Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • In this urgent, authoritative book, Bill Gates sets out a wide-ranging, practical—and accessible—plan for how the world can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid a climate catastrophe. Bill Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. With the help of experts in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science, and finance, he has focused on what must be done in order to stop the planet's slide to certain environmental disaster. In this book, he not only explains why we need to work toward net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, but also details what we need to do to achieve this profoundly important goal. He gives us a clear-eyed description of the challenges we face. Drawing on his understanding of innovation and what it takes to get new ideas into the market, he describes the areas in which technology is already helping to reduce emissions, where and how the current technology can be made to function more effectively, where breakthrough technologies are needed, and who is working on these essential innovations. Finally, he lays out a concrete, practical plan for achieving the goal of zero emissions—suggesting not only policies that governments should adopt, but what we as individuals can do to keep our government, our employers, and ourselves accountable in this crucial enterprise. As Bill Gates makes clear, achieving zero emissions will not be simple or easy to do, but if we follow the plan he sets out here, it is a goal firmly within our reach.

Book excerpt: In This Is How We Survive: Revolutionary Mothering, War, and Exile in the 21st Century, Mai’a Williams shares her experiences working in conflict zones and with liberatory resistance communities as a journalist, human rights worker, and midwife in Palestine, Egypt, Chiapas, Berlin, and the U.S., while mothering her young daughter Aza. She first went to Palestine in 2003 during the Second Intifada to support Palestinians resisting the Israeli occupation. In 2006, she became pregnant in Bethlehem, West Bank. By the time her daughter was three years old, they had already celebrated with Zapatista women in southern Mexico and survived Israeli detention, and during the 2011 Arab Spring they were in the streets of Cairo protesting the Mubarak dictatorship. She watched the Egyptian revolution fall apart and escaped the violence, like many of her Arab comrades, by moving to Europe. Three years later, she and Aza were camping at Standing Rock in protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline and co-creating revolutionary mothering communities once again. This is a story about mothers who are doing the work of deep social transformation by creating the networks of care that sustain movements and revolutions. By centering mothers in our organizing work, we center those who have the skills and the experience of creating and sustaining life on this planet. This Is How We Survive illuminates how mothering is a practice essential to the work of revolution. It explores the heartbreak of revolutionary movements falling apart and revolutionaries scattering across the globe into exile. And most importantly, how mamas create, no matter the conditions, the resilience to continue doing revolutionary work.

Book excerpt: Inspired by the legacy of radical and queer black feminists of the 1970s and ’80s, Revolutionary Mothering places marginalized mothers of color at the center of a world of necessary transformation. The challenges we face as movements working for racial, economic, reproductive, gender, and food justice, as well as anti-violence, anti-imperialist, and queer liberation are the same challenges that many mothers face every day. Oppressed mothers create a generous space for life in the face of life-threatening limits, activate a powerful vision of the future while navigating tangible concerns in the present, move beyond individual narratives of choice toward collective solutions, live for more than ourselves, and remain accountable to a future that we cannot always see. Revolutionary Mothering is a movement-shifting anthology committed to birthing new worlds, full of faith and hope for what we can raise up together. Contributors include June Jordan, Malkia A. Cyril, Esteli Juarez, Cynthia Dewi Oka, Fabiola Sandoval, Sumayyah Talibah, Victoria Law, Tara Villalba, Lola Mondragón, Christy NaMee Eriksen, Norma Angelica Marrun, Vivian Chin, Rachel Broadwater, Autumn Brown, Layne Russell, Noemi Martinez, Katie Kaput, alba onofrio, Gabriela Sandoval, Cheryl Boyce Taylor, Ariel Gore, Claire Barrera, Lisa Factora-Borchers, Fabielle Georges, H. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are religions intrinsically violent (as is strenuously argued by the ‘new atheists’)? Or, as Girard argues, have they been functionally rational instruments developed to manage and cope with the intrinsically violent runaway dynamic that characterizes human social organization in all periods of human history? Is violence decreasing in this time of secular modernity post-Christendom (as argued by Steven Pinker and others)? Or are we, rather, at increased and even apocalyptic risk from our enhanced powers of action and our decreased socio-symbolic protections? Rene Girard’s mimetic theory has been slowly but progressively recognized as one of the most striking breakthrough contributions to twentieth-century critical thinking in fundamental anthropology: in particular for its power to model and explain violent sacralities, ancient and modern. The present volume sets this power of explanation in an evolutionary and Darwinian frame. It asks: How far do cultural mechanisms of controlling violence, which allowed humankind to cross the threshold of hominization—i.e., to survive and develop in its evolutionary emergence—still represent today a default setting that threatens to destroy us? Can we transcend them and escape their field of gravity? Should we look to—or should we look beyond—Darwinian survival? What—and where (if anywhere)—is salvation?

Book excerpt: The federally recognized Round Valley Indian Tribes are a small, confederated people whose members today come from twelve indigenous California tribes. In 1849, during the California gold rush, people from several of these tribes were relocated to a reservation farm in northern Mendocino County. Fusing Native American history and labor history, William Bauer Jr. chronicles the evolution of work, community, and tribal identity among the Round Valley Indians in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that enabled their survival and resistance to assimilation. Drawing on oral history interviews, Bauer brings Round Valley Indian voices to the forefront in a narrative that traces their adaptations to shifting social and economic realities, first within unfree labor systems, including outright slavery and debt peonage, and later as wage laborers within the agricultural workforce. Despite the allotment of the reservation, federal land policies, and the Great Depression, Round Valley Indians innovatively used work and economic change to their advantage in order to survive and persist in the twentieth century. We Were All Like Migrant Workers Here relates their history for the first time.

Why, then, do the very words send shivers down the spines of even our most senior representatives? Perhaps it is the unblinking eye of the television cameras, the hawkish interrogation of the committee chair or simply the knowledge of those Goliaths who have fallen before. After twenty years of advising big-name clients on how to take on this gruelling ordeal, Scott Colvin argues that it needn't be this way. Based on interviews with those on the front line, he offers a fresh perspective on how the process could be improved for committee members and witnesses alike. Steeped in exclusive inside knowledge and expert tips, and with a step-by-step manual on how to prepare for a hearing, this is the essential guide to not only surviving but thriving in the hot seat.

Book excerpt: The nathalis plan to wipe out the zethichtalarin was mostly successful, but a large number of zeths managed to escape to other dimensions before their worlds were destroyed. It was assumed that the threat had been eliminated, but assumptions can often be wrong. After what was assumed to be a free army, led by a general with advanced tactical knowledge swept across the continent in the Faranox dimension, it was assumed that they'd done it to free all the slaves, and to wipe out the practice of slavery on the continent once and for all. Rather than releasing all the slaves however, they marched them back with them to the village where the army had formed. Why would a free army not just send the slaves back home, and where had this mysterious general come from that had the knowledge to lead his army to such a sweeping victory? The more the team in Washington thought about it, there was only one conclusion they could possibly reach. The zeths were back, and they were trying to build themselves a new home to use as a base of operations in the Faranox dimension. Assembling a team made up of members of both the Washington and Scotland teams, as well as a newly human Thayelle, and a couple of ach'len who are hell-bent on revenge, the team heads out to the East Coast to begin their search. All the anecdotal evidence they've been able to gather so far has indicated that the mysterious free army originated from there somewhere, but with a lot of land to cover, the team has to disguise themselves as locals so they can gather information without raising any suspicions. Back at home, a frustrated Jan discovers a new ability that will aid them all greatly on their mission. When the team takes that ability and comes up with some even more creative ways to use it, they suddenly find that they're all far more powerful than they'd ever imagined. Resurgence is book 11 of the Unseen Things series.

Ten Reasons to Have a Holiday Fling… That's either the title of a holiday listicle I'll be submitting in the hopes of strumming up extra cash…or it's the mental game I'm playing during après ski. Take a guess. (Hint: You can't get it wrong.) My first impression of the snowboarder balking at the top of the ski run wasn't the greatest. But a couple of drinks in, with his ruffled hair, whiskey eyes and southern twang, Oliver transforms from just another vacationer to sizzling dreamy Texan. This is the year I'm supposed to turn my life around. This is the year I'm supposed to live my life for me. What better way to kickstart my new life than with a holiday fling? Plus, it's my first Christmas without my family. And Oliver's alone at Christmas too. No one should be alone at Christmas, right? That's my logic. Those hot jingly nights keep us warm and toasty through my most unforgettable holiday ever. And then it's goodbye. A sane, healthy, mature parting of ways and the kick off to the Year of Me. But when an impulsive text rekindles the holiday spirit, it's clear the fireworks didn't end at New Year's… Christmas magic abounds in this love story that begins as a carefree holiday fling and transforms in the New Year, through all the seasons, and winds up right up back on Christmas Tree Lane. How to Survive a Holiday Fling is a steamy, standalone holiday romance novel written in dual first-person POV. CLICK 'BUY NOW' TO START YOUR HOLIDAY FLING TODAY! See what reviewers are saying: "Oooh, Isabel Jolie stole my heart with Oliver and Kate! Another absolutely wonderful Holiday Novel and this one gave me a lot of yearning and angst for both main characters...The side characters, especially the Duke family, Sandra, and Noah, are WONDERFUL!! The ranch and the Tetons seem to be their own characters, and really they should be - they're so vast and they take up so much space and love in the book, Ms. Jolie knows how to give them their true meaning in life, the land really can have that kind of impact on people.... Five out of five stars for a book filled to the brim with love, angst, and so much emotion, it left my heart full." -Bex Book Revieux "Hot without being dirty. Ridiculously sweet without being cliche. Trust me, whatever you think you know about romance, Isabel Jolie is at least 10 steps above that, and she surprised me at every turn. Oliver is rugged, in control, and ultra-masculine, but he's also man enough to let Kate make her own decisions and support her while she makes them. And Kate is a delightful mix between fierce and vulnerable, but those vulnerabilities never stop her from fighting for what she wants, and never backing down from anything. How To Survive A Holiday Fling is a must read, written by an author who truly has an instinctual and impressive grasp on both the genre and the human heart!" -International Review of Books Similar to Books Like: Cowboy Kiss Me At Christmas by Genevieve Turner Impossible Love by Kimberly Readnour Snowflake Hollow by Lexi Timms Search Words: Holiday romance, new adult romance, hometown romance, sexy, hot and steamy, happily ever after, sweet love story, romance love, romance billionaire series, billionaire romance, holiday, holiday romance, romance, billionaire, women's fiction, New Years Romance, Christmas Romance, Christmas fiction, vacation romance, long-distance romance, small town romance, sports romance, cowboy romance
