Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, the developing world has seen unprecendented urban growth and urban areas have had to deal with a number of complex problems as a result. While population growth is one of the factors contributing to the deprivation and decay characteristic of most urban areas in the developing world, there are other factors. Apart from demographic and economic factors, the political organization factor of centralization has concentrated decision-making and with it resources in the urban areas, leading to further rural-urban migration. Another factor is one of colonialism. The transfer of foreign social structures and technology, while offering alternatives, has dislocated and significantly altered indigenous patterns of development in the developing world. This book examines a region where this last factor is a major significance; Zambia's copperbelt. Here, the concentration of towns which were developed very rapidly in the 1930s made Zambia one of the most highly urbanized Sub-Saharan countries. By focusing on copperbelt towns, the book provides a critical analysis of the development of urban policy in Zambia. Aspects of conflict and cooperation between different interest groups and - where relevant - their economic relationships are explored and a structural conflict model of urban management is proposed. The book concludes that, with proper management, existing and emerging sectional interests in urban areas can help provide conditions which foster the formulation of equitable urban policy. Although focused on Zambia, the proposed structural conflict approach has potential for wider application.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Devising a workable housing policy in a country with apparently insurmountable housing problems, presents a great challenge. With the help of an award from UN-HABITAT, Zambian authorities attempted to do just this, in a process which is an ideal candidate for scrutiny. This study analyzes the goals, means and instruments that were used to formulate the policy, as well as its planned implementation. It examines whether the policy could have achieved its goals had it been implemented, and represents a valuable addition to the body of knowledge which can help to evaluate the potential for success ...

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Demographics, Urban Management, Planning, language: English, abstract: There are many potential problems with rapid urbanization in any country around the globe, chief of which is the challenge of resource exploitation for sustainable development. This paper studies the effects of rapid urbanization in Zambia, which has seen emerging inefficiencies in housing markets, urban transportation, and urban finance, as well as leading to increased urban pollution and crime. In contrast, plans for urban renewal in Zambia are predominantly donor driven in response to poor urban settlement planning in an environment where planning regulations are barely recognized and enforced.

Book excerpt: A rare study originating in Africa, on the gender impact of housing privatisation in Zambia; and on the impact of privatisation on social class and the overall constitution of the housing stock. It considers questions such as: whether privatisation mainly benefits men and thus implies a masculisation of ownership; whether it benefits mainly rich people; what tendencies can be identified regarding housing maintenance and extensions of housing stock; how the policy of privatisation was formulated and implemented by government and loca authorities, to what extent these policy formulations were democratic; how gender policy and activism responded to the privatisation of housing; and whether it affects gender power relations. The author is Associate Professor of Peace and Development Research at Gothenburg University, Sweden.
