Economy of time is secured by the arrangement in lessons, with due regard for the amount of time at the teacher's disposal, and the ability of the average pupil. Definiteness is obtained by the side notes, which help the pupil to get the thought, and by the summaries and questions at the end of each lesson which call the pupil's attention to what is essential in the lesson learned. (b) Substitute teachers taking the place of absent teachers may continue the teaching of history from the point where the regular teacher left off. They may make definite progress and hand the class back to the teacher up to grade in this subject. (c) Maps and illustrations have been inserted profusely, for history cannot be studied properly without a clear knowledge of the place setting of events. Pupils will be glad to help in this, and it is a good way to stimulate their interest in the subject.
