On the one hand one may argue that the massive suburbanization which has been so typical for the developed world for many decades will result in the death of the city. On the other hand it is possible that the emergence of new lifestyles will result in a revitalization of urban society. The understanding and modelling of household development processes in an urban context can give important answers to the question of the future of the city. This book describes the development of a dynamic model for the urban housing market. The model is implemented and tested empirically in the Amsterdam metropolitan region. The model consists of three related submodels which are linked by means of an accounting framework, namely (1) a dynamic household model that predicts transitions in the household structure in the agglomeration of Amsterdam, (2) a housing demand model that evaluates the outcomes of the household transitions in terms of (changing) household preferences, and (3) an allocation model that relates the housing demand, disaggregated by zone, dwelling type and household type, to housing supply.

The book is organized into fourteen chapters. The first chapter focuses on population growth and the development of the Nigerian urban system. The second chapter traces the roots of Nigerian urban and regional planning system. The third chapter discusses the institutional framework for planning the evolving planning institutions and the emergence of the planning profession in the country and Rivers State. Chapter four examines political and economic forces and the substantive urban planning issues and problems faced by planners in the PH metropolis. Chapter five focuses on PH urban politics, planning administration and institutions. Chapters six and seven focus on the responses of planning to environmental, housing problems, transportation, land use, local economic development, and urban services issues. It documents how urban development and planning policies pertaining to these issues affect urban population groups and how the populations have responded to the outcomes of conventional planning intervention and offers alternative policies. In chapter eight, the problems of plan implementation is examined focusing on the implementation of the Diobu Master Plan, while chapters nine, ten, and eleven present physical planning and development control within the context of local government system in Rivers State. In chapter twelve, the book presents planning for a new town, New Finima, in Rivers State, designed to resettle the Finima. Chapters thirteen and fourteen dwell on the problem of rural urban balance and regional planning in Rivers State and Nigeria in general. It focuses special attention on the problem of urban and rural disparities as the key issue facing regional planning and suggests measures for ensuring that urban planning promotes the welfare of all and enhances the opportunities for the procurement of benefits of development programs by all socioeconomic groups. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expansion of cities in the late C19th and middle part of the C20th in the developing and the emerging economies of the world has one major urban corollary: it caused the proliferation of unplanned parts of the cities that are identified by a plethora of terminologies such as bidonville, favela, ghetto, informal settlements, and shantytown. Often, the dwellings in such settlements are described as shacks, architecture of necessity, and architecture of everyday experience in the modern and the contemporary metropolis. This volume argues that the types of structures and settlements built by people who do not have access to architectural services in many cities in the developing parts of the world evolved simultaneously with the types of buildings that are celebrated in architecture textbooks as 'modernism.' It not only shows how architects can learn from traditional or vernacular dwellings in order to create habitations for the people of low-income groups in public housing scenarios, but also demonstrates how the architecture of the economically underprivileged classes goes beyond culturally-inspired tectonic interpretations of vernacular traditions by architects for high profile clients. Moreover, the essays explore how the resourceful dwellings of the underprivileged inhabitants of the great cities in developing parts of the world pioneered certain concepts of modernism and contemporary design practices such as sustainable and de-constructivist design. Using projects from Africa, Asia, South and Central America, as well as Austria and the USA, this volume interrogates and brings to the attention of academics, students, and practitioners of architecture, the deliberate disqualification of the modern architecture produced by the urban poor in different parts of the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, city economies have restructured in response to the decline of older industries. This has involved new forms of planning and urban economic development, a return to traditional concerns of city building and a focus on urban design. During this period, there has also been a marked rise in our understanding of cultural development and its role in the design, economy and life of cities. In this book, John Montgomery argues that this amounts to a shift in urban development. He provides a long overdue look at the dynamics of the city, that is, how cities work in relation to the long cycles of economic development and suggests that a new wave of prosperity, built on new technologies and new industries, is just getting underway in the Western world. The New Wealth of Cities focuses on what effect this will have on cities and city regions and how they should react. Original and wide-ranging, this book will be a definitive resource on city economies and urban planning, explaining why it is that cities develop over time in periods of propulsive growth and bouts of decline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whatever the national trends are with regard to real estate – whether they are booming or busting–what really matters is what the market conditions are in your region, town, or neighborhood. For as David Lereah points out, in the end, all real estate is local. What does that mean? Even during the real estate boom of 2001-2005, a great many cities and regions did not participate in the boom–they lagged behind, or even decreased in value. Similarly, when prices began to fall nationally, there were plenty of regions and locales where prices rose, and sales boomed. As Lereah makes clear, the most important factor in buying or selling a home isn’t what is going on nationally–it is what is going on in your local market. Evaluating present and future trends and influences in your region or neighborhood is essential to creating long term wealth, whether you are in a buyer’s or a seller’s market. And David Lereah, as the Chief Economist for the National Association of Realtors, shows you how to determine the conditions in your neighborhood. Lereah reveals how to: Evaluate the DNA of homes in the town or county or region you are considering (every town has its own real estate DNA–the characteristics that make a region or city more or less desirable to live in). Determine whether property values in your targeted neighborhood are on the rise. Research future real estate influences and trends, from migration into or out of the region, to plans to attract or develop new businesses in the area. Understand the local factors that can affect your investment in the future. Countless books offer advice on how to buy and sell a home. But ALL REAL ESTATE IS LOCAL is the first book to explain how knowing the ins and outs of the local market you are targeting is essential to deciding when, where, and what to buy.

Book excerpt: The aim of the Dublin-Belfast Development Corridor is to link several towns and cities by various modes of communication in order to create a poly-centric mega-city region in Ireland on a scale large enough to compete with the major urban clusters of continental Europe. This volume brings together an interdisciplinary team of leading scholars and practitioners from both sides of the border to discuss the Dublin-Belfast corridor and the associated challenges of cross-border development from economic, geographic, regional studies, sociological and planning perspectives. As well as providing insight into this important project, the book also throws light on regional development more generally.
