Book Synopsis The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights and International Law by : Rachel Murray
Download or read book The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights and International Law written by Rachel Murray and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2000-08-18 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, established in 1987, was the third regional instrument, after the European and American systems, for the promotion and protection of human rights. This book, drawing on the jurisprudence and practice of the Commission, challenges the applicability of international law to the African situation. Following an examination of the evolution of the African Charter and the status of ratification, Murray questions the opposing dichotomy approach of international law. Her critical analysis covers the notion of the state, the issue of personality and the application of the international law distinctions between war and peace and judicial and amicable disputes. The experience and approach of the African Commission is compared with that of other regional and international bodies, leading to the conclusion that a more holistic approach to international law is required if human rights are to be adequately protected. In addition to making an important contribution to legal scholarship on the subject of the Commission this book will serve as a reference work, a textbook and an invaluable practitioners tool.

Book Synopsis Bitumens and Bitumen Emissions, and Some N- and S-heterocyclic Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by : IARC Working Group on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans
Download or read book Bitumens and Bitumen Emissions, and Some N- and S-heterocyclic Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons written by IARC Working Group on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2013 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the IARC Monographs provides evaluations of the carcinogenicity of bitumens and their emissions, the N-heterocyclic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons benz[a]acridine, benz[c]acridine, dibenz[a,h]acridine, dibenz[a,j]acridine, dibenz[c,h]acridine, carbazole and 7H-dibenzo[c,g]carbazole, as well as the S-hetrocyclic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons benzo[b]naphtho[2,1-d]thiophene and dibenzothiophene. Bitumens are produced by distillation of crude oil during petroleum refining, and also occur naturally. Bitumens can be divided into six broad classes, according to their physical properties and specifications required for different applications. The major use (about 80%) of bitumens is for road paving; other uses include roofing, waterproofing, sealing and painting. The term "bitumen" should not be confused with "asphalt", which refers to the mixture of bitumen (4-10% by weight), small stones, sand and filler used for road paving. Bitumens are complex mixtures that contain a large number of organic chemical compounds. Application of bitumens may generate emissions (fumes and vapours) that may contain, among volatile and non-volatile compounds, a number of known or probable carcinogens. An IARC Monographs Working Group reviewed epidemiological evidence, animal bioassays, and mechanistic and other relevant data to reach conclusions as to the carcinogenic hazard to humans of various occupations that entail exposure to bitumens and bitumen emissions, including road paving, roofing, and application of mastic asphalt, and to various heterocyclic polycyclic aromatic compounds.

Book Synopsis Reproductive Rights as Human Rights by : Zakiya Luna
Download or read book Reproductive Rights as Human Rights written by Zakiya Luna and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reveals both the promise and the pitfalls associated with a human rights approach to the women of color-focused reproductive rights activism of SisterSong How did reproductive justice—defined as the right to have children, to not have children, and to parent—become recognized as a human rights issue? In Reproductive Rights as Human Rights, Zakiya Luna highlights the often-forgotten activism of women of color who are largely responsible for creating what we now know as the modern-day reproductive justice movement. Focusing on SisterSong, an intersectional reproductive justice organization, Luna shows how, and why, women of color mobilized around reproductive rights in the domestic arena. She examines their key role in re-framing reproductive rights as human rights, raising this set of issues as a priority in the United States, a country hostile to the concept of human rights at home. An indispensable read, Reproductive Rights as Human Rights provides a much-needed intersectional perspective on the modern-day reproductive justice movement.
