Book excerpt: From author's own experience and observing other couples, he noticed one big source of conflict with couples who decide to hitch together, presumably for life. Many relationships fall apart. The author noticed that a key reason for this conflict, is that a lot of these couples are incompatible to begin with. When such mates decide to commit themselves to a joint life, it is like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. The author studied the problem and decided to help future couples select compatible mates, before they make a lifetime commitment. The selected mate would be "Next of Kin", as the book title states. The subtitle would then be "How to Pick a Compatible Mate."

Book excerpt: Two veteran psychiatrists unravel the mystery of how thought and emotional patterns are passed from parents to children, generation after generation, "conditioning" each of us in ways that endure throughout our lives and affect all of our relationships. Living on Automatic not only introduces the concept of emotional conditioning, including how it occurs and becomes entrenched in our minds, but also explains how individuals can "decondition" themselves to become more adept at choosing and negotiating more rewarding relationships. Authored by two psychiatrists, the text draws from more than 80 years of their combined psychotherapy work with thousands of people. The authors focus on helping readers to understand their roles in relationships and to develop more rewarding relationships. Case studies and questions are provided to illustrate emotional conditioning and the personality roles that emerge from it. Readers will learn why people choose the mates that they do; why the ways we learn to relate as children often do not change later in life; and how to observe and engage in introspection to begin to decondition themselves from auto-pilot, knee-jerk emotional responses, allowing for the formation of better relationships with their spouse or partner, children, and other family members.

Book excerpt: Several years ago, two of my colleagues and I had the opportunity to interview Fritz Heider-perhaps the most influential theorist in the field of social psychology (Harvey, Ickes, & Kidd, 1976). During our interview, Heider affirmed a belief that had guided his career since the 1920s, the belief that the study of human relationships is the most important task in which social scientists can engage. Although many social scientists would profess to share this belief, it is nonetheless true that the study of human relationships has been one of the most neglected tasks in the history of the social sciences-including psychology. What Heider found in the 1920s-that most psychologists acknowledged the importance of studying human relationships but at the same time tended to focus their own research on more "tractable" topics such as memory and cognition-is still very much evident in the 1980s. Even within the more specific domain of social psychology, a majority of researchers still choose to address those hybrid topics ("social cognition," "social categorization and stereotyping," "person memory," etc. ) that relate most directly to traditional areas of psychological research. Still other researchers, while choosing to study such important interpersonal phenomena as altruism, aggression, conflict, and interpersonal attraction, tend to focus so exclusively on these isolated and abstracted phenomena that they fail to provide a more inclusive view of the relationships in which these phenomena occur.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1994, David Hernandez, a small-time drug-dealer in Spanish Harlem, got out of the drug business and turned his life over to God. After he joined Victory Chapel-a vibrant Bronx-based Pentecostal church-he saw his life change in many ways: today he is a member of the NYPD, married, the father of three, and still an active member of his church. David Hernandez is just one of the many individuals whose stories inform Soul Mates, which draws on both national surveys and in-depth interviews to paint a detailed portrait of the largely positive influence exercised by churches on relationships and marriage among African Americans and Latinos-and whites as well. Soul Mates shines a much-needed spotlight on the lives of strong and happy minority couples. Wilcox and Wolfinger find that both married and unmarried minority couples who attend church together are significantly more likely to enjoy happy relationships than black and Latino couples who do not regularly attend. They argue that churches serving these communities promote a code of decency encompassing hard work, temperance, and personal responsibility that benefits black and Latino families. Wilcox and Wolfinger provide a compelling look at faith and family life among blacks and Latinos. The book offers a wealth of critical insight into the effect of religion on minority relationships, as well as the unique economic and cultural challenges facing African American and Latino families in twenty-first-century America.

Book excerpt: Evaluating the people you date against The Checklist will help you avoid investing time, energy and emotion in a relationship that will ultimately end in misery. Most of us have engaged in a relationship that we wished we had managed to avoid. If we had only had a crystal ball that could show us what path to take we would've walked away from the relationship long before we got hurt. The Checklist is the next best thing to a crystal ball. It provides 7 criterion that you can use to determine the viability of a life-long relationship. To the degree that the person you are dating doesn't meet one or more criterion on The Checklist you have handicapped yourself and accepted a relationship that has a high chance of failure. On the other hand, if you find someone who meets all 7 criterion on The Checklist the author guarantees a lifetime of happiness with that individual - if you can manage to marry them. The 7 criterion were developed by the author over a four year period after his ex-wife left him with several children to raise on his own. For those that are familiar with US singer/song writer Kenny Rogers' famous line "You picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille", this was just such a moment . The pain of divorce was magnified by the difficulty of being a single parent several times over. But out of the crucible of the author's experiences came The Checklist, a gift for anyone who truly wants to find Mister or Miss Right. Nigel Hughes uses stories from his life that flesh out the origin and rationale of each criterion. You will find yourself deeply touched by the stories and completely convinced by his compelling logic. This is an easy must read for anyone wanting a permanent relationship. And it's the essential field guide for that friend, son, daughter, parent or sibling that is looking for someone with whom to share the rest of their life.

Book excerpt: Genetic studies aimed at understanding the origin of species are dominating major scientific journals. In the past decade, genetic tools that were previously available only in model systems have become accessible to investigators working on nearly all species. Concurrent with these technical advances has been an increase in understanding of both the importance of considering the ecological context of speciation and testing hypotheses about causes for species formation. Many recent studies suggest a prominent role of sexual selection in species formation. These advances have produced a need for a synthesis of what we now understand about speciation, and perhaps more importantly, where we should go from here. In this volume, several leading investigators and rising stars have contributed reviews and/or novel primary research findings aimed at understanding the ultimate mystery on which Darwin named his most famous and influential book. Fundamental to the origin of species is the evolution of mate choice systems. This collection of papers discusses burgeoning genetic, evolutionary, and ecological approaches to understanding the origins of mating discrimination and causes of premating reproductive isolation both within and between species. The individual contributions span a wide spectrum of disciplines, taxa, and ideas (some controversial). This synthesis brings together several of the most recent ideas with supporting empirical data. This book will be of particular interest to both undergraduate and postgraduate researchers and students and researchers in the field of evolutionary biology, genetics and animal behaviour.

Book excerpt: As FAR AS we know this is the first time anyone has written a book attempting to put mate selection on a sensible basis, despite the fact that sooner or later almost everybody selects one. A good many people resent the idea of an outsider telling them how they should pick a mate. They think it smacks of meddling. Marriage is something sacred and personal. It should not be done according to rules. We heartily sympathize. Unfortunately, however, marriages are not made in Heaven. Usually people marry by hunch or impulse ... or because their parents think it is a good match ... or because they get themselves so deeply involved romantically that marrying seems the only proper thing to do. Too frequently such methods merely mess up a couple of people's lives. More than a third of all the millions of marriages undertaken in the last ten years are in trouble. Many are already dissolved. Many more soon will be. A great deal of research and counseling has now been done in the field of marriage, and the findings validated. At Penn State, for example, hundreds of couples who were tested before marriage at the Marriage Counseling Service are checked periodically after mar- riage to find how they are making out. Of all the marriages which the service predicted would be successful, not one has yet ended in divorce or separation. Most of the people who went ahead despite the clinic's cautions are already in serious trouble or have been divorced. As a result of many such investigations, reliable information is 11 Foreword available on the kinds of people who make the best mates, and on the causes of marriage success and failure. In this book we have tried to include those findings which should be most helpful and interesting to all people involved in love or marriage but particularly to people who sooner or later will be taking unto themselves a mate. It is not our intention to lay down a set of rules for people to follow. But we hope that after reading this book you will be more enlightened in your hunches than you might be otherwise, and be a much happier and more desirable mate yourself!

Cane has analyzed the birth order of 6,000 celebrities, historical figures, and modern couples. Book excerpt: We don’t have all the answers—but we can help you choose a partner. Choosing a romantic partner is one of contemporary life’s biggest adventures. But other aspects of modern living—being globally more mobile, a fall in religious belief, social liberalization, and more job opportunities (but longer working hours)—mean relationships have rarely been so challenging, and so important. In How to Choose a Partner, Susan Quilliam guides us through the process of finding the right partner for us as individuals. The real challenge is that we grow. Drawing upon rich cultural material, psychology, and her background in relationship therapy, Susan presents partner choice as a journey toward self-development, driving us to learn more about ourselves, about other people, and about life and the way we want to live.
