Book Synopsis Hull's Fishing Heritage by : Alec Gill
Download or read book Hull's Fishing Heritage written by Alec Gill and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2003-09-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: True stories of an English fishing community and its families, from street games and superstitions to the dangers of shipwrecks and war—includes photos. Survivors of a wrecked trawler stagger ashore in Iceland during the bitter winter of 1910 in a hair-raising tale based upon Skipper Brewer’s handwritten log. Another skipper, “Mad” Rilatt, outwits German U-boats in the First World War. A suicide mission to war-torn Norway is undertaken in 1940 aboard a former Hull trawler. Amy Johnston, who flew to Australia single-handed, is revealed as a Hessle Road girl. And “Cowboys of the Arctic Circle” shows how Hollywood influenced the young trawler lads. The fishing community of Hessle Road in Hull represents a unique breed of people who endured hardship from the elements in times of peace—and danger from the enemy in times of war. Within the world of the fishing families of Hull is a whole universe of humanity. Based upon interviews and three decades of research, a range of colorful tales are presented in Hull’s Fishing Heritage.
Download or read book Beyond Trawlertown written by Jo Byrne and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Trawlertown takes a journey through the British distant-water fishery and its port-city connections in an era of disruption. In 1976, defeat in the Anglo-Icelandic Cod Wars saw the British trawling fleet excluded from their traditional hunting grounds. Combining with wider global factors, the move brought an end to long-established trawling practices, with profound social, economic and cultural repercussions. Through a case study of the port of Hull, oral history and archival research explore the challenges, responses and legacy of rapid change. Although the emphasis is on Hull, this is far from a local history. Hull’s position among the world leading distant-water pioneers gives the story international significance. Focusing on memory, lived experience and place, the book goes beyond established narratives. Personal acts of remembering offer cultural perspectives on how global events and marine policy impact upon the seafaring communities that live with the consequences. The Cod Wars signaled an end, yet amid the disruption there were also new beginnings. And in the wake of an active fishery, the rhythms of the past continue to resonate in the negotiation of fishing heritage within the contemporary city. Through the convergence of time, place and memory, this holistic narrative of interweaving stories reveals the intricacies of our human interaction with the marine environment and the aftermath when its threads are broken.

Book Synopsis The Royal Navy and Fishery Protection by : Jon Wise
Download or read book The Royal Navy and Fishery Protection written by Jon Wise and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-30 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first recorded mention of British ships protecting of fishing vessels in the late fourteenth century through to recent controversies over the change in emphasis to border patrols and overseas deployments, the story of the Royal Navy’s ‘Cinderella Fleet’ involves many dramatic incidents; until now, however, there has never been a book dedicated to the subject. Naval historian Jon Wise’s new work will rectify this omission. Historically there have been two main reasons why protecting fishing vessels was so important: first, fish have always constituted an essential part of the nation’s diet while, secondly, fishermen have been an important source of skilled personnel for the Royal Navy itself. It is claimed that the Fishery Protection Squadron (FPS) is the oldest in the fleet, pre-dating the formal creation of the Navy itself in the early part of the sixteenth century, yet it still remains comparatively little-known. The Squadron’s most famous operations were the ‘Cod Wars’ of 1958–76, but for six centuries it has been engaged in the many important tasks of protection and policing of fishing fleets, though more recently it has turned its attention to patrolling oil and gas fields, overseeing quotas and sustainability, and policing the ongoing disagreements over who can fish where and when. The author covers subjects as diverse as the battles with the Dutch for dominance in the North Sea, the protection of fishing on the eastern seaboard of America, and the role of the Squadron in the two World Wars. Containing many first-hand accounts, this thought-provoking narrative will be of particular interest to all those RN personnel who have served in the Squadron, and is set to become the definitive account of this vital but often unsung component of Britain’s naval forces, and its impact on national life.
