Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pruning Fruit-Trees Second-year Priming - During the first summer, providing the tree has made good growth, many side branches will have been produced. From these branches we must begin -to select our permanent mainbranches. If thetrec has made sufficient growth, from three to five well-placed branches should be saved and the remainder cut out. In selecting these, cut out all bad crotches first and select from those that come away from the main stem at a good wide angle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Pruning Forest and Ornamental Trees The Trustees of the Massachusetts Society for the Promotion of Agriculture have intrusted me with the preparation of an American edition of the Count des Cars' treatise on Pruning Forest Trees. No comprehensive work on this subject has appeared before in the English language. This, perhaps, is not remarkable. In Great Britain the earlier plantations, largely inspired by the works of Evelyn, were made with the view of ornamenting private parks, and the question of increasing the individual capacity of trees to produce timber by any system of pruning was hardly considered. The economic plantations of later years, made in Scotland and afterwards in England, have been generally composed of coniferous species, which, when properly planted, largely prune themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete Work on the Pruning of Fruit Trees In offering this work on pruning to the growers of Western Australia I am giving them the benefit of my own practical experience extending over 20 years, and the principles laid down have been gained by close observation of the differ ent varieties. That the system adopted has proved most successful in making trees bear heavy crops of fruit can be substantiated by those who have known me both in New South Wales and Victoria. During the past ten years I have not only carefully watched the results and improved on them, but have taken photos. Showing the trees at different stages, and my plates now number some hundreds. Having gained my experience in different districts and parts of both New South Wales and Victoria it has taught me how necessary it is for the orchardist to always study local conditions, and in many ways I have had to change my system or modify it on moving into a new district where the climatic and soil conditions were totally different. Contradictory as it may at first thought appear, pruning is frequently resorted to to accelerate or augment growth in plants. Weak growing nursery stock is frequently severely cut back during the resting period in order that all the strength of the root may be forced into the formation of a single upright stalk which will make the plant a salable nursery tree. Rejuvenation of old trees - Severe pruning is also resorted to with older plants for the purpose of rejuvenating them. Old apple trees and old shade trees are frequently so treated, in 'order to induce them to throw out strong new shoots. A knowledge of the science and experience in the art of pruning are almost essential to a satisfactory attainment of the desired objects. Conditions and personal opinions are at such variance that this bulletin will concern itself chiefly with principles that underlie pruning practises. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Nature of Trees, and the Pruning of Timber Trees: Showing the Impossibility of Increasing the Quantity, or Improving the Quality of Timber by Pruning The following remarks on the property of trees to adopt the best shape for the situation they occupy, do not relate to the Pine or Fir tribe, the trees of which have a peculiar form from which they cannot depart. The Lombardy Poplar, too, appears to be similar in this respect. I hope to show the fallacy of pruning with an intention of increasing the growth and bulk of trees, or improving the form, or the quality of the timber. Cutting away dead boughs from trees, or cutting away any jagged part broken by accident, will not be considered as pruning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pruning of Winter-Injured Peach Trees Unusual and prolonged periods of low temperature in southern Illinois during the winter of 1917 - 18 resulted in serious injury to peach trees. The month of December, 1917, was the most severe month in the climatological history of the state. In many peach growing localities of southern Illinois the temperature reached as low as -20 and -25 Fahrenheit. During the periods of low temperature strong winds prevailed. Fortunately, however, there was a good cov ering of snow in most peach orchards, and therefore the injury was confined to the trunks and the branches of the trees. Peach growers were at a loss to know how their trees should be treated, especially with reference to pruning. Some were pruning their trees severely, while others were pruning moderately. The writer recommended moderate pruning for both Old and young peach trees, as experimental evidence had indicated that for winter-injured peach trees more than one year old moderate pruning was better than severe pruning.1 In the case of J une - budded or small yearling trees planted during the fall of 1917 however, it was recommended that the usual cutting back to whips be practiced. We seldom consider how wonderful, and even when we allow ourselves to ponder on this great subject, or study it carefully and intelligently, we are wholly unable to grasp the wonders and marvels and magnitude of it. The subject is unquestionably so much greater and so far beyond our comprehension that we are only faintly able to realize its meaning and feel that we are only a part of it, an important part to be sure, but still only a manifestation of it. And yet, in us, life is so highly developed that we may intelligently think and consider and study the great laws of life, that same life which renders us the very privilege of living and experiencing and thinking. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Effects of Pruning Certain Coniferous Trees and Shrubs My attention was recently directed to a note of a correspondent in an English periodical inquiring if the method of pruning conifers adopted by me is a good one, and requesting to know if I prune Wellingtonias, Deodars, Thujas, also Picea and Abies. The editor remarks that I do prune some trees to induce an upward growth. For the benefit of those wishing information on this subject, I have much pleasure in giving, through the medium of the Botanical Society, some detailed observations on the results of my long experience in pruning Conifers. The circumstance which first led me to turn my thoughts more directly to this subject, was the rude state in which the Deodar was formerly seen in many nursery establishments throughout the country, and the great difficulty experienced in finding a couple of wellshaped plants to match. Of recent years this difficulty has become less, branch pruning or fore-shortening being now generally adopted in all well-regulated nurseries. Deodar Pruning - Beneficial Effects. There are few species of Coniferous plants on which I would recommend the knife to be used. The Deodar is the one on which I most frequently operate. Other species, however, have been subjected to knife pruning and are hereafter noticed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
