Book excerpt: The wellness industry is taking over almost every aspect of our lives, from the products we put on our body and face to the mantras we may say into the mirror each day. When that happens, though, what do you do? For speaker and mental health advocate the author, it meant doing nothing and avoiding therapy like the plague. What she did not know, though, is that there were alternatives to talk therapy. You could spend time with horses, go on a walk through the woods, or dance your way through healing. If you are moving through your trauma healing journey and are looking for an alternative to talk therapy, then you have landed in the right place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “well-organized, valuable” guide draws from somatic-based psychotherapy and neuroscience to offer “clear guidance” for coping with childhood trauma (Peter Levine, author of Waking the Tiger and In an Unspoken Voice). Although it may seem that people suffer from an endless number of emotional problems and challenges, Laurence Heller and Aline LaPierre maintain that most of these can be traced to five biologically based organizing principles: the need for connection, attunement, trust, autonomy, and love-sexuality. They describe how early trauma impairs the capacity for connection to self and others and how the ensuing diminished aliveness is the hidden dimension that underlies most psychological and many physiological problems. Heller and LaPierre introduce the NeuroAffective Relational Model® (NARM), a method that integrates bottom-up and top-down approaches to regulate the nervous system and resolve distortions of identity such as low self-esteem, shame, and chronic self-judgment that are the outcome of developmental and relational trauma. While not ignoring a person’s past, NARM emphasizes working in the present moment to focus on clients’ strengths, resources, and resiliency in order to integrate the experience of connection that sustains our physiology, psychology, and capacity for relationship.

Book excerpt: Introducing a radical healing approach for the adult symptoms of Childhood PTSD—from the creator of the Crappy Childhood Fairy program and YouTube channel. Conventional trauma treatments (talk therapy and medication) simply don't work for many trauma survivors, and now we know why. Researchers have identified the core symptom that drives most other symptoms—neurological dysregulation. It's an injury to your nervous system triggered by abuse and neglect in childhood, and it can profoundly impact your physical health, damage your ability to learn and focus, and hold you back from forming caring relationships. The good news is that healing is possible, and in Re-Regulated, author Anna Runkle (aka the Crappy Childhood Fairy) shows you how. Chapter by chapter, she teaches you practical steps to identify signs of dysregulation, quickly re-regulate, and then stay regulated more of the time. Drawing from her own experience healing Childhood PTSD symptoms, and her decades of work coaching and mentoring thousands of others working to heal from abuse and neglect in the past, Anna helps you calm triggers, break out of isolation, and change the self-defeating behaviors that are so common for traumatized people. From a regulated state, things can move forward rapidly in every area of your life so you can become your full and real self at last. You'll learn: · Practical techniques to release trauma-driven thinking and strengthen focus · Principles to overcome trauma-driven thinking and behaviors that hold you back · Strategies to manage overwhelming emotions before they hurt relationships · A process to build your capacity to connect with other people · A "Daily Practice" to help you start each day regulated and energized Anna's tools can be used on your own or as a complement to professional therapy. With her help, you can achieve calmness and clarity you never imagined possible.

Trauma recovery is tricky; however, there are several key principles that can help make the process safe and effective. This book gives self help readers, therapy clients, and therapists alike the skills to understand and implement eight keys to successful trauma healing: mindful identification of what is helpful, recognizing survival, having the option to not remember, creating a supportive inner dialogue, forgiving not being able to stop the trauma, understanding and sharing shame, finding your own recovery pace; mobilizing your body, and helping others. This is not another book promoting a new method or type of treatment; rather, it is a necessary adjunct to self-help and professional recovery programs. After reading this book, readers will be able to recognize their own individual needs and evaluate whether those needs are being met. They will have the tools necessary to put themselves in the drivers seat, navigating their own safe road to recovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Survivors of trauma—whether abuse, accidents, or war—can end up profoundly wounded, betrayed by their bodies that failed to get them to safety and that are a source of pain. In order to fully heal from trauma, a connection must be made with oneself, including one’s body. The trauma-sensitive yoga described in this book moves beyond traditional talk therapies that focus on the mind, by bringing the body actively into the healing process. This allows trauma survivors to cultivate a more positive relationship to their body through gentle breath, mindfulness, and movement practices. Overcoming Trauma through Yoga is a book for survivors, clinicians, and yoga instructors who are interested in mind/body healing. It introduces trauma-sensitive yoga, a modified approach to yoga developed in collaboration between yoga teachers and clinicians at the Trauma Center at Justice Resource Institute, led by yoga teacher David Emerson, along with medical doctor Bessel van der Kolk. The book begins with an in-depth description of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), including a description of how trauma is held in the body and the need for body-based treatment. It offers a brief history of yoga, describes various styles of yoga commonly found in Western practice, and identifies four key themes of trauma-sensitive yoga. Chair-based exercises are described that can be incorporated into individual or group therapy, targeting specific treatment goals, and modifications are offered for mat-based yoga classes. Each exercise includes trauma-sensitive language to introduce the practice, as well as photographs to illustrate the poses. The practices have been offered to a wide range of individuals and groups, including men and women, teens, returning veterans, and others. Rounded out by valuable quotes and case stories, the book presents mindfulness, breathing, and yoga exercises that can be used by home practitioners, yoga teachers, and therapists as a way to cultivate awareness, tolerance, and an increased acceptance of the self.

Book excerpt: In this revolutionary approach to living well, a pioneering trauma-release therapist puts relief in reach--with a multi-modal practice that can be done at home. Activating the body's natural healing processes has been proven to lift the oppressive effects of trauma--PTSD, chronic tension, pain, irritability, difficulty in relationships, and a lackluster daily experience. In this volume, practitioner and worldwide trainer Giten Tonkov expands on successful body-based, trauma-release therapies to teach average people how to break the trauma cycle, improve relationships, and achieve healthier, more fulfilling day-to-day lives. His holistic approach integrates deep, connected breathing with movement, conscious touch, emotional expression, sound, and meditation to allow the body to intuitively heal itself. Periodically releasing trauma creates a "clean slate"; it also helps people to learn better how to deal with trauma when it occurs. Giten has taught thousands of people on five continents to shift how they function--at a foundational, physical level--through his thoughtful approach and clear exercises. This is the first time he has crafted this information for the sole practitioner. Please note: Amazon has 14 "stores" around the world, and the ordering process works best if you order from a store close to your country. Book excerpt: If you're looking to solve your own health problems, help someone you love, or you're searching for answers to assist customers or clients, this practical guide to natural remedies will help you succeed. This book is the result of the healing journey I started fifty years ago when I failed to find answers to my own chronic respiratory problems. After years of getting worse with allopathic treatments, I discovered a different approach. I started studying and applying the use of herbs, diet, and other natural modalities. I went from being a sickly teenager, to a healthy young adult. For the past forty years I have been consulting, writing, and teaching, sharing what I have learned to help other people experience the same health transformation. I wrote Strategies for Health to share this knowledge so that anyone who is struggling with poor health can move beyond symptomatic relief and start learning how to achieve lasting health. To get better results this book teaches you to find and adopt strategies to correct the underlying root causes of disease, such as nutritional deficiencies, exposure to toxins, unresolved stress, and poor lifestyle habits. Because when you look beyond treating disease symptoms and correct these root causes the body returns to its natural state--health. This is the approach that I have taken to successfully care for myself and my family. It has also helped me transform the lives of my clients and teach hundreds of successful natural health consultants to do the same. And I hope the information in this book will help bring the same health and wellbeing to you and many others. -Steven Horne, RH(AHG), DHS, DHM

Book excerpt: In this very simplified and practical guidebook, I outline the products and techniques that have helped me navigate the overwhelming symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). However, there are many and varied experiences that lead to the onset of PTSD: war time incidences; emotional and/or physical abuse; terrorist or other life threatening attacks - basically any traumatic physical and/or psychological event. When these symptoms arise, it is time to heal. The healing of any type of traumatic event is basically the same except for one important distinction that exists between trauma that is the result of abusive acts (Abuse Trauma) and that which arises naturally from the tragedies and endings that are part of life (Life Trauma). Abuse Trauma results in victimization - one person overpowering another. "Power" refers to a person's energy, spirit or life force. This necessitates that the victim 'take back his/her power' in order for healing to occur. In Life Trauma - for example, the death of a loved one - this is not an issue. As painful as Life Trauma may be, it is not abusive - the person hurting is not a victim even though s/he may feel the same pain as a victim. I have dedicated a section in Part 1 (see paragraph below) of this book specifically for those who have endured Abuse Trauma entitled "Reclaiming Your Power." This guide is set out in two parts: Part 1 contains an index of the products and techniques which I found most beneficial; Part 2 delves into the specific symptoms of PTSD explaining the reasons for them as well as listing the relevant remedial tools as set out in Part 1. When using this manual it is important to remember that only you can decide what is right for you. At times this will not be apparent until you have tried something that does not work. Trust your emotions, intuition and body as you embark on this profound healing journey.

Heal the Body, Heal the Mind takes trauma survivors on a supportive and healing journey toward well-being. By practicing the somatic exercises and mind-body interventions in this compassionate guide, you’ll learn to move past difficult experiences, restore relationships, and cultivate spiritual awareness. When trauma occurs, the logical mind is hijacked and physiology takes over in an effort to protect you. This leaves an imprint—your body wants to ensure that nothing like that will ever happen again. Being reminded of a traumatic event can trigger these automatic responses, leaving you feeling paralyzed or unable to take action. This book will help you understand why and how unresolved trauma can infiltrate all aspects of your life, including your mind and body—even when you’re not aware of its influence. With Heal the Body, Heal the Mind as a gentle guide, you’ll learn about different types of trauma, find helpful assessments, and discover how traumatic experiences—even childhood and incidental traumas—can affect all aspects of your life: your relationship choices, the roles you play in them, your sense of pleasure and desire, and how you approach your career, spirituality, and interactions with others. Using the combination of mind-body interventions, cognitive behavioral theories, research, case studies, and exercises woven into each chapter of this warm-hearted, relatable book, you’ll begin to address the unresolved trauma held in your body and advance your healing process. So, if you’re ready to move beyond the trauma that’s been holding you back in your relationships, at work, and in your spiritual practice, this guide will show you how.
