For all the 10 years of her life, H&à has only known Saigon: the thrills of its markets, the joy of its traditions, the warmth of her friends close by, and the beauty of her very own papaya tree. But now the Vietnam War has reached her home. H&à and her family are forced to flee as Saigon falls, and they board a ship headed toward hope. In America, H&à discovers the foreign world of Alabama: the coldness of its strangers, the dullness of its food, the strange shape of its landscape, and the strength of her very own family. This is the moving story of one girl's year of change, dreams, grief, and healing as she journeys from one country to another, one life to the next.

Book excerpt: Irv and Mary Reiss (aka Dad and Mom) wrote this book as two letters per day for fifteen months from late 1943 through March 1945. Friends and relatives added more letters to bring the total to nearly 1,000. Virtually all of their letters ended with "I love you very very much" and "I miss you very very much." It's easy to empathize with their frustrations and anxieties about being separated and worried, especially with the birth and nurturing of their first child Stephen (aka me) in June 1944. This book title of From Burma With Love is an understatement. Irv Reiss served in the US Army from June 27, 1941 until September 17, 1945 for a total of 4 years, 2 months, and 20 days. Foreign service in India and Burma (Myanmar) was 1 year, 1 month, and 23 days. The foreign service in Burma was very intense and is the heart of this book -- hence the name, From Burma With Love. Irv was a labor officer along the Ledo Road from August 28, 1944 until December 11, 1944. His job was to hire and feed and pay several thousand native laborers (and a few elephants) to help build that road from Ledo, India to Mongyu, Burma. Read his letter of October 7, 1944.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the small town of Santa Crescente, where the surf meets murder, a young boy rises above the waves of despair as he faces life without a mother and watches his father stand trial for her murder. Alberto, almost thirteen, finds a small charm on a walk with nature. His aging grandfather sends him to school while secretly using the charm to reopen his daughter's case of hit and run. Tomas frequently reminisces on the past and faces his own coming of age as the search for the truth begins. The diminutive family makes hard times seem like fun in this heartwarming tale of tackling life's most extreme challenges. Novelist Barbara Young explores modern literature through her varied use of characters. Placing the tradition up against romantic and modern standards, she blends the genres into a central character, Alberto, and examines the changing principles of writing. She sets her young boy in the midst of tragedy, challenging his insight and his wit to see if he can stand alone amid the great forces who have given him life. But the question still remains. Will he bow to the strict rules of tradition, remain fixated in a tragic romantic stupor, or will he flit away with the fast-paced words of the modern day?

Book excerpt: When the year started, I had one goal-make my AP classes count and keep my grades up. Both my focus and my grades started wobbling. Dating my best friends came with perks like hugs, kisses, and invitations to dances, but it also came with cons in the form of vindictive posts, hate mail, and vandalism of my car.I asked if it could get any worse, and I guess I got my answer. My college essays suck.My mother and I are racing toward a collision. My secret admirer might turn out to be a real friend. My dance partner wants to walk away to preserve our friendship. My best friend demanded I keep no more secrets. My first offered to move in with me.My second? he's got my back. They all do.But what brought us together seems to be tearing us apart and I can't jeopardize those friendships.I won't.I thought losing them was the worst thing, but losing even one? it might be the change we can't survive. The real key here isn't what do I want? it's am I willing to fight for it?P.S. I still need to get a damn dress.*Please note this is a reverse harem and the author suggests you always read the forward in her books. Contains some bullying elements, mature situations, and is recommended for 17+. This is the third in a series and the story will continue through future books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extraordinary life story of the celebrated artist and writer, as told through four decades of intimate letters to her beloved mother Barbara Chase-Riboud has led a remarkable life. After graduating from Yale’s School of Design and Architecture, she moved to Europe and spent decades traveling the world and living at the center of artistic, literary, and political circles. She became a renowned artist whose work is now in museum collections around the world. Later, she also became an award-winning poet and bestselling novelist. And along the way, she met many luminaries—from Henri Cartier-Bresson, Salvador Dalí, Alexander Calder, James Baldwin, and Mao Zedong to Toni Morrison, Pierre Cardin, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and Josephine Baker. I Always Knew is an intimate and vivid portrait of Chase-Riboud’s life as told through the letters she wrote to her mother, Vivian Mae, between 1957 and 1991. In candid detail, Chase-Riboud tells her mother about her life in Europe, her work as an artist, her romances, and her journeys around the world, from Western and Eastern Europe to the Middle East, Africa, the Soviet Union, China, and Mongolia. By turns brilliant and naïve, passionate and tender, poignant and funny, these letters show Chase-Riboud in the process of becoming who she is and who she might become. But what emerges most of all is the powerful story of a unique and remarkable relationship between a talented, ambitious, and courageous daughter and her adored mother.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a Christian mother, I try to teach my daughters lessons of God's love and grace. However, as they grow, I find my girls are the ones teaching me God-sized lessons. I’ve learned to throw out my plans and live by faith. I’ve learned to earnestly pray and wait expectantly for God’s response. I’ve learned to listen for God’s still, small voice. I’ve learned to roll up my sleeves and be a “fisher of men.” I’ve learned to seek God’s blessings in the practical day-to-day experiences of life. I hope you are drawn into these devotions of love and laughter. This compilation of true tales contains honest confessions, humor, and scriptural wisdom. May you laugh out loud at my foibles but ultimately realize when we are weak, God is strong. He loves us unconditionally, and His grace is sufficient.
