Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Build a Motor Launch Throughout the world, and remarkably so in this country, there are many bodies of water - lakes, rivers and ponds - that are not navigable by sail-craft, owing to their being surrounded by high banks or having rapid currents. On these waterways until of late years nothing could be used but rowboats. It is for voyaging in such waters the motor boat is particularly adapted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This look back at the great boatbuilders that sprung up on the shores of the Great Lakes stretches from the first use of internal combustion for marine applications in the late nineteenth century to the early-1960s, when wooden construction was increasingly replaced by fiber-glass and aluminum, and on to the early 1980s. More than covering lovely mahogany runabouts, this work also includes chapters on racers and cruisers/commuters. In addition to familiar names like Chris-Craft, Hacker, Century, and Lyman, there are also less frequently covered boats from names like Richards, Matthews, Burger, and Tiara. The final chapters explore the use of non-wood materials. Detroit was the epicenter of early-20th century boat-makers using engines from the nation's nascent automotive industry. Boat-makers, however, did not cluster as tightly around that city as did auto manufactures; they were found from the Thousand Islands of Lake Ontario to Chicago and Duluth. Despite this regionalism the Great Lakes builders, more than any others, influenced the entire world's power-boating community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canoeing, Sailing and Motor Boating: Practical Boat Building and Handling With most men whose homes are beside salt water, river or lake, the desire to get a oat and navigate their own craft is ineradicable. Begin ning with the boyhood batteau, we grow to the youth '3 catboat or dory, and then to manhood 's yacht or motor boat. The sea-faring blood seems well distributed throughout the country, as wit ness the army of inland bluejackets trained at the Great Lakes and other stations far from our sea coasts. Once a sailorman, always a sailorman, - even if the craft is of the most modest pretensions. And we do not outgrow our old loves. At forty we get as much fun out of the tiny canoe as from the expensive power cruiser, and to those of us whose purse (and we are many) does not permit anything resembling a fancy yacht, the craving to venture forth on the waters is well satisfied by a cruising canoe, a small sailboat, or a twenty-foot power boat, home-built, perhaps from knockdown frames. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seemed like a good idea. Tired of everyday life ashore, Farley Mowat would find a sturdy boat in Newfoundland and roam the salt sea over, free as a bird. What he found was the worst boat in the world, and she nearly drove him mad. The Happy Adventure, despite all that Farley and his Newfoundland helpers could do, leaked like a sieve. Her engine only worked when she felt like it. Typically, on her maiden voyage, with the engine stuck in reverse, she backed out of the harbour under full sail. And she sank, regularly. How Farley and a varied crew, including the intrepid lady who married him, coaxed the boat from Newfoundland to Lake Ontario is a marvellous story. The encounters with sharks, rum-runners, rum and a host of unforgettable characters on land and sea make this a very funny book for readers of all ages.
