Book excerpt: Puppetry has become a significant force in contemporary theatre and thousands of puppets from various cultures and time periods have been collected by scholars, enthusiasts, and curators, who wisely realized that these material images can teach us much about the societies for which they were created. This book consists of essays by the curators of the most significant puppet collections in the United States and by leading scholars in the field. In addition to the descriptive and analytical essays on the collections, the book includes an overview of American puppetry today, a history of puppetry in the United States, and essays on the theater of Julie Taymor, the Jim Henson Company, Howdy Doody's custody case, puppet conservation, and the development of virtual performance space. The fourteen collections discussed include those of the Smithsonian Institution, the Harvard University Theatre Collection, the Brander Matthews Collection at Columbia University, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta. Appendices provide a listing of additional puppetry collections and a filmography of puppetry at the New York Public Library Donnell Media Center. The work concludes with a bibliography and index and is illustrated with many beautiful photographs of puppeteers and puppets on display and in performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Howdy Folks! I'm Fuster Buskins is a collection of the humorous stories and song poems of hillbilly comedy character Fuster Buskins, as played by actor/singer/songwriter and banjo picker Darrell Sroufe. In an over twenty-five year career of entertaining at southern theme parks; major entertainment venues; doing road tours throughout America; performing on national radio and television programs; and recording several albums played on radio stations in the United States and Europe, Fuster Buskins built quite a large repertoire of material. As his shows ran from one to two hours in length, Fuster's stories and poem songs were cut, changed, added to and discarded over the years. Now, in this volume alone they all appear with enough material to fill a book and enough good old time southern humor to fill hearts with laughter for years to come!

Book excerpt: Author Desi Downey had never been out of the States and rarely out of the Midwest when her husband's job was transferred to China. Without a clue--and virtually overnight--Downey was thrust into a new and bewildering existence. Ni Howdy is Downey's nitty-gritty, down-to-earth, and hilarious account of how she triumphed over the trials and tribulations of becoming accustomed to daily life in a foreign country. From the horror of her first encounter with the primitive "squatty potty" to the difficulties of grocery shopping, Downey paints a vivid and humorous picture of her experiences. With no-holds-barred candid wit, Downey writes frankly about herself, her fellow expatriates, and the Chinese people, zeroing in on both the differences and similarities of two vastly different cultures. Dispelling all those old stereotypical myths about East vs. West, Ni Howdy brings two incredibly diverse cultures together with laughter and heartwarming anecdotes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literacy, Media, Technology considers the continued significance of popular culture forms such as postcards, film, television, games, virtual worlds and social media for educators. Following multiple pathways through technological innovation, the contributors reflect on the way in which digital and portable devices lead to new and emerging forms of reading, participating and creating. Rejecting linear conceptualisations of progression, they explore how time is not linear as technological advances are experienced in multiple ways linked to different personal, social, political and economic trajectories. The contributors describe a range of practices from formal and informal education spaces and interrogate some of the continuities and discontinuities associated with literacy, media and technology at a time when rapidly evolving communicative practices often meet intransigence in educational systems. The chapters adopt diverse forms: historical perspectives, personal story and reflection, project reports, document analysis, critical reviews of resources, ethnographic accounts, and analyses of meaning-making within and beyond educational institutions. Together, they provide multiple insights into the diverse and fluid relationships between literacy, media, technology, and everyday life, and the many ways in which these relationships are significant to educational research and practice.

Book excerpt: Where they walked was somewhat holy ground without the benediction of sprinkled holy water or eggs Benedict by a church that serves the hungry and without the benediction of anything holy. However, that sanctified ground was unknown to the duo to be holy at all. As a matter of fact, it lay in front of their willing feet that thread it. Nonetheless, the ground they thread was predestined and set apart like some sanctified spiritual eclipse that would cause a shadow by a passing moon somewhere onto the earth, and so their shadow did appear on earth, not because of prediction or being holy but by being "matter of factuality!" Their spiritual eclipse was inverted because of a weird type of light covered every inch of earth that their eyes could see. Because of their type of light, the entire species of earthly bats became totally blind. They also had to wear dark glasses like movie stars, carry a parasol like Michael Jackson, and were advised by a bat committee to liberally spread sunscreen on every inch of their batty skin! Holy Batman! The jokers who thwarted reality and destiny were real, more real than cartoons, and twice as real as characters of a fiction novel. "How real were they, Batman?" "Very real, Robin." And so the comedy begins.

Book excerpt: When Diane Wilson, fourth-generation shrimp-boat captain and mother of five, learns that she lives in the most polluted county in the United States, she decides to fight back. She launches a campaign against a multibillion-dollar corporation that has been covering up spills, silencing workers, flouting the EPA, and dumping lethal ethylene dichloride and vinyl chloride into the bays along her beloved Texas Gulf Coast. In an epic tale of bravery, Wilson takes her fight to the courts, to the gates of the chemical plant, and to the halls of power in Austin. Along the way she meets with scorn, bribery, character assassination, and death threats. Finally Wilson realizes that she must break the law to win justice: She resorts to nonviolent disobedience, direct action, and hunger strikes. Wilson's vivid South Texas dialogue resides somewhere between Alice Walker and William Faulkner, and her dazzling prose brings to mind the magic realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, replete with dreams and prophecies.

This book was released on 2012-04-04 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Read a whole sample chapter on KneeHowdy.com "Knee Howdy" and other micro-stories in this book will help you learn to memorize how to say any difficult Chinese word with no need for flashcards or rote memorization techniques. The mission of this book is not only to help you memorize how to say your first words of Mandarin Chinese, but to also inspire you to learn hundreds or even thousands more. You shouldn't have to use flashcards, just use your imagination instead. When children memorize all the names of the characters in an animated feature film, it isn't because they study long and hard, it's because they actively engage in these stories with their imaginations. We will use this same technique to help us conquer two major obstacles to learning Chinese words. The first problem with Chinese vocabulary is that there are very few words that sound similar to their English counterparts. An example of one such rare cognate is "kafei", which sounds similar to "coffee". It makes that word easy to remember, but most Chinese words sound nothing like their English counterparts. Unless you stretch your imagination and twist the words a little, there will be no hook on which to hang your new words. To that end, in each chapter there are brief dialogs followed by wacky little micro-stories stories that will stimulate your imagination and make the new vocabulary words practically unforgettable. You can improve your memory even further if you tell your friends about them when you are away from the book. Retelling the stories in your own words and laughing out loud with friends will embed the words deeper in your mind. A second problem we will conquer is the often-intimidating 4 tones. You have to stand up and get your body moving. For instance, if a word you are trying to remember is a 4th tone word, you might stomp your foot when you say that word. Make the tone hint movements described in this book and you can stay physically active while you at the same time build mental muscle memory. A Word of Caution: Please, do not fall into the trap of thinking that it would be easier to just memorize these words by rote. Don't be a fuddy duddy! It has been scientifically proven that if you are having fun while learning, then you will produce better results. So stand up and face your enemy. Get ready to learn to be a quick draw.

Book excerpt: “Robison has a poet's eye for the unconscious surrealism of commercial America.” —The New York Times Book Review Tell Me reflects the early brilliance as well as the fulfilled promise of Mary Robison's literary career. In these stories—most of which appeared in The New Yorker throughout the eighties—we enter her sly world of plotters, absconders, ponderers, and pontificators. Robison's characters have chips on their shoulders; they talk back to us in language that is edgy and nervy; they say “all right” and “okay” often, not because they consent, but because nothing counts. Still, there are small victories here, small only because, as Robison precisely documents, larger victories are impossible. Here then, among others, is “Pretty Ice,” chosen by Richard Ford for The Granta Book of American Short Stories, “Coach,” chosen for Best American Short Stories, “I Get By,” an O. Henry Prize Stories selection, and “Happy Boy, Allen,” a Pushcart Prize Stories selection. These stories—sharp, cool, and astringently funny—confirm Mary Robison's place as one of our most original writers and led Richard Yates to comment, “Robison writes like an avenging angel, and I think she may be a genius.” “Mary Robison's short stories are short, subtle, and substantial... her ironic sense of detail bursts from every sentence.” —Vogue “Word for fucking word, her work demands our attention.” —David Leavitt, The Village Voice
