Book excerpt: How the Bible Defines: Election It is not uncommon to find the word election defined in a Bible dictionary as "chosen by God for salvation" or something similar. Many dictionaries and lexicons include an alternate definition: "choice, select, best in its class." A close look at the New Testament will reveal a number of passages where this word occurs without a clear indication of the intended definition. In these passages, how are we to determine which was the intended meaning? The Greek Old Testament is an often-overlooked resource that provides rich scriptural contexts from which to derive the meaning of key biblical words. You are cordially invited to embark on an exploration of Old Testament stories and passages that contain "election." Along the way, you will see what the inspired writers meant when they used the word in certain stories, such as that of Korah's rebellion and of the remnant in Isaiah's prophecy. By the end, you just might find that one of the above definitions has no basis within the pages of scripture.

Originally published in 1897, three years after Easton's death, it contains almost 4,000 entries and dozens of illustrations and maps. Readers will find definitions of terms ranging from Alpha to Zuzims. In between they'll find entries both obscure and common, such as Emims (a warlike tribe of giants), Hagar (Sarah's handmaid), immortality, meekness, Pentecost (the feast of harvest), seventy weeks (a prophetic period of time before the coming of the Messiah), sling (what David used to slay the giant), and Zorah (Samson's birthplace).

Book excerpt: Defined Bible Study Book includes content for eight sessions, personal study between group sessions, applicable Scripture, "How to Use This Study," tips for leading a group, a leader guide, and a family-discipleship page. When you introduce yourself to someone for the first time, you have an opportunity to define yourself. You disclose your name, profession, and interests. These factors help our culture define us, but are those answers enough? People are struggling in ten thousand ways because of identity issues. They can't help but ask, who am I? and why do I matter? Can our culture really provide meaningful answers to those questions, or do we need something deeper and more significant? Before asking, who am I? we need to be able to answer, who is God? If we can't answer the first question, we will never answer the second. The problem with our search for identity is that we are looking in all the wrong places. Scripture teaches that we are all made in the image of God. We do not define ourselves--the Creator does. We were all created to be known and loved by God. Once those answers are clear, we can move forward and discover all God has called us to be. Session topics: 1. Uniquely Created by God 2. Uniquely Broken by Sin 3. Transformed by the Gospel 4. Who We Are in Christ 5. What We Have in Christ 6. Living Out Our Identity 7. Walking in the Spirit 8. Walking in Mission Features:; Videos and session previews featuring Alex and Stephen Kendrick ; Eight small-group sessions; Personal-study opportunities for ongoing spiritual growth; Promotional video; Social-media assets for the group leader Benefits:; Answer the questions "Who is God?" and "Who am I?"; Define yourself by God's standard.; Learn how sin has uniquely broken you.; Discover how you can be transformed by the gospel of Christ.; Understand what it means to be created for good works.; Develop a deeper appreciation for the Book of Ephesians.; Learn to walk with Christ in stronger faith and assurance.; Use the unique way God has gifted and created you to serve others.; Take hold of the grace available to you in Christ.; Find purpose and meaning in Christ.; Define yourself by the Creator's call instead by a cultural identity.

Book excerpt: Danny Hodges became the senior pastor of a young church fellowship known as Calvary Chapel in St. Petersburg, Florida, in April of 1984. Three years later when he was introduced to Pastor Chuck Smith and the Calvary Chapel movement, he felt an immediate sense of being at home and was grateful to God for leading him to this network of churches that upheld a simple, biblical philosophy of ministry and well-balanced doctrine. Calvary Chapel St. Petersburg soon became a fellowship of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, and since that time God has steadily grown the ministry from a handful of mostly young single adults to a large church full of families. It has been exciting to see God's Spirit bring many to salvation through Jesus Christ, see lives change and mature in the Lord, see relationships bloom and grow, see ministries evolve and prosper, see a hunger for the Word of God and see a passionate desire to win the lost to Jesus. Pastor Danny and his wife, Wendy, consider it an honor to serve this growing body of believers together with their four children, Tanner, Hayden, Jairus and Audra.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All religious traditions that ground themselves in texts must grapple with certain questions concerning the texts' authority. Yet there has been much debate within Christianity concerning the nature of scripture and how it should be understood—a debate that has gone on for centuries. Christian Theologies of Scripture traces what the theological giants have said about scripture from the early days of Christianity until today. It incorporates diverse discussions about the nature of scripture, its authority, and its interpretation, providing a guide to the variety of views about the Bible throughout the Christian tradition. Preeminent scholars including Michael S. Horton, Graham Ward, and Pamela Bright offer chapters on major figures in the pre-modern, reformation, and early modern eras, from Origen and Aquinas to Luther and Calvin to Barth and Balthasar. They illuminate each thinker's understanding of the Christian scriptures and their views on interpreting the Bible. The book also includes overview chapters to orient readers to the key questions regarding scripture in each era, as well as chapters on scripture and feminism, scripture in the African American Christian tradition, and scripture and postmodernism. This volume will be indispensable reading for students and all those interested in the nature and authority of Christian scripture.

This book was released on 2013-12-15 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believers need to understand that the God is the Standard for everything including the definition and meaning of words as revealed in the Bible especially in the New Testament Scriptures. There are many translated words from the original text of the New Testament such as love ("agape"), to love("agapao"), good("agathos" or "kalos"), righteous)("dikaios"), evil("poneros" or "kakos"), faith("pistis"), truth("aletheia"), etc., that cannot be correctly understood when the meanings are taken from world dictionaries nor from experts in Hebrew and Greek languages. For example, the biblical meaning of love("agape") is that The God is love(1 John 5:8,16). Mankind are NOT love! Accordingly, only One, the God is able to love("agapao"), no mankind is able to love("agapao"). This is the bible definition of love("agape") and to love("agapao"). This Book 26 reveals the biblical meaning of the translated words truth and the truth. Truth in the original Greek text is "aletheia." A typical world or mankind definition of truth is: truthfulness; constancy; actuality; accuracy or adjustment; an established fact; known facts; knowledge(Chambers Twentieth Century dictionary. New Edition, by M. Macdonald 1972), According to the world dictionary any one can speak the truth, while the biblical definition of "aletheia" or truth is that "the word of the God is truth." And that "Jesus Christ is the truth." This means any mankind who speaks accurately of what actually happens is only speaking a fact, but is not speaking "truth" because only the word of the God is "truth." Paul in Romans 3:4 revealed that the God came into being or exists as "true"("alethes") but every mankind a "falsifier"("pseustes"). This means that no mankind came/comes into being as "true" and therefore whatever any mankind speak cannot be "truth"("aletheia") unless mankind speak "the word of the God" or mankind are led by the God through His Son, Jesus Christ by His Spirit to speak His word. The biblical definitions of "truth"("aletheia") and "the truth"("ho aletheia") are given in John 17:17 and John 14:6. "Truth" and "the truth" are also linked to the God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit and also to holy, holiness, righteous, righteousness, love and faith and the gospel of salvation. In fact only when true believers are made holy in "the truth" of the God will they be able to enter into the kingdom of the God or to receive everlasting life. This Book translates every scripture in the New Testament Greek Received Text concerning "truth" ("aletheia") and "the truth"("ho aletheia") and its importance to the salvation of every true believer.

Book excerpt: What is the gospel? It seems like a simple question, yet it has been known to incite some heated responses, even in the church. How are we to formulate a clear, biblical understanding of the gospel? Tradition, reason, and experience all leave us ultimately disappointed. If we want answers, we must turn to the Word of God. Greg Gilbert does so in What Is the Gospel? Beginning with Paul's systematic presentation of the gospel in Romans and moving through the sermons in Acts, Gilbert argues that the central structure of the gospel consists of four main subjects: God, man, Christ, and a response. The book carefully examines each and then explores the effects the gospel can have in individuals, churches, and the world. Both Christian and non-Christian readers will gain a clearer understanding of the gospel in this valuable resource.

With just the right mixture of humor and insight, compassion and incredulity, A Year of Biblical Womanhood is an exercise in scriptural exploration and spiritual contemplation. What does God truly expect of women, and is there really a prescription for biblical womanhood? Come along with Evans as she looks for answers in the rich heritage of biblical heroines, models of grace, and all-around women of valor. What is "biblical womanhood" . . . really? Strong-willed and independent, Rachel Held Evans couldn't sew a button on a blouse before she embarked on a radical life experiment--a year of biblical womanhood. Intrigued by the traditionalist resurgence that led many of her friends to abandon their careers to assume traditional gender roles in the home, Evans decides to try it for herself, vowing to take all of the Bible's instructions for women as literally as possible for a year. Pursuing a different virtue each month, Evans learns the hard way that her quest for biblical womanhood requires more than a "gentle and quiet spirit" (1 Peter 3:4). It means growing out her hair, making her own clothes, covering her head, obeying her husband, rising before dawn, abstaining from gossip, remaining silent in church, and even camping out in the front yard during her period. See what happens when a thoroughly modern woman starts referring to her husband as "master" and "praises him at the city gate" with a homemade sign. Learn the insights she receives from an ongoing correspondence with an Orthodox Jewish woman, and find out what she discovers from her exchanges with a polygamist wife. Join her as she wrestles with difficult passages of scripture that portray misogyny and violence against women.
