It guides readers through paths of enquiry and reflection to create a learning programme designed to meet students' specific needs. The focus includes student learning and tutors' teaching and how these are effected by institutional arrangements; the interpersonal skills of tutors; and course design and teaching methods.; The text includes enquiry tasks which invite the reader to explore issues introduced in each chapter in the context of their own institution. An annotated reading list at the end of each chapter enables the reader to take their particular interests further.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A project aimed to identify the staff development needs of tutors involved in the OWTLET (Other Ways To Learn--Educational Technology) open learning scheme and to pilot supportive strategies. To ascertain a broad view of inservice tutor training requirements, the first phase of the project was devoted to a literature review, student and tutor questionnaires, visits to established open learning centers, and attendance at open learning workshops. Phase two comprised three strategies: modification of administrative procedures, a series of staff development meetings for tutors on five topics (learning materials; initial interview; maintaining contact; information, advice, and counseling; review and open forum), and preparation of three staff development units. The units, which covered 10 areas of guidance, were offered in open learning form. Appendix A contains the three units: The Concept of Open Learning, The Initial Meeting, and A Continuing Dialogue. Each unit consists of these components: aim and objectives, study guide, questions to guide reading and informative material, and a conclusion. Appendix B is a list of materials for further reading.
