Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Make Pictures: Easy Lessons for the Amateur Photographer In the space of eight weeks a second edition of this book has been demanded. This must be due to the awakening of a great popular desire for amateur photography. The devotees are to be found among scientists, microscopists, bankers, merchants, the ladies, the youth, yachtsmen, canoeists; in fact it would be hard to say where they are not, and it is because of a love of the art, the increase of adherents, and the great success which has attended their efforts, that the author finds cause for congratulation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Photography Made Easy For more than twenty years it has been my daily task to reply to enquiries made by amateur photographers, the majority of them beginners, each morning's post bring ing from half a dozen upwards. No one could do this for long without knowing fairly accurately what it is which the novice wishes to know, or ought to know; and, in writing this book, the questions put to me have been constantly in mind. If the directions given in some cases seem needlessly explicit, I ask any reader who is impatient, to believe that there are other would-be photographers who have found less explicit instructions puzzling to them. Mere verbiage I hate as much as anyone but experience shows that brevity is often bought at the expense of clearness. And that it is very difficult to write even so little as a single sentence of practical instruction in photography which anyone with no previous knowledge whatever of the subject is able to under stand fully. Most of the book is limited strictly to practical photo graphy; but the two chapters on how a lens works have been included because, although they do not come strictly under that heading, they may indirectly help the user of a lens to understand its principles, and to apply that know ledge in his work. So many seem to think the working of a lens a very difficult thing to grasp, and ask questions which a careful reading of those two chapters should make quite unnecessary. Those who do not feel tempted to go into the subject can pass them over and keep to the strictly practical side of the subject. It only remains to add that, while the book has been founded upon the Lessons for Beginners, which have been a weekly feature in The Amateur Photographer and Photo graphy for the last ten years, it is not an exact reprint of any of them, but has been gathered from many, and revised and modified to give it its present form. Learn to ask better, more helpful questions of your work so that you can create stronger and more powerful photographs.

Photographers often look at an image—one they’ve either already created or are in the process of making—and ask themselves a simple question: “Is this a good photograph?” It’s an understandable question, but it’s really not very helpful. How are you supposed to answer that? What does “good” even mean? Is it the same for everyone?

What if you were equipped to ask better, more constructive questions of your work so that you could think more intentionally and creatively, and in doing so, bring more specific action and vision to the act of creating photographs? What if asking stronger questions allowed you to establish a more effective approach to your image-making? In The Heart of the Photograph: 100 Questions for Making Stronger, More Expressive Photographs, photographer and author David duChemin helps you learn to ask better questions of your work in order to craft more successful photographs—photographs that express and connect, photographs that are strong and, above all, photographs that are truly yours.

From the big-picture questions—What do I want this image to accomplish?—to the more detail-oriented questions that help you get there—What is the light doing? Where do the lines lead? What can I do about it?—David walks you through his thought process so that you can establish your own. Along the way, he discusses the building blocks from which compelling photographs are made, such as gesture, balance, scale, contrast, perspective, story, memory, symbolism, and much more. The Heart of the Photograph is not a theoretical book. It is a practical and useful book that equips you to think more intentionally as a photographer and empowers you to ask more helpful questions of you and your work, so that you can produce images that are not only better than “good,” but as powerful and authentic as you hope them to be.

We can only add that in it all photographic processes have been reduced to the simplest form consistent with good results - complex theories or untried experiments have not been introduced. We have given prominence to the Kodak system of picture making because time has demonstrated its supremacy for the producing of good results in the simplest way. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE FIRST BOOK WITH ONE FOOT ON THE COFFEE TABLE, AND ONE FOOT IN THE CLASSROOM Joe McNally, one of the world’s top pro digital photographers, whose celebrated work has graced the pages of Sports Illustrated, Time, and National Geographic (to name a few), breaks new ground by doing something no photography book has ever done—blending the rich, stunning images and elegant layout of a coffee-table book with the invaluable training, no-nonsense insights, and photography secrets usually found only in those rare, best-of-breed educational books. When Joe’s not on assignment for the biggest-name magazines and Fortune 500 clients, he’s in the classroom teaching location lighting, environmental portraiture, and how to “get the shot” at workshops around the world. These on-location workshops are usually reserved for a handful of photographers each year, but now you can learn the same techniques that Joe shares in his seminars and lectures in a book that brings Joe’s sessions to life. What makes the book so unique is the “triangle of learning” where (1) Joe distills the concept down to one brief sentence. It usually starts with something like, “An editor at National Geographic once told me...” and then he shares one of those hard-earned tricks of the trade that you only get from spending a lifetime behind the lens. Then, (2) on the facing page is one of Joe’s brilliant images that perfectly illustrates the technique (you’ll recognize many of his photos from magazine covers). And (3) you get the inside story of how that shot was taken, including which equipment he used (lens, f/stop, lighting, accessories, etc.), along with the challenges that type of project brings, and how to set up a shot like that of your own. This book also gives you something more. It inspires. It challenges. It informs. But perhaps most importantly, it will help you understand photography and the art of making great photos at a level you never thought possible. This book is packed with those “Ah ha!” moments—those clever insights that make it all come together for you. It brings you that wonderful moment when it suddenly all makes sense—that “moment it clicks.”
