Book excerpt: Excerpt from How Minnesota Became a State At this juncture, the head of the breezy Mr. Thompson of Kentucky appeared above the troubled surface long enough to pay his respects to the arguments advanced by some of his opponents. By way of introduction, he complimented the ability of Mr. Seward and professed admiration for that power which enabled him, while representing New York, to carry New England in one pocket and Ohio in the other. He wittily described the contest which he said would take place between the Republicans and Democrats for the foreign vote in the various States, and interpreted their zeal in behalf of alien suffrage as a sop to the foreign vote. There was doubtless some truth in this latter assertion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
