Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The way you show up in digital spaces communicates your brand—whether you intend it or not. With the ease of digital communication at anyone’s fingertips and many professionals transitioning to work-from-home, the way an individual communicates online is more important than ever before. Keynote speaker and communication coach Dr. Ali Atkison’s latest guide for personal success, How’s Your Computer-side Manner? explains how to blend one’s “in-person” self with their digital self, in order to put their best foot forward in an ever-changing digital landscape. Digital communication is an absolute necessity for today’s working professionals—especially for those who may never meet their colleagues in person due to the rise in remote-work opportunities. Dr. Ali Atkison believes that it’s time to end the false delineation between who someone is in-person versus who they are online. Too many proceed with mistaken assumptions about what shapes their communication style and their communication choices, and without the clarity of why we do what we do, it is difficult to make more well-informed decisions. How’s Your Computer-side Manner? explores the 9 common mistakes today’s professionals often make in their digital communications—and the negative consequences that can result from those mistakes, from being left off of projects and out of meetings, to being placed on performance-improvement plans, to losing respect and a sense of community with colleagues. Dr. Atkison explains how these mistakes can happen and their impact, while providing easy-to-employ strategies for mitigating these mistakes and improving online communication.

Book excerpt: The human mind has two main intelligences, the conscious and the subconscious, yet this is only a scientific observation, meant to define what you access consciously in your mind and what you do not. While you want to know everything about the human mind, in order to access everything, but how can you, when you cannot even define it? Since there is more to the human mind than what psychology offers, and you can certainly tell, since it is always in your mind, but never in textbooks. The two main human intelligences are subdivided into further intelligences, which also include their own inner intelligences, and it is relevant to know everything. Because your subconscious intelligence has its own primal subconscious intelligences, specialized in the entirety of your bodily activity, as eating, recovery, socialization, reproduction, development, security, learning, cooperation, wellbeing, and interconnectivity. But are these your primal intelligences, or you are these primal intelligences altogether? Who or what exactly are you? From a cognitive perspective, you may identify yourself with your conscious intelligence, since this offers you awareness and conscious reasoning. You are certainly aware of all subconscious intelligences stated above, yet there are more human intelligences interacting with you and with your entire cognitive system continuously, with some exceeding the human mind altogether. Additionally, you may always employ artificial and consensual human intelligences to enhance your experience and achievement in life, at a significant cost, since it takes from your natural fulfillment. And in this manner, you live your life through many intelligences even unknowingly, pleasantly or not, as these send you your needs and feelings continuously, and this is all that you know. Apart from needs, feelings, reasoning, and awareness, the human intelligences offer a variety of interfaces, identities, selves, and companions to use throughout life, you may identify them with ease since they are in your mind while others can reach beyond, and it is significant to know them, as this adds to your complexity and uniqueness in life. Who are you? You know well your conscious intelligence since you control it, while you are interested in the subconscious intelligence, since it remains out of your reach, it governs you from the shadows of your mind, and if you are not careful, it ruins your life since it can go against your will, making everything rather challenging and unexpected. And if you only knew more about your conscious and unconscious main human intelligences, then you were certainly more fulfilled and more successful in life. This book studies the human intelligences as these inhabit, form, and maintain the human mind, in all details and from all perspectives. You have the chance to identify and understand all your intelligences, allowing you to reason and behave in the most adequate manner toward achieving your harmony, meaning, and fulfillment in life and in the world.

Book excerpt: New technologies are transforming healthcare work and changing how patients interact with healthcare providers. As artificial intelligence systems, robotics, and data analytics become more sophisticated, some clinical tasks will become obsolete and others will be reconfigured. While it is not possible to predict these developments precisely, it is important to understand their inevitability and to prepare for the changes that lie ahead. Without Compassion, There Is No Healthcare argues that compassion must be upheld as the bedrock and guiding purpose of healthcare work. Emerging technologies have the potential to subvert this purpose but also to enable and expand it, creating new conduits for compassionate care. Cultivating these benefits and guarding against potential threats will require vigilance and determination from healthcare providers, educators, leaders, patients, and advocates. The contributors to this book show the way forward, bringing a diverse range of expertise to confront these challenges. Avoiding platitudes and simple dichotomies, they examine what compassion in healthcare means and how it can be practised, now and in the uncertain future. Without Compassion, There Is No Healthcare is a call to action. Drawing together a decade of evidence and insight generated by a community of leading scholars and practitioners committed to promoting compassionate care, it offers steady principles and practices to steer the way through times of technological change.

Book excerpt: What is more significant to develop in life, your mind or your body? Both are nice to privilege, maintain, and develop, since they are both important. And if this is the case, then why do you see people taking care only of their bodies? Why are you always more desirable in society through your bodily appearance and through your social influence than through your intelligence, creativity, and other cognitive abilities? Why can you not find in the media, entertainment, and in society people engaged in a continuous development, but remaining preoccupied with addictions, bodily needs, continuous servitude, and social competition? And now, if you had the chance to develop as intensely as you could, what exactly would you enhance the most? Because throughout life, people neglect to develop important aspects related to their mind and bodies, while privileging other activities instead, only because these happen to render them happier, more popular, and therefore more successful, in a stereotypical manner. But how exactly do you know how to develop? How can you even tell what is pertinent to do in life? You already know all the legal, moral, social, and religious beliefs and tendencies of what to do and how to behave and develop, but you cannot even follow them, or not entirely, since you have other things to do, as everybody else. And now, by engaging in all addictions, entertainment, and other irrelevant activities, you take away from your own development and fulfillment. If you can even identify your own meaning and fulfillment in life, besides what you see around. What can you do? Reason, at the third intelligent human level, through the extraordinary human mind, if you can ever understand the human mind in the first place. Because all knowledge provided to you consensually by the current science stands at the first, servitude, ideological level, while all physiological tendencies coming from the human body are at the second, animal level, remaining incompatible. You may still reason and develop through your human mind, yet you have to be able to identify and remove all irrelevant and harmful beliefs, stereotypes, and entire ideologies in order to be able to reason accurately. We notice now a discrepancy between people’s meaningful, adequate development, and the consensual behavior demanded by others and meant for servitude, indoctrination, and social acceptance, coming for stereotypical purposes. However, can you even define the adequate, the meaningful, and the proper human development and how this should take place? You can always trace it, if you can ever identify the actual accurate human meaning in life and in this world. This book studies the human development at cognitive, social, higher, and physical levels, in order to help you learn how to develop your mind, body, and intelligences along with all their cognitive abilities. This study is done from objective, cognitive, and behavioral perspectives, at the levels of your mind, body, higher self, and much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The computing technology on which we are now so dependent has risen to its position of ascendency so rapidly that few of us have had the opportunity to take a step back and wonder where we are headed. This book urges us to do so. Taking a big-picture perspective on digital technology, Living with Computers leads the reader on a whistle-stop tour of the history of information and information technology. This journey culminates in a deep exploration into the meaning and role of computers in our lives, and what this experience might possibly mean for the future of human society – and the very existence of humanity itself. In the face of the transformative power of computing, this book provokes us to ask big questions. If computers become integrated into our bodies, merging with the information processing of our very DNA, will computing help to shape the evolution of biological life? If artificial intelligence advances beyond the abilities of the human brain, will this overturn our anthropocentrism and lead to a new view of reality? Will we control the computers of the future, or will they control us? These questions can be discomforting, yet they cannot be ignored. This book argues that it is time to reshape our definition of our species in the context of our interaction with computing. For although such science-fiction scenarios are not likely to happen any time soon – and may, in fact, never happen – it is nevertheless vital to consider these issues now if we wish to have any influence over whatever is to come. So, humans, let’s confront our possible destiny! James W. Cortada is a Senior Research Fellow at the Charles Babbage Institute at the University of Minnesota. He holds a Ph.D. in modern history and worked at IBM in various positions for 38 years, including in IBM’s management research institute, The IBM Institute for Business Value (IBV). He is the author of over a dozen books on management, and nearly two dozen books on the history of information technology. These include the Springer title From Urban Legends to Political Fact-Checking: Online Scrutiny in America, 1990-2015 (with William Aspray).
