Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Human Nature, and Other Sermons" is a sermon collection by Joseph Butler, an 18th-century English theologian and philosopher. The book is an excellent collection of Butler's moral and theological insights, addressing significant issues of human nature, ethics, and religious thought. Butler digs into the moral and ethical components of human existence in this work, that examines the intricacies of human nature. He argues that people have an innate moral awareness that guides them toward virtue and ethical decision-making. Butler's sermons examine the idea of conscience, its role in impacting how people act, and its compatibility with Christian ideals. The sermons in this collection also address bigger theological issues, such as divine providence, the essence of God, and the compatibility of reason and faith. Butler's literature displays his belief in the compatibility of human reason and religious belief, pushing for a rational and considered approach to religious problems. The intellectual depth and moral clarity of "Human Nature, and Other Sermons" are lauded. Butler's work influenced moral philosophy and Christian theology, and it is still studied and praised for its ongoing relevance in questions of ethics, human nature, and the link between reason and faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on Human Nature: Human Life, and the Nature of Religion I have collected into these Volumes, most of the Sermons and Essays that have been published with my name; and have added some Sermons not before printed, together with Articles from Reviews, and Occasional Discourses. A new arrangement is made, in order to bring the Discourses under certain heads. The title of the Volume first published, "Discourses on Various Subjects," is dropped. The first Series in this Edition, "On Human Nature," embraces several of those Discourses; others are omitted; and others, placed under another Head. Discourses on "Human Life," follow; and then, a number of Discourses, for which I could find no more definite title than "The Nature of Religion." In the first Sermon of the succeeding series, on "Commerce and Business," I have attempted by a revision of the Argument, to reply to an objection sometimes urged against its main doctrine, with regard to the use of superior knowledge, power or opportunity. I have met with those who argued thus: "We have a right to take every advantage of each other; it is perfectly honest to do so, because we have agreed to do so. It is a matter of compact, whose chances and risks we mutually agree to take." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Butler's Fifteen Sermons (1729) is a classic work of moral philosophy, which remains widely influential. The topics Butler discusses include the role of conscience in human nature, self-love and egoism, compassion, resentment and forgiveness, and love of our neighbour and of God. The text of the enlarged and corrected second edition is here presented together with a selection of Butler's other ethical writings: A Dissertation of the Nature of Virtue, A Sermon Preached Before the House of Lords, and relevant extracts from his correspondence with Samuel Clarke. While this is a readers' edition that avoids cluttering Butler's text with textual variants and intrusive footnotes, it comes complete with scholarly apparatus intended to aid the reader in studying Butlers work in depth. David McNaughton contributes a substantial historical and philosophical introduction that highlights the continuing importance of these works. In addition, there are extensive notes at the end of the volume, including significant textual variants, and full details of Butler's sources and references, as well as short summaries of Butler's predecessors, and a selective bibliography. This will be the definitive resource for anyone interested in Butler's moral philosophy.
