However, often than not, the struggle to attain fulfilment and happiness in life is met with frustrations due to lack of wherewithal of carrying out the project. It could also be ascribed to the social structure such as bad governance, war, natural deserters, etc., which may hamper the free flow of activities geared towards ones success. In the presence of such frustrations, the victims can become disoriented, antisocial and antisociety. Such situation has serious consequences on peace in the world because this category of people often resort to different social vices like prostitution, intake of hard drugs, kidnapping, terrorism, armed robbery, suicide, et cetera, as the way of survival that spare doom to the society in which they live. It is to address this threat to world peace that, over the years, Fr. Edeh has distinguished himself in empowering people in different categories with little or no concern on tribe, creed, or nationality of those within his empowerment scheme. He has helped thousands of men and women to identify their God-given talents to attain fulfilment and happiness. Many of such people are now living happily on their own while a host of others are undergoing the training now. Interestingly, many of those who have successfully undergone the training in his skills acquisition centre are employers of labour today. Apart from this category of beneficiaries, there are over 12, 743 workers who are working in different establishments of Fr. Edeh and in this way fulfilled in their lives. Fr. Edehs remote conviction for venturing into human empowerment is to contribute his quota to the global project of world peace. It is his belief that world peace can only be attained when individual men and women are enjoying peace in their heartswhen hunger, poverty, diseases, frustration, illiteracy, and unemployment have been reduced to their barest minimum or even eradicated. This book therefore shows clearly how Fr. Prof. Edeh has achieved so much in empowering our teaming youths and this bringing peace in their hearts and thus peace in the world.

It is estimated that by 2030—the horizon set by the international community for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals—more than half of the world’s poor will be living in countries affected by high levels of violence. Information and communication technology, population movements, and climate change are also creating shared risks that must be managed at both national and international levels. Pathways for Peace is a joint United Nations†“World Bank Group study that originates from the conviction that the international community’s attention must urgently be refocused on prevention. A scaled-up system for preventive action would save between US$5 billion and US$70 billion per year, which could be reinvested in reducing poverty and improving the well-being of populations. The study aims to improve the way in which domestic development processes interact with security, diplomacy, mediation, and other efforts to prevent conflicts from becoming violent. It stresses the importance of grievances related to exclusion—from access to power, natural resources, security and justice, for example—that are at the root of many violent conflicts today. Based on a review of cases in which prevention has been successful, the study makes recommendations for countries facing emerging risks of violent conflict as well as for the international community. Development policies and programs must be a core part of preventive efforts; when risks are high or building up, inclusive solutions through dialogue, adapted macroeconomic policies, institutional reform, and redistributive policies are required. Inclusion is key, and preventive action needs to adopt a more people-centered approach that includes mainstreaming citizen engagement. Enhancing the participation of women and youth in decision making is fundamental to sustaining peace, as well as long-term policies to address the aspirations of women and young people.

It is obvious from all indications that the driving force behind these wars are either quest for peace, social justice, political emancipation, etc. Regrettably, instead of peace, these wars have rather brought about hatred, fear, mutual suspicion, and perpetual agitation of the unknown. Consequently, even those who claim to be pursuing the courses of peace through war have found themselves in a more confused state because they live in fear of the vanquished that could turn against them any day. Those who have been conquered also live in fear as the victor becomes arrogant and inconsiderate. Realizing that the world is in dire need of peace, the general assembly of the United Nation Organisation (UNO) resolved on September 7, 2001, to observe September 21 as the International Peace Day. The assembly deemed it necessary, for the sake of peace, to observe that day as a day of ceasefire and non-violence. This was a way of bringing to public awareness the necessity of peace. The desire for peace was evident in that a number of agencies were founded by UNO to promote and foster peaceful coexistence among nations. But the question that still remains unanswered is, what are the achievements of these agencies over the years? It is obvious that warring nations even keep killing themselves on the eve of the International Peace Day. What a tragedy! Fr. Edeh observes that peace can be enthroned if and only if the dignity and essence of man is cared for, loved, and respected. For him, the dignity and essence of man stem from the fact that man is created by God who is good in se. Hence, man is good, that is, Mmadi. To fully realize the ontological goodness of man, Edeh insists that African philosophy should not be thought of in terms of theoretical and rational speculation but a lived philosophy of African culture, language, and religious background, which must be expressed in practical terms. Thus, the primary aim of this mission of practical and effective charity is to bring peace to the world by bringing peace to the heart of individuals who are abjectly poor, sick, marginalized, unemployed, and uneducated irrespective of race, colour, creed, social status, religion, or physical condition. This book therefore contains Fr. Edehs understanding of man as a dignified being because of his participation in the being of his creator (God).This concept of man stems from the African philosophy, which is as practical as it is theoretical. Consequently, pursuing peace, according to Edeh, has to go beyond just holding of conferences and presenting long speeches. He maintains that stakeholders in this all-important venture must put down certain concrete realities that will better the fate of man. His role model here is worth imitating if only world peace is to be truly realized.

Book excerpt: Since the two Hague (Netherlands) multilateral peace conferences of 1899 and 1907, the fundamental issue of world peace and its long-term realization has engaged scholars, diplomats, statesmen, and students of international relations. This book presents a new endeavor in this direction through a collection of papers selected from the recent conferences of the Canadian Peace Research Association and independent scholars. Descriptive, analytical, constructive and balanced ideas and solutions in this text represent alternatives for the global community to be collectively secure and peaceful. This volume examines world peace in its foundational, descriptive, conceptual, and prescriptive aspects, and as a social and human concept in positive and negative contexts, including: the nonviolent perspective of peace; women theorists on peace and war; empowerment of women as peacemakers; and, peace research and education under siege. On violence and war, the topics included are the theory of violence, the new faces of war, including military robots, electromagnetic and information weapons, the cyber warfare and the militarization of neuroscience. In the area of case studies, Iran and nuclear deterrence, the Baha’i faith and Iran; the Western Sahara, Sudan and South Sudan, and the challenges of a Palestinian Nation are analysed. In addition, there is focus on the need to establish a Department of Peace in Canada and an attempt to seek establishment of world peace through direct democracy. This book will advance an understanding of the historic struggle and failures, as well as the accomplishments and shortcomings for peaceful change and a just world order. It will be of direct interest to students of political science, diplomacy, history, social science, international law, human rights, and other cognate disciplines.

Book excerpt: This thesis is an evaluative study of how the Young Women for Peace and Leadership program has empowered young women in the Democratic Republic of Congo to become agents of change. The research seeks to understand the impact of the program from the recipients' perspective - from a localized peacebuilding approach. The purpose of the Young Women for Peace and Leadership program in the Democratic Republic of Congo is to enable hundreds of young women to understand their full potential and be free to advocate for themselves in their communities, throughout this research the program's aim is tested and evaluated. An objective of the program is to mobilize young women through human rights education to promote women's human rights in conflict-affected areas. This study contributes to understanding the role of human rights education and training in empowering young women in conflict-affected areas which will in turn assist in the implementation of the women, peace and security agenda. In its findings, the research identifies three key areas that served to strengthen their identity, agency, and hope. Throughout this thesis, these three themes are discussed in the context of the program's participants and the observed impacts on their personal, home, and community lives.
