the subject and also in dealing with the screening and early diagnosis of carcinoma cervix in women.
