Presumed dead, he is blamed for the deaths of band members and crew. Forced into hiding, a ghost of his former self, Devon watches other musicians perform at his club. Then, one day, he hears her voice. Cara Friday pays homage to her dead idol by emulating Devon's style and performing his music. Discovered by the manager of Dead Dogs Howl, Cara is groomed to keep Devon's career alive, singing only his songs. How long will Devon's ghost haunt her? How long can she be his voice without losing her own? But someone is watching over Cara Friday's career. Someone in the shadows waits and listens. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While they are discussing the possible illnesses they may have, Jerome, Harris, and George all realize they suffer from the same thing—working too much. Upon the realization, the three best friends decide that they must go on a vacation. After rejecting the ideas of a sea trip or country stay, because Jerome doesn’t like the sea, and Harris finds the country to be dull, the men decide on a boat trip. With their bags packed and with the company of Jerome’s dog, Montmorency, the friends set off on a boat traveling along the Thames River. They pass notable landmarks and muse about them, questioning their importance, appearance, and origins. Memories are recalled and shared with embellishments. The three men enjoy each other’s company until the vacation takes turns that they could never expect. With unpredictable weather, comedic pitfalls, and wild humor, no outcome is impossible on this chaotic vacation. Facing their own shortcomings, flaws, and the uncontrollable weather, Jerome, Harris, and George must work together to remain in good spirits and find the silver linings so they can still enjoy their vacation. Though originally intended to be a travel guide, the witty jokes, humorous diversions, and realistic characters portrayed in Three Men in a Boat stole the focus of the novel. Based off author Jerome K. Jerome’s real-life experiences, Three Men in a Boat is a comedy that has stood the test of time. With undated jokes and hilarity, Jerome’s comedic work of escapism, Three Men in a Boat, remains to seem fresh and witty over one hundred years later. Three Men in a Boat is brought back to life with a modern font and a new, eye-catching design. This classic comedy is an essential to any fun collection. Jerome K. Jerome’s Three Men in a Boat offers a short escape from reality and entertainment from even the most unexpected adventures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Beckett and the Theatre of the Witness explores Beckett's representation of physical pain in his theatre plays in the long aftermath of World War II, emphasising how the issues raised by this staging of pain speak directly to matters lying at the heart of his work: the affective power of the human body; the doubtful capacity of language as a means of communication; the aesthetic and ethical functioning of the theatre medium; and the vexed question of intersubjective empathy. Alongside the wartime and post-war plays of fellow Francophone writers Albert Camus, Eugène Ionesco, Pablo Picasso, and Marguerite Duras, this study resituates Beckett's early plays in a new conceptualising of le théâtre du témoin or a 'theatre of the witness'. These are plays concerned with the epistemological and ethical uncertainties of witnessing another's pain, rather than with the sufferer's own direct experience. They raise troubling questions about our capacity to comprehend and respond to another being's pain. Drawing on an interdisciplinary framework of extant criticism, recorded historical audience response, theatre and affect theory, and medical understandings of bodily pain, Hannah Simpson argues that these plays do not offer any easily negotiable encounter with physical suffering, pushing us to recognise the very 'otherness' of another being's pain, even as it invades our own affective sphere. In place of any comforting transcendence or redemption of endured pain, they offer a starkly sceptical, even pessimistic probing of what it is to witness another's suffering.
