Detailing how car companies aim to control the future of automobility through circular business models, Peter E. Wells highlights the pivotal role of governments in this unsustainable transition. How the Global Automotive Industry Stole our Green Mobility Future emphasises how major car manufacturers, supported by governmental subsidies and consumer incentives, have seized the opportunity to control the resources needed for batteries and reinforced car dependence. Wells demonstrates how this has created additional environmental threats, new concerns over national security, further inequalities for workers in distant supply chains, and increased financial barriers to travel. The book also covers the maladaptation and future of the automobile industry, electric SUVs and electric bicycles. This comprehensive book is an essential read for scholars of innovation, circular economies, environmental governance and transport policy. Practitioners and policymakers in socio-technical transitions, urban planning, environmental regulations, mobility and transportation will also find this an essential guide.

Book excerpt: A call to redefine mobility so that it is connected, heterogeneous, intelligent, and personalized, as well as sustainable, adaptable, and city-friendly. The twentieth century was the century of the automobile; the twenty-first will see mobility dramatically re-envisioned. Automobiles altered cityscapes, boosted economies, and made personal mobility efficient and convenient for many. We had a century-long love affair with the car. But today, people are more attached to their smartphones than their cars. Cars are not always the quickest mode of travel in cities; and emissions from the rapidly growing number of cars threaten the planet. This book, by three experts from industry and academia, envisions a new world of mobility that is connected, heterogeneous, intelligent, and personalized (the CHIP architecture). The authors describe the changes that are coming. City administrators are shifting from designing cities for cars to designing cities for people. Nations and cities will increasingly employ targeted user fees and offer subsidies to nudge consumers toward more sustainable modes. The sharing economy is coaxing many consumers to shift from being owners of assets to being users of services. The auto industry is responding with connected cars that double as virtual travel assistants and by introducing autonomous driving. The CHIP architecture embodies an integrated, multimode mobility system that builds on ubiquitous connectivity, electrified and autonomous vehicles, and a marketplace open to innovation and entrepreneurship. Consumers will exercise choice on the basis of user experience and efficiency, aided by “intelligent advisors,” accessible through their mobile devices. An innovative mobility architecture reconfigured for this century is a social and economic necessity; this book charts a course for achieving it.

Book excerpt: The Great Race recounts the exciting story of a century-long battle among automakers for market share, profit, and technological dominance—and the thrilling race to build the car of the future. The world’s great manufacturing juggernaut—the $3 trillion automotive industry—is in the throes of a revolution. Its future will include cars Henry Ford and Karl Benz could scarcely imagine. They will drive themselves, won’t consume oil, and will come in radical shapes and sizes. But the path to that future is fraught. The top contenders are two traditional manufacturing giants, the US and Japan, and a newcomer, China. Team America has a powerful and little-known weapon in its arsenal: a small group of technology buffs and regulators from California. The story of why and how these men and women could shape the future—how you move, how you work, how you live on Earth—is an unexpected tale filled with unforgettable characters: a scorned chemistry professor, a South African visionary who went for broke, an ambitious Chinese ex-pat, a quixotic Japanese nuclear engineer, and a string of billion-dollar wagers by governments and corporations. “To explain the scramble for the next-generation auto—and the roles played in that race by governments, auto makers, venture capitalists, environmentalists, and private inventors—comes Levi Tillemann’s The Great Race…Mr. Tillemann seems ideally cast to guide us through the big ideas percolating in the world’s far-flung workshops and labs” (The Wall Street Journal). His account is incisive and riveting, explaining how America bounced back in this global contest and what it will take to command the industrial future.

It examines the electromobility revolution in the traditional automotive industry and brings together multidisciplinary expertise to provide insights into the shift towards electromobility. New vehicular technologies may develop in various directions, including the smart car, and this context raises two important questions: will car manufactures maintain control over the industry? And if so, will they be able to come up with sufficiently radical innovations to steer us into the electromobility of tomorrow? One thing is certain: the transition to electromobility will be a revolution. The book’s combined approach to understanding this complex reality enables readers to better visualize the possible future directions. It offers anyone interested in electromobility an excellent review of the subject and a useful roadmap to future developments.

This book was released on 2020-02-08 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essay sheds light on the future of the automotive industry, identifies the types of cars of the future, and elucidates why gasoline powered vehicles do not warrant the cost. Moreover, why plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are the utmost best type of vehicles is delineated, why electric vehicles do not warrant the cost is explicated and the myriad of problems associated with buying an electric vehicle are demystified in this essay. Furthermore, the criteria for how to determine if purchasing a car is worth the investment is revealed and how to earn substantial money online so that you can afford to finance your vehicle purchase is expounded upon in this essay. The future of the automotive industry will usher in unprecedented changes that will profoundly revolutionize the automotive industry. In other words, the upcoming changes to the automotive industry will be commensurate with the automotive technological advancements in the digital era that will reshape the driving experience. It stands to preponderantly reason that in the coming decades fully autonomous vehicles will be available for personal transportation uses on the global vehicle market. This revolutionary change will allow vehicle owners to work enroute to their destinations. Moreover, there will no longer be a need for human drivers, thus displacing more workforce participants. Customer demand in the ride sharing economy will also grow as the cost disparity between vehicle ownership and accessing ride sharing services further narrows due to the elimination of the human driver and unprecedented technological advancements to vehicles that render ride sharing services ever more affordable to procure. "Overall global car sales will continue to grow, but the annual growth rate is expected to drop from the 3.6 percent over the last five years to around 2 percent by 2030. This drop will be largely driven by macroeconomic factors and the rise of new mobility services such as car sharing and e-hailing" (Gao, Kaas, Mohr, & Wee, 2016) services. It also stands to reason that companies that offer ride sharing services will help drive automobile sales in the coming decades as they increase their fleets of autonomous vehicles. "A detailed analysis suggests that dense areas with a large, established vehicle base are fertile ground for these new mobility services, and many cities and suburbs of Europe and North America fit this profile. New mobility services may result in a decline of private-vehicle sales, but this decline is likely to be offset by increased sales in shared vehicles that need to be replaced more often due to higher utilization and related wear and tear" (Gao, Kaas, Mohr, & Wee, 2016). Autonomous vehicles will still offer tremendous utility to city dwellers in the coming years as most cities egregiously fail to satisfy public transportation needs and abstain from future-proofing their eroding transportation infrastructure. It is projected that almost 70% of the global "population will reside in urban areas by 2050" ("UN: 68 percent,"). This migration to urban areas will render car ownership all the more unappealing. While paying to utilize public transportation systems and ride sharing services can be expensive, it may culminates in being far less expensive than paying for monthly car loan payments, monthly parking fees, vehicle registration fees, high auto insurance rates, and high maintenance repair costs. Vehicles profusely depreciates each and every year at the car owner's expense and can be very expensive to procure, maintain, retain, and operate. Even though most public transportation systems are not modernized nor streamlined to satisfy growing public transportation needs, they at least help curb the city dweller's need for vehicle ownership. It stands to therefore reason that the annual growth rate of vehicle sales will be preordained to decline in the coming decades as more and more customers live in cities and do not experience the need to own cars.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 1,7, VU University Amsterdam , language: English, abstract: “I believe in horses, automobiles are a passing phenomenon”1 (Kaiser Wilhelm II, 1905) More than 100 years ago when the first motorized vehicles appeared on the streets, Kaiser Wilhelm II was not able to see the potential of this invention and how it would change the world he lived in. Today we are facing the next revolution of transportation technology, elec-tric mobility (e-mobility). In consideration of continuous scarcity of fossil resources and pro-gressive environmental issues caused by increasing amounts of CO2 emissions in our atmos-phere, a rethinking of universally accepted habits is needed. Public and private transportation account for 19% of the overall CO2 emissions in Germany and is therefore one of the largest contributors to climate change and local air pollution (Umweltbundesamt, 2011). This circumstance also shows the great political relevance of this topic as well as the need to make the whole industry more sustainable. A sustainable innovation like the electric car can help to decrease the negative externalities of economic growth and reduce the ecological footprint of a modern-day life. Against this background, the German government proclaims that Germany should be the leading market for e-mobility; aiming to have a diffusion rate of one million electric cars until 2020 (Delhaes, 2008). In order to achieve this, they are dependent on the innovation activities of the German automotive industry. But consumers as well as car manu-factures seem to be skeptical about this novelty, which results in a comparable small diffusion rate of only 7114 electric cars in the end of 2012 (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, 2013). For instance, in Denmark the diffusion rate of new electronic cars is 30 times higher than in Germany and even The Netherlands have a rate that is 8 times higher (Masson, 2013). The mentioned diffu-sion rate shows the total number of newly registered electric cars in comparison to the total number of traditional fuel cars within a year. This is curious on a first view as Germany has the largest automotive industry in the world, consisting of firms like BMW, Daimler, Opel and Volkswagen. One would hence expect great interest and a proactive stance from both the firms as well as the government in supporting this innovation. (...) Table of Content 1. Introduction 1.1. Three massively significant and converging automotive trends – electrification, self-driving technology and car-sharing – will together transform the way we live, work, and move about in our increasingly urban environment. This book coins the term ‘Mobility Revolution’ and is a summary of the ‘three zeroes’ that are already defining the future for the automobile industry: Zero Emissions, Zero Accidents and Zero Ownership. The impact will go beyond the automotive industry and its suppliers – urban infrastructure, construction, logistics – and even local cafés will need to think and operate differently. Based on countless interviews, the book is highly current and thoroughly researched, whilst also fun to read. It is an eye-opener to the new world that awaits us as the Mobility Revolution unfolds. The Mobility Revolution is a must-read for anyone interested in the future of the automobile industry, our cities, and the way we live.

This book provides a long-overdue vision for a new automobile era. The cars we drive today follow the same underlying design principles as the Model Ts of a hundred years ago and the tail-finned sedans of fifty years ago. In the twenty-first century, cars are still made for twentieth-century purposes. They are inefficient for providing personal mobility within cities—where most of the world's people now live. In this pathbreaking book, William Mitchell and two industry experts reimagine the automobile, describing vehicles of the near future that are green, smart, connected, and fun to drive. They roll out four big ideas that will make this both feasible and timely. The fundamental reinvention of the automobile won't be easy, but it is an urgent necessity—to make urban mobility more convenient and sustainable, to make cities more livable, and to help bring the automobile industry out of crisis.

Book excerpt: The world motor industry faces a series of crises that threaten its existence. The two main threats are chronic lack of profitability and environmental concern, both demanding accelerated change in an ever more tightly regulated market. The Death of Motoring? identifies the industry?s concern with technology, particularly body technology, as a major weakness, making the industry dependent on volume demand. This leads to a reassessment of the role of Henry Ford as the father of mass production and the reinstating of E.G. Budd as the true originator of the paradigm of mass production in today?s car industry. This analysis is set within the context of the causes and implications of globalisation and of changes in the relationship between car makers and their suppliers. The authors explore the solutions for more sustainable mobility. Using existing ideas about alternatives to the modern car they formulate future scenarios dependant upon technological as well as legislative and social change. They confirm that the industry can survive, but can only do so by shifting towards selling personal mobility instead of just cars.
