Book excerpt: The City and the Country in Early India: A Study of Malwa is about the emergence of urban centres in the sixth century bce, and analyses the processes and spatiality of urbanization, taking Malwa as its case study. Earlier research on urbanism has focussed on either literary or archaeological sources. While literary sources tend to locate the agency for change exclusively in preachers and rulers, in archaeology, the forces of change become nameless and faceless. The study of inscriptions from Malwa helps in restoring agency to common people. The beginnings of urbanism are to be found in the pre-literate past, and, therefore, require an analysis of archaeological data. Using insights from anthropology and studies of early states, in the first half of the book an attempt has been made to look for new ways to account for urbanization. The second half of the book tries to understand the process of urbanization by examining epigraphic and literary sources. The process of the emergence of urban centres created new forms of division of space: urban centres were surrounded by villages which in turn were surrounded by wilderness. This book tries to recover the histories of their complex interrelations. Since caste and kinship are considered central to the world of Indian sociology, an attempt has also been made to understand the relationships between caste, kinship and urbanism. Changes in the attitude of the literati towards the city and the country have also been examined.

Book excerpt: Rajasthan is a land of extremes and the present book indicates the great variety in relief, climate, soil, vegetation, agricultural activity and mineral deposits. Rajasthan is endowed with diversified natural resources. The survival of mankind has always been supported by nature and its resources for centuries man has been exploiting these resources for his survival and development. In the rapid march of progress, the balance that needs to be maintained between exploitation and regeneration was however largely ignored. With the increase in population there has thus been great pressure on these resources leading to their scarcity and degradation. Proper Planning for management of growth is possible only when relevant information of resource, population, availability of social and industrial infrastructure and the trends in growth are known. The aim of the books is comprehension and understanding through functional co-relation Detailed in information is furnished for the purpose of illustrating a point and general functional relationship. The Subject has been treated in its regional aspects and an attempt has been made to preserve a balance between the physical, human and economic aspects in this book. In a book dealing with a state such as Rajasthan where agriculture, animal husbandry and mining industry are of a paramount importance, it is natural that much space has been devoted to these aspects of economic geography. This book provides updated information regarding land, people available resources and infrastructural facilities mainly through maps, graphs, charts and tables. I hope the book will be very useful for planner s researchers, teachers, Students, NGO and all those interested in developmental activities.

Book excerpt: The present title Encyclopaedia of Genetics is an exciting, and dynamic branch of science and offers the finest approach to teaching genetics through the integration of the molecular and chemical subdisciplines. It prepares the students to learn to formulate genetic hypothesis and apply critical thinking skill necessary for problem solving, while also gaining a sense of the social and historical context in which genetics has developed. This text also has a completely novel way to illustrate the one or two experiments in each chapter that are rigorously examined according to the scientific method. It starts with the premise that the syllabus for a university course in genetics should reflect the major research issues of the new millennium rather than those topics that were in vogue during the last decades of nineteenth century. The text covers both the basic and practical aspects of Genetics. Fundamental knowledge is developed within the context of applied relevance. Principles are supplemented with examples. This is done to maintain student interest, which is essential for learning any subject. Volume Details: 1. Genetic Material and Analysis; 2. Physical Basis of Inheritance; 3. Chemical Basis of Inheritance; 4. Origin and Evolution of Genetics; 5. Population Genetics.

Book excerpt: A Premier princely state of Rajasthan, the erstwhile Rajputana (northwest India), till its merger into the Union territory in 1948, Mewar has been celebrated in history and legend. In this far-famed region are represented not only the Rajput chivalry and high sense of honor, but also in their arts, architecture, and fabulous cultural traditions. Developed from the author's intensive research, the book tries to reconstruct the unparalleled, glorious history of (perhaps) the world's oldest ruling family: the house of Mewar -- now called the 'clan of Sisodias', in earliest times 'Guhilots'. A definite and detailed history of the Rajputs is also remarkably readable. This historic book presents the illustrious history of the Sisodia Rajputs who presided over the land of Mewar and the vaunted fortress of Chittor. Part history, part legend, this is an account of the saffron-robed heroes who guarded Mewar's frontiers, defending her against repeated invasions, and valued honor above all else. This book is a colorful narrative - complete with illustrations - about legendary rulers and a tribute to the spirit of the martial Rajput clan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines several theoretical concerns of embodiment in the context of Asian religious practice. Looking at both subtle and spatial bodies, it explores how both types of embodiment are engaged as sites for transformation, transaction and transgression. Collectively bridging ancient and modern conceptualizations of embodiment in religious practice, the book offers a complex mapping of how body is defined. It revisits more traditional, mystical religious systems, including Hindu Tantra and Yoga, Tibetan Buddhism, Bon, Chinese Daoism and Persian Sufism and distinctively juxtaposes these inquiries alongside analyses of racial, gendered, and colonized bodies. Such a multifaceted subject requires a diverse approach, and so perspectives from phenomenology and neuroscience as well as critical race theory and feminist theology are utilised to create more precise analytical tools for the scholarly engagement of embodied religious epistemologies. This a nuanced and interdisciplinary exploration of the myriad issues around bodies within religion. As such it will be a key resource for any scholar of Religious Studies, Asian Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Philosophy, and Gender Studies.
