Book excerpt: Powerful software exists to help consumer electronics enterprises manage complex product lifecycles and improve the speed with which they introduce new products to the market. While significant research exists to inform the organizational design for a high-performing new product introduction process, less has been done to inform strategies for selecting and implementing enterprise software that can play a key role in the market success or failure of a new product. Studies and surveys suggest that only 10% of large enterprise software initiatives are completed on-time, within budget, and in scope. While many project management methodologies offer treatments to increase the probability of implementation success for a single software initiative, few methods exist to help inform the selection and sequence for a portfolio of initiatives. This paper proposes a method to reduce the implementation risk of large software projects within a product development organization by completing smaller projects that require the technology team to build their understanding of a complex phase-gate product development model. This method was utilized by Verizon Communications to on-board enterprise software to address time-to-market delays in the first consumer electronics produced in their new product development model.

Book excerpt: Enterprise software is essential to business operations, but buying that software is a minefield of immature selection processes, conflicting interests, and predatory vendors. More than 90 percent of purchases fail to meet all expectations, and close to 30 percent are outright disasters. This failure is astounding when you realize the total cost of ownership over the software's operational life is a significant fraction of annual revenue. A major software purchase is an opportunity to "kick it up a notch" but, despite the best of intentions, very few of these purchases deliver as expected. Through a lack of knowledge, far too many organizations squander the opportunity brought by a major software purchase and remain mired in mediocracy. It doesn't have to be that way! By following the principles described in this book, you will be taking the steps necessary to make your next major software purchase an outstanding success and elevate your organization to a higher level of performance. In the book, I examine what goes wrong with most software selections, why it happens, and provide actionable advice on how to solve the problem. You will discover how to: Select software that fits your needs like a "glove fits your hand," and fully meets expectations. Reduce implementation risks, so the new software goes live on time, within budget and with minimal business disruption. What more could you ask from your next major software purchase?

Book excerpt: Essential reading for success in your next software selection and implementation. Software selection is the most important task in a software implementation project, as it is your best (if not only) opportunity to make sure that the right software-the software that matches the business requirements-is being implemented. Choosing the software that is the best fit clears the way for a successful implementation, yet software selection is often fraught with issues and many companies do not end up with the best software for their needs. However, the process can be greatly simplified by addressing the information sources that influence software selection. This book is a how-to guide for improving the software selection process, and is formulated around the idea that-much like purchasing decisions for consumer products-the end user and those with the domain expertise must be included. In addition to providing hints for refining the software selection process, this book delves into the often-overlooked topic of how consulting and IT analyst firms influence the purchasing decision, and gives the reader an insider's understanding of the enterprise software market. By reading this book you will: Learn how to apply a scientific approach to the software selection process. Interpret vendor-supplied information to your best advantage. Understand what motivates a software vendor. Learn how the institutional structure and biases of consulting firms affect the advice they give you, and understand how to properly interpret information from consulting companies. Make vendor demos work to your benefit. Know the right questions to ask on topics such as integration with existing software, cloud versus on-premise vendors, and client references. Differentiate what is important to know about software for improved "implement-ability" versus what the vendor thinks is important for improved "sell-ability." Better manage your software selection projects to ensure smoother implementations.

Book excerpt: A practical approach to reducing risk on enterprise software projects. Text in the wave in the center of the cover: Software implementation is risky business and success is not a certainty. But you can reduce risk with the strategies in this book. Undertaking software selection and implementation without approximating the project's risk is a poor way to make decisions about either projects or software. But that's the way many companies do business, even though 50 percent of IT implementations are deemed failures. In this book you will review the strategies commonly used by most companies for mitigating software project risk-and learn why these strategies don't work-and then acquire practical and realistic strategies that will help you to maximize success on your software implementation. By reading this book you will: Review the basics of enterprise software risk and how "success" is defined. Delve into the world of big consulting firms, IT analysts, and major "brand" software companies, and learn why they don't always have your best interests at heart. Interpret information provided by consultants, vendors, and IT analyst firms such as Gartner-to your advantage. Appreciate the difference between "sell-ability" and "implement-ability" of enterprise software, and why the distinction is important. Evaluate your company's implementation preparedness. Learn about the Software Decisions Risk Component Model for evaluating risk.

Book excerpt: (cont.) The data about customer adoption of web-based enterprise software is not very clear. Most studies suggest that SaaS accounted for about 5% of the CRM market in 2006, with other application types below that level. In total, SaaS probably doesn't even account for 1% of the global software market. However, customer willingness to adopt SaaS is apparently rising very quickly, and specialized SaaS companies are experiencing rapid growth. From the data available, it can't be decided unambiguously if web-based enterprise software is a truly disruptive model or merely an incremental innovation. Most characteristics point to a new-market disruption, i.e. an innovation that will bring new functionality to current non-users of advanced enterprise software.

Book excerpt: If you want your startup to succeed, you need to understand why startups fail. “Whether you’re a first-time founder or looking to bring innovation into a corporate environment, Why Startups Fail is essential reading.”—Eric Ries, founder and CEO, LTSE, and New York Times bestselling author of The Lean Startup and The Startup Way Why do startups fail? That question caught Harvard Business School professor Tom Eisenmann by surprise when he realized he couldn’t answer it. So he launched a multiyear research project to find out. In Why Startups Fail, Eisenmann reveals his findings: six distinct patterns that account for the vast majority of startup failures. • Bad Bedfellows. Startup success is thought to rest largely on the founder’s talents and instincts. But the wrong team, investors, or partners can sink a venture just as quickly. • False Starts. In following the oft-cited advice to “fail fast” and to “launch before you’re ready,” founders risk wasting time and capital on the wrong solutions. • False Promises. Success with early adopters can be misleading and give founders unwarranted confidence to expand. • Speed Traps. Despite the pressure to “get big fast,” hypergrowth can spell disaster for even the most promising ventures. • Help Wanted. Rapidly scaling startups need lots of capital and talent, but they can make mistakes that leave them suddenly in short supply of both. • Cascading Miracles. Silicon Valley exhorts entrepreneurs to dream big. But the bigger the vision, the more things that can go wrong. Drawing on fascinating stories of ventures that failed to fulfill their early promise—from a home-furnishings retailer to a concierge dog-walking service, from a dating app to the inventor of a sophisticated social robot, from a fashion brand to a startup deploying a vast network of charging stations for electric vehicles—Eisenmann offers frameworks for detecting when a venture is vulnerable to these patterns, along with a wealth of strategies and tactics for avoiding them. A must-read for founders at any stage of their entrepreneurial journey, Why Startups Fail is not merely a guide to preventing failure but also a roadmap charting the path to startup success.
