This book was released on 2008-06 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: A, University of Copenhagen (Departement of Political Science Copenhagen), course: Financial Globalization, 14 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Within the field of International Political Economy the case of monetary unions has become a big issue. Especially the establishment of the EMU has led to numerous academic publications. An intense political but also scientific discussion arose about the Stability and Growth Pact of the European Monetary Union. In March 2005 the ministers of finance and economics of the European Union decided to form the Stability and Growth Pact in a more flexible way. In the future countries that are above the 3 % limit should be judged as individual cases. In the academic discussion few economists already claim this, to be the pacts death. The paper starts by providing some basic facts about the terms of the pact and it's application during the last years. Chapter 4 provides a short overview about the theoretical background to the field, which can be simplified as Monetarism vs. Keynesian Economics. The main research question is, how we should deal with the pact. Should it be kept like it is today? Or are there good options to change the pact? In chapter 5 I will point out the most important arguments for keeping the pact and for changing it. Chapter 6 finally goes into the latest academic discussion about a reform of the pact and presents different approaches in doing so.

Book excerpt: The continued debate on even the softened Stability and Growth Pact (SGP) highlights that the question of public debt in the European Monetary Union (EMU) needs further scrutiny. Both political economy models for emerging market sovereign debt and exchange rate regimes, as well as models on common pool and debt spillover problems in a monetary union point to an upward drift of public debt for countries joining EMU. In turn, this could lead to the expectation that, the more countries join EMU, the more pressure on an already battered SGP will develop. However, such models and first empirical research tend to focus only on the behaviour of governments - that is, the demand side on the market for government debt. Factors determining the supply side of government debt - i.e. capital markets - are most of the time left out of the analysis. This paper tries to fill this gap by analysing empirically the effects of both public debt demand and supply factors on the budget balances in the EMU candidate countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) as well as in EMU and other OECD countries from 1994 to 2005. The results suggest that, although demand factors seem to have played a more important role than supply factors, some evidence for market conditions limiting new debt is found. More interestingly, despite the SGP disappointment, membership of EMU, as well as the time of the convergence to EMU, so far appears to coincide with more positive budget balances. Since most of the SGP literature assumes that EMU will cause a bias for higher debt due to spillover effects between EMU member countries, this could warrant a different theoretical approach to the impact of monetary unions on government debt. -- monetary union ; fiscal stability ; government debt ; EMU enlargement

It is primarily aimed at individuals and organisations working on public finance issues in European Union (EU) countries, but should be of interest for anyone wanting an in-depth understanding of the SGP's functioning or searching for details on its implementation. It presents the legal basis, methodologies and procedures for implementing the SGP's two arms -- the preventive arm and the corrective arm."--Document home page.
Book Synopsis The European Union in the 21st Century by : Stefano Micossi
Download or read book The European Union in the 21st Century written by Stefano Micossi and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to this book are all members of EuropEos, a multidisciplinary group of jurists, economists, political scientists, and journalists in an ongoing forum discussing European institutional issues. The essays analyze emerging shifts in common policies, institutional settings, and legitimization, sketching out possible scenarios for the European Union of the 21st century. They are grouped into three sections, devoted to economics and consensus, international projection of the Union, and the institutional framework. Even after the major organizational reforms introduced to the EU by the new Treaty of Lisbon, which came into force in December 2009, Europe appears to remain an entity in flux, in search of its ultimate destiny. In line with the very essence of EuropEos, the views collected in this volume are sometimes at odds in their specific conclusions, but they stem from a common commitment to the European construction.

Book Synopsis Democracy in the EMU in the Aftermath of the Crisis by : Luigi Daniele
Download or read book Democracy in the EMU in the Aftermath of the Crisis written by Luigi Daniele and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book covers some of the major issues concerning the problematic relationship between respect for democratic principles and the new European Economic Governance. Innovative approaches are highlighted throughout the book: new frameworks and arrangements are proposed on the basis of efficiency analyses, as well as their institutional and legal suitability. Though the perspective adopted is essentially a legal one, the economic and policy background are also given due consideration. The papers presented here offer a balanced mix of empirical (including comparative) and theoretical analysis; several also combine the two approaches, carrying out empirical analyses, then setting the results against theoretical options. Given the relative dearth of literature on democratic principles and the EMU, let alone a comprehensive enquiry, the book marks a valuable new contribution.

Book Synopsis Dar Al Islam--the Mediterranean, the World System and the Wider Europe by : Peter Herrmann
Download or read book Dar Al Islam--the Mediterranean, the World System and the Wider Europe written by Peter Herrmann and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the process of a 'wider Europe' (EU-Commission President Romano Prodi's 'ring of friends') that extends from Marrakech in Morocco to St Petersburg in Russia gathering speed, the growing rift between Europe and America also is about how to deal politically with the countries of the Mediterranean-Muslim world. The house of Islam (Dar al Islam) was pivotal to the European path to the Renaissance and to the re-discovery of classic Greek philosophy. The Mediterranean policy of the European Union aims at a positive and co-operative relationship with the region. A successful integration of the Mediterranean South would have tremendous and positive repercussions for regional and world peace. World-wide leading experts from the field of world systems analysis, economics, integration theory, political science, theology and area studies, agnostics, Christians, Jews and Muslims alike discuss the issue with European decision makers. The outcome is an interdisciplinary evaluation of this projected export of peace, co-operation, dialogue and stability in the framework of world centre-periphery relationships.
