Book excerpt: Tiling theory is an elegant branch of mathematics that has applications in several areas of computer science. The most immediate application area is graphics, where tiling theory has been used in the contexts of texture generation, sampling theory, remeshing, and of course the generation of decorative patterns. The combination of a solid theoretical base (complete with tantalizing open problems), practical algorithmic techniques, and exciting applications make tiling theory a worthwhile area of study for practitioners and students in computer science. This synthesis lecture introduces the mathematical and algorithmic foundations of tiling theory to a computer graphics audience. The goal is primarily to introduce concepts and terminology, clear up common misconceptions, and state and apply important results. The book also describes some of the algorithms and data structures that allow several aspects of tiling theory to be used in practice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did two national movements—which both share the same national ethos based on territorial and human elements and the same history—fail to reach an agreement that would unite their forces to realize their aspirations? Both sides recall the Nakba (catastrophe), the term for the defeat in the 1948 war and the subsequent Palestinian exodus. They also both emphasize issues such as the victimization of refugees, widows, and orphans; the sanctity of Jerusalem and Palestine; the contributions of shuhadaa (martyrs) to the national struggle still in progress; and the suffering of the prisoners in Israeli jails. Despite this joint confrontation with the same opponent—Israel—Fatah leaders (the organization whose people are the foundation of the Palestinian Authority) and Hamas have failed to find a path to reconciliation. Examining the Palestinian internal question from an original angle, The Fatah-Hamas Rift analyzes the many rounds of negotiations and seeks to explain this failure, with a focus on the decade after 2007.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s amazing how dominant information is in the modern world. In fact, it’s so dominant that it begs the question, “What if information does not only define and shape our world—what if it is in fact reality”? The 1999 film The Matrix and its sequels were predicated on just this idea. Of late, the sultans of Silicon Valley have become obsessed with this idea, which is known as the simulation hypothesis. Elon Musk himself has remarked, “There’s a billion-to-one chance we’re living in base reality.” Perhaps information doesn’t just define and shape our reality. Perhaps it’s entangled in the fabric of reality through the mind of the observer. Consider the philosophical thought experiment: if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? It takes a mind to experience reality. In this book, I chronicle the journey that led me to discover the missing link between science and spirituality: the information-bit. Legendary theoretical physicist John Wheeler’s “it-from-bit” theory and my own Quantum Mind model are ultimately rooted in the same thing: data. Wheeler suggested that the reality of physics —the “it”—is based on patterns of information, or “bits.” I theorize that our actions in the real world unfold in sync with the underlying information-thought blueprints that exist in our mind. Buddha once said, “The mind is everything. What you think, you become.” This bi-directional dialogue across the mind–body connection may well occur at the Planck scale, where the transition between quantum physics—the bit—and classical physics—the it—operates. But where do the mind and body meet? Purpose, which emerges from knowing oneself, unifies the wisdom of the East with the pragmatism of the West. The energy derived from what has meaning to the self is the fuel that allows individuals to manifest in the physical reality (via the body) the bit arrangement contained in the micro realm of their mind. If its point of origin is love, this route leads to inner peace and harmony and draws a vector unifying the mind, heart, and body.

Book excerpt: Parallel computing has been the enabling technology of high-end machines for many years. Now, it has finally become the ubiquitous key to the efficient use of any kind of multi-processor computer architecture, from smart phones, tablets, embedded systems and cloud computing up to exascale computers. _x000D_ This book presents the proceedings of ParCo2013 – the latest edition of the biennial International Conference on Parallel Computing – held from 10 to 13 September 2013, in Garching, Germany. The conference focused on several key parallel computing areas. Themes included parallel programming models for multi- and manycore CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs and heterogeneous platforms, the performance engineering processes that must be adapted to efficiently use these new and innovative platforms, novel numerical algorithms and approaches to large-scale simulations of problems in science and engineering._x000D_ The conference programme also included twelve mini-symposia (including an industry session and a special PhD Symposium), which comprehensively represented and intensified the discussion of current hot topics in high performance and parallel computing. These special sessions covered large-scale supercomputing, novel challenges arising from parallel architectures (multi-/manycore, heterogeneous platforms, FPGAs), multi-level algorithms as well as multi-scale, multi-physics and multi-dimensional problems._x000D_ It is clear that parallel computing – including the processing of large data sets (“Big Data”) – will remain a persistent driver of research in all fields of innovative computing, which makes this book relevant to all those with an interest in this field.
