Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to present an account of several different studies of the relationship of food additives to child behavior and learn ing problems. Because the outcome of these studies has deep, personal interest for many parents and their children, I have tried to present the studies in such a way that the logic and evidence of the studies is com prehensible to informed adults interested in weighing the facts for themselves. Unfortunately, the facts do not always follow a straightfor ward course. Part of my purpose has been to show the complexities lying in the way of the answers to apparently simple questions. I believe it is healthy and important for parents to examine the scientific evidence on issues affecting their daily lives, and to become aware of the process of research surrounding controversial claims regarding new therapies. New ideas in behavioral science are often difficult to track down and evaluate, and consequently there may be a large gap between therapeu tic claims and evidence bearing on those claims. The mother who won ders whether her child should be treated with a special diet is unlikely to have the facts necessary to make a judgment of the costs and benefits. She should however, know some of the major pitfalls in coming to a conclusion for or against such a course.

Book excerpt: In 1973, San Francisco allergist Ben Feingold created an uproar by claiming that synthetic food additives triggered hyperactivity, then the most commonly diagnosed childhood disorder in the United States. He contended that the epidemic should not be treated with drugs such as Ritalin but, instead, with a food additive-free diet. Parents and the media considered his treatment, the Feingold diet, a compelling alternative. Physicians, however, were skeptical and designed dozens of trials to challenge the idea. The resulting medical opinion was that the diet did not work and it was rejected. Matthew Smith asserts that those scientific conclusions were, in fact, flawed. An Alternative History of Hyperactivity explores the origins of the Feingold diet, revealing why it became so popular, and the ways in which physicians, parents, and the public made decisions about whether it was a valid treatment for hyperactivity. Arguing that the fate of Feingold's therapy depended more on cultural, economic, and political factors than on the scientific protocols designed to test it, Smith suggests the lessons learned can help resolve medical controversies more effectively.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Health - Nutritional Science, grade: 2,0, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, short ADHD: Who has not yet heard this term, especially when it comes to children? Over the last decade the number of children diagnosed with this disease has risen significantly (in the United States from 7.8% in 2003 to 11.0% in 2011. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014). But although this diagnosis becomes more and more common, there is still a lot that we do not know about its causes and right treatment. Not only does the right medication help to guarantee children a normal development, but research also found out that the right diet can have a positive effect on the symptoms of hyperactivity. Artificial food colors in particular have been named again and again in this context. This essay focuses on the most important research concerning the field of artificial food colors and their impact on children with hyperactivity: There are several studies which suggest a link between an increase of hyperactive behavior and certain artificial food colors, and while some countries have already taken steps to remove the tested colors from child nutrition, others still deny their potential danger. This shows how important a more thorough investigation of this topic is and that the restrictions concerning artificial colors in food for children should be revised everywhere.

Book excerpt: Abstract: A critical review of research in the area of hyperkinesis and food additives analyzes the design and findings of experimental and clinical studies of the hypothesized relationship between hyperkinesis and diet, proposed by Feingold in 1973. A preliminary paper concluded that scientific evidence was not available to support Feingold's claim that food additives cause hyperactivity and learning disability in many children. New data has involved 7 double-blind controlled clinical trials in which children were challenged with food additives or placebo; 2 other studies tested the total Feingold (additive-free) diet against a control diet. The problems related to research design, the results of these studies, and in vitro and animal investigations are described. No behavioral changes resembling the dramatic improvements reported anecdotally by Feingold and others were observed; nor were there episodes of behavioral deterioration in children challenged with artificial food colors. No changes in public food policy concerning the use of artificial colors by the food industry are recommended.

Abstract: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a developmental disorder of inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. It is the most commonly diagnosed psychosocial problems in childhood with continuing impact into adulthood. This systematic review aims to identify the role of food additives, specifically artificial food coloring, in ADHD and its symptoms. PubMed, Sciencdirect, Cochrane Library and Google Scholar databases (1991-April 2012) were searched, which was supplemented by manual searches of the reference lists. Seven randomized or quasicontrolled trials of elimination diet were summarized. Six of these studies showed artificial food coloring was positively associated with ADHD and its symptoms. This review provides some evidence that artificial food coloring plays a role in ADHD and its symptoms. However, the studies reviewed only showed behavioral improvement after eliminating certain type of artificial food coloring, which does not imply artificial food colorings cause ADHD. Additionally, small sample size, inconsistent definition of artificial food colouring, subjectively reported ADHD using various assessment tools, and possibly publication bias limit the generalizability of the findings. If causal, reducing the intake of artificial food coloring could provide an alternative treatment of ADHD in the future. Understanding the mechanism underlying the association may provide insights into the developmental origins of ADHD.
