Its purpose is not to present in most comprehensive fashion all the peculiarities of Latin syntax, but by constant repetition to fix in the student's mind some of the simplest constructions of nouns and verbs. All special grammatical notes in the several lessons have been omitted, that the pupil may early form the habit of constant reference to his grammar. Since the book is to be used in connection with Caesar, the constructions emphasized are those recurring most frequently in his text. Imperatives and independent subjunctives have therefore been lightly touched upon. The more difficult varieties of final and consecutive clauses and of relative sentences have been purposely omitted, from the conviction that the child should understand the rule before he considers its exceptions. The finding of phrases illustrative of the principles of syntax introduced in each lesson has been left to the teacher as a valuable class-room exercise. It has been my own practice to have the sections marked "Class Work" written without the aid of the grammar, making each pupil depend for forms and rules entirely upon his own memory. I have also found that a clear tabular statement of the principles studied, with the proper references to the grammar, is of great help in reviewing. Composition is primarily a training in thought - in the acquisition of ideas and their orderly and effective arrangement. It is the child's thought that must be trained. Nature's wisdom lives in his instinctive interests and aptitudes, and these determine the material to be presented. What the child rejects or cannot handle must be put aside; what he sees and does in the daily round of life - that interests him because it is near, familiar, and his own - that is the starting - point. Outside his own world the dominant mental interest of the child is the story, especially the story that deals with animals, with primitive life, and is touched with wonder. This narrative interest will naturally progress through the fairy tale, the fable, the legend, historical incident, and biography. As the child grows, his growing powers of observation, analysis, and reasoning will permit and call for the varied material offered by nature, human and animal industry, persons, industrial processes, qualities of men and things, and the general questions discussed whenever his schoolmates or his elders gather together. This material - most of it - must be given 'the pupil; but he must think it over, and possess it; and the teacher must assure his possession of it by requiring discussion, topical outlines, and reproduction of its content. This material must be interesting - No profit grows where is no pleasure ta'en. It must be presented In small units - in units to ensure that essential of good teaching lesson unity, and in small units to suit the child's capacity. This material must have a sequence, a progressive develop ment of theme. Adding knowledge where something already is known means rational and permanent growth. Other studies, particularly Literature, History, and Nature Study, will afford good material as well; for Composition is not merely a branch of English, it is a function of mind. Initiative and Personality. More than any other school subject Composition calls for the child's own power of doing, his own mental initiative. The process of composition should be interest in the material, made intelligent by discussion, turning to expression. Thought that interests the child has dynamic power to stimulate his own mental activity. When he rewrites a story that he likes he will reproduce his own View of it, and bring his imagination into play. And imagination should be exercised in the school - room as one of the most precious mental gifts. Whatever talent the child has for drawing will respond to the call made upon him to illustrate the story. The play instinct, the instinct of make-believe a vast source of delight and mental growth in children can be turned to account, at every stage of the study. There seems to have been no book which includes those things in all the departments that are of practical value to the ordinary teacher. This book is planned to meet this need. Effort has been made to cover all the essential elements that the good teacher of reading should know, and to omit all that is not essential. It has been attempted to put under one cover at least the minimum of what the teacher of reading should know. To begin with the first of these problems, there are two methods of teaching the art of reading: viz., the synthetic, which proceeds from letters or sounds to words, sentences, etc.; and the analytic, which begins with pictures, words, or sentences, and descends to visual or vocal elements. So long and so far as letters were named from real or fancied resemblances between the form of the letters and objects, the process of naming them no doubt facilitated learning, much as to call our large A a harrow, B an ox-yoke, etc., would now do. This latter, or even if a novice in Hebrew were to remember that mem is water, aleph an ox, nun a fish, etc., would be especially helpful in writing, which in modem methods often comes as a very early stage of language-teaching, and where a distinct name is helpful for each sign. Just when or by whom the school device of telling off the independent names of letters as a key to the spoken word (or spelling) was hit upon, is unknown. Of course, d-o-g really "spells" deogee, and not dog, any more than delta, omicron, gamma, does. Arbitrary in itself, spelling has naturally associated itself with harsh methods of teaching. The first edition was printed in October, 1915. So great a demand for the book followed that a second and a third edition were exhausted within a little over a year from the date of the first appearance. The publication of the work in regular book form is in response to a persistent demand for the Course from superintendents and teachers who have urged that it be made permanently available for their use. Several new chapters have been added to Part One in the present edition. These, for the most part, are taken from the author's "Suggestions for the Improvement of Written Composition," published privately in January, 1917. Careful revision of other parts of the work has been made, wherever the results of the thorough trial of the plan in Lawrence have seemed to justify it. In the work of the primary grades considerable new material of practical value to teachers has been inserted. The number of illustrative compositions has been considerably increased. The grade "standards" are made to conform to the results of the author's continued first-hand study of children's capacity for growth in oral and written expression under this scheme of composition work. These changes mark no departure from the original aim and method of the plan. They merely serve to make both clearer to the teacher.
