In short, the book of Savage articles comprised the most complete, understandable and up-to-the-minute text-book of Holstein feeding information ever put together. The first edition was quickly snapped up by the breeders, and likewise by agricultural colleges and schools, who bought these books in quantity for text-book use. In view of this enthusiastic reception, backing up our judgment in the matter, we are issuing a third edition, revised and brought down to date. The entire subject of feeding dairy cattle, as handled by Professor Savage, is based upon actual methods in use by successful dairymen. This book differs from the ordinary text-book in the important respect that every theory is made to deliver the goods in actual practice before it is accepted. Professor Savage is recognized as an authority on feeding matters. His ideas have proven successful not only in his own experience, but in the hands of dairymen and breeders who have put them into practice. He is in charge of the foundation courses in Feeds and Feeding at Cornell University, and has done considerable experimental and research work in feeding in that institution. Several cows with records of 30 to 35 pounds have been bred and developed in the university herd, and one of these cows, Glista Ernestine, has made seven different 30-pound records. The handling of these cows forms the basis of an interesting chapter in this book. The details of the care and feed of a number of the leading producers, in both short and longtime tests, as given by the men in actual charge, form the basis of other chapters, invaluable to the man who is interested in getting the greatest possible returns from his test work. Altogether we can commend this book to our Holstein friends in full confidence that its careful study will result in added knowledge of the subject of feeding that will be of practical service to them in their business as Holstein breeders and dairymen. We want to make the language of cows a little better understood by the dairymen of this country. To know about cows, the farms and the best farm practices in different parts of our great country will make a man a better farmer on his own farm. With the reading of this book we hope that farmers may have their vision broadened and perhaps a suggestion will be found that will change a practice so that a little more money may be made and saved. At the time of writing this preface farming is said to be in a bad way. The lawmakers and the others are all busy trying to help the farmer. Some good will come of their efforts. We think, however, that the most good will come through the efforts of the farmer himself. He will build for himself on his own farm and will build for himself and for his neighbors when he joins with them in the community and state enterprises which he will help to build, at the foundation first, in his own community. Co-operative effort will make for "better farming, better business and better living." The dairy farmer is the best off of all. Conditions in Wisconsin and New York and the other dairy states show that. This is no time for anything but optimism because the demand for milk and dairy products is growing and the market for these is the foundation of the business. With the market for milk and dairy products becoming increasingly good the market for surplus dairy cattle will become better. The object in writing this book is to help some with all this. The results obtained in this experiment go in the same direction as those of the preceding ones, but the advantage from the heavy over the light grain feeding is more marked than in these, viz., an increase of 14% in the production of milk and 9% in the production of butterfat as a result of feeding a little over a ton more grain, With possible minor changes in the amounts of roughage eaten by the cows. The possible causes of this more pronounced reaction than that obtained in either of the previous experiments cannot be fully discussed here, but it may be suggested that it may be due to the relatively larger amount of grain fed on this experiment or a somewhat poorer quality of roughage fed to the cows, especially silage. It is plain that even in this case the cost of the extra grain fed is great er than What the increase in butterfat would bring even at retail prices, so that the result of this experiment alone furnishes no argument in favor of a heavy system of grain feeding. That evening he weighs the feed Of each cow, weighs the milk, and takes a sample Of the milk for testing. He records all figures in the barn book, from which he transfers them to the herd-record book. The barn book is the supervisor's record of the work, and the herd-record book remains in the possession Of the farmer as his record Of the work. The next morning the supervisor again weighs the feed, weighs the milk, and takes a sample Of the milk for testing. He mixes the two samples Of each cow's milk thor oughly and then tests the composite sample for percentage Of butter fat. The day the test is made is considered as the middle day of the testing period, and the record Of that day is multiplied by the number of days in the testing period. From the herd-record book the farmer can at any time get the record Of his herd and Of each cow for every month from the beginning of the testing year. He can also get totals for each cow. The herd records include feed cost and production Of milk and butterfat. The individual-cow records include all this and the number Of pounds Of each kind Of feed consumed. At the end of the testing year the farmer can get from the herd record book the yearly summary Of his herd and Of each cow. AS the years pass he can compare the yearly records and determine what progress his herd is making and what progress each cow is making. If the herd-record books are filled out completely and carefully, the farmer can get all this information quickly, and from this knowledge of the records Of his cows he can go forward, without guesswork, in the improvement of his herd. With a well-kept herd-record book, the farmer is able to build up his herd. Rapidly through careful selection, planned breeding, and proper feeding.
