But when New York Times–bestselling author and expert navigator Tristan Gooley goes for a walk, he uses all five senses to “read” everything nature has to offer. A single lowly weed can serve as his compass, calendar, clock, and even pharmacist. In How to Read Nature, Gooley introduces readers to his world—where the sky, sea, and land teem with marvels. Sample Book Insights: #1 We are often the last people to know what is going on inside us. We suffer because there is no easy way to introspection. We are not a fixed destination, but an eternally mobile, unfocused, and vaporous specter. #2 Emotional skepticism is the recognition that our own minds can be faulty and misleading. It is the first step towards emotional maturity, which involves the understanding that we will never know everything, and the willingness to accept that fact. #3 The presence of the unknown past colors and sharply distorts our perceptions of the present. We interpret what is happening in the present through expectations fostered in long years whose real nature we have forgotten. #4 The picture doesn't show any of these things. The person who looks at it and the way they elaborate on it reveals far more about their emotional inheritance than it does about the image itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a thoroughly revised and updated second edition, this important volume describes the character, intentions and working methods of the pioneering School of Spiritual Science, as established by Rudolf Steiner within the framework of the re-founded Anthroposophical Society in 1924. It explains the School’s prerequisites for membership and examines the role of the First Class and its representatives’ responsibilities. The main body of the book features descriptions of the sections within the School of Spiritual Science, contributed by individuals responsible for leadership of those sections. They indicate how the School connects with daily work in various aspects of life – including medicine, agriculture, education, science and the arts – and how they relate to contemporary society. Also included are significant articles and lectures by Rudolf Steiner regarding his original intentions for the School, and practical information on the process of becoming a member. In keeping with the transparency that he called for, The School of Spiritual Science is available to anyone who wants to explore the work of this invaluable cultural institution.

Book excerpt: “A captivating guide to finding one’s way in the wild.”—The Wall Street Journal Publisher's note: The Nature Instinct was published in the UK under the title Wild Signs and Star Paths. Master outdoorsman Tristan Gooley was just about to make camp when he sensed danger—but couldn’t say why. After sheltering elsewhere, Gooley returned to investigate: What had set off his subconscious alarm? Suddenly, he understood: All of the tree trunks were slightly bent. The ground had already shifted once and could easily become treacherous in a storm. The Nature Instinct shows how we, too, can unlock this intuitive understanding of our surroundings. Learn to sense the forest’s edge from deep in the woods, or whether a wild animal might pose danger—before you even know how you know.

Book excerpt: "This book focuses on the challenge of helping students find a healthy sense of identity and belonging. It is especially concerned with common conflicts in schools based upon differing and competing identities. It develops an independent set of research-based strategies that evades simplistic, polarizing judgments and offers guidelines and tools for change leaders. The book takes on the many threats to a healthy sense of identity and belonging and shows how too much current thinking promises solutions but inadvertently often only exacerbates or sidesteps our challenges"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
