Book Synopsis The Intelligent Patient's Guide to the Doctor-Patient Relationship by : Barbara M. Korsch
Download or read book The Intelligent Patient's Guide to the Doctor-Patient Relationship written by Barbara M. Korsch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-11-05 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you feel that your doctor doesn't pay attention to what you say? Does your doctor cut you off when you try to explain how you feel? Do you think your doctor could remember your name without referring to your chart? Does your doctor seem to be in such a hurry that you don't even get a chance to ask your most important questions? Do you spend more time waiting than actually talking to your doctor? Do you understand what your doctor says? At one time or another, we have all had these complaints. This book will teach you how to ask the right questions, understand the answers, and show you how to take more control of your visits to the doctor and your own health. This is the first book in which communication pioneer Barbara M. Korsch, M.D., reveals what she has learned about the doctor-patient relationship dilemma during almost half a century of investigation. In clear, simple language, Dr. Korsch answers most of our common questions: How do I know when I'm sick enough to go to the doctor? How do I know if it's serious enough to go to the emergency room? What do I do if I can't follow the advice my doctor gives me? She walks us through a typical visit to the doctor, showing us how to prepare ourselves so we don't forget the question that has been worrying us for weeks as soon as we walk through the doctor's door. She gives important tips on how to survive the dreaded hospital experience. And she offers insight into the doctor's side of the relationship, showing how doctors are trained to be task-oriented and how their natural human sympathy is discouraged throughout their careers. Finally, she offers patients useful strategies for humanizing the relationship. Korsch's helpful, commonsense recommendations are extensively illustrated with real-life doctor-patient conversations which she recorded on audio and video tape over the course of the last thirty years. She was one of the first medical professionals to emphasize the importance of teaching doctors how to talk to patients as part of their medical training. She serves as consultant and lecturer to medical schools, hospitals, and medical practices throughout the world to help the next generation of doctors communicate with their patients. Above all, after years of research, she has found abundant evidence that the relationship patients form with their doctors directly determines the quality of the care they receive. This is a vital book for anyone who is concerned about their health and who wants to take control of their medical care. So much depends upon asking the right questions and on finding a doctor who will listen to you. This book gives you the tools and the confidence to do just that.

Book Synopsis How to Feel Better by : Frances Goodhart
Download or read book How to Feel Better written by Frances Goodhart and published by Piatkus. This book was released on 2013-10-03 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HIGHLY COMMENDED (POPULAR MEDICINE) AT THE BRITISH MEDICAL ASSOCIATION'S BOOK AWARDS 2014 In days gone by, people understood that a knock to your health takes its toll on your emotions, your relationships, your morale, your 'spirit'. But these days, we think that if the doctor has waved you off, then you are 'better'. We neglect what scientific studies show is a vital element of recovery: the emotional side of getting better. As a result, many of us struggle with hidden issues such as depression, stress and anxiety long after a health crisis. This new book, from the authors of The Cancer Survivor's Companion (highly commended by the BMA and winner of the Guild of Health Writers' Best Health Book 2012) centres on the crucial, research-based (but widely overlooked) truth that 'getting better' is not just about the body - emotions play a huge part. Often, a person's emotional state is the one thing stopping them from a full recovery. Contents include: Why getting better takes time; why relaxation and exercise are both vital; how to build your confidence and tackle low mood and depression; how to eat for recovery; how to deal with medical advice and communicate well with your doctor; how to keep family life and relationships on track and much more. There are also case histories to inspire readers as well as fascinating snippets from times gone by which help to make this an entertaining as well as a highly practical, inspiring read.

Book Synopsis How to Get Out of the Hospital Alive by : Sheldon Paul Blau
Download or read book How to Get Out of the Hospital Alive written by Sheldon Paul Blau and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 1998-07-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Sheldon Blau almost died after undergoing open-heart surgery—not from the surgery or heart disease, but from infectious bacteria introduced during surgery. His in-hospital experiences made him a better doctor, and inspired him to write How to Get Out of the Hospital Alive. The book describes the role of each member of the medical team, shows patients how to become active, effective members of that team, and offers concrete advice about ways to avoid the most common hospital-related errors. Ten Things You Can Do to Get Out of the Hospital Alive • Make sure all your known allergies are clearly marked on your chart, wrist band, or on a piece of paper taped above your bed. • Mark the area of your body to be operated on with a felt-tip pen. • Never eat or drink anything before surgery, even if the nurse brings you a food tray. • Tell your anesthesiologist if you're on any type of medication. • Have a reliable advocate with you as often as possible throughout your hospital stay. • Write your name prominently on a piece of paper and tape it to the wall above your bed. • Always ask the nurse to check the name and dosage of any medication he or she is about to give you. • Don't let anyone bully you. • Don't hesitate to get a second—or third—opinion. • Trust your instincts.

Book Synopsis Pick Up Your Own Damn Crutch! by : Anthony Green
Download or read book Pick Up Your Own Damn Crutch! written by Anthony Green and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2020-12-04 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hi, readers. I am Tony “the Tiger” Green. I have written this book, Pick Up Your Own Damn Crutch, for several reasons. It helps me work out mentally, the trials I have been through, allowing me to put in perspective regarding my life. There have been many good times in my life, and humorous times. I also hope my story will help others deal with their life trials, whether it is surgery/pain, mental illness/depression, or relationship/loneliness. I have always said, “Everyone is different, but we all have our strengths”. Respecting yourself is very important. Life can be more joyous if you respect others for who they are and care for their needs. This will always make you feel better about yourself. I believe God, our Creator, put each one of us here to write our own story. We are here in this wonderful world God had given us. We need to appreciate all and take care of the gifts that we have family, friends, and our environment and help lift those who are less fortunate. You might wonder how I named this book. It starts with a trip to McDonald’s with Mom and her best friend Lani Collins. I was 7 years old. Mom and Papa were always telling me to be careful and take care of my things. They would say don’t depend on someone to help you! They were a lot of old people who were there eating too and they kept watching us. When we were eating, Mom told me again to be careful with my crutches and don’t let them fall. After we ate and it was time to go, Mom told me again to get my crutches. When Mom and Lani reached the door, they looked back to make sure I was coming. As they looked, I dropped my crutches and said “Mom”! She yelled loud and everyone heard her say “Pick Up Your Own Damn Crutch!” All the people were shocked and Lani ran out the door because she was embarrassed. Ha ha ha! It has always been one of my favorite stories. I laugh about all the time with my family.
