The critic of the theatre may be viewed as its chronicler, or as the contributor of materials to a future history of the stage. Hazlitt held that some record of the actors was due to the world; while he noted that the player's art is one that perishes with him, leaving no trace of itself but in the faint descriptions of the pen or pencil. The lives of the players cannot be related without constant reference to contemporary reviews of their performances. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. His pencil has been withheld from warts, scars, and freckles, but the nobler features have been painted with industrious care. With several individuals he has perhaps not failed, and where he ventures to offer a judgment either on defects, talents, or degrees of excellence, he has not only endeavoured to be correct in weighing the testimony of others, but well supported where he has found himself constrained to differ from received Opinions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Players Blue Book In compiling The Players Blue Book the aim has been to supply a series of photographs and short biographies of those actors and actresses best known at the present time and to furnish in convenient form a souvenir of this age of the drama in America from the view point of those who interpret it. It is not meant to be a critical work, nor a work of reference, though accuracy has been sought after above all else. Information about the people of whom the book tells has been obtained from the people themselves, though in a few cases where this information was found to be too meager, other sources have been questioned. The vain imaginings of press agents have been carefully eliminated, and the attempt has been to present the matter in an attractive form and to say as much as possible in the space alloted to each biography. Of course, in a work of this kind it is well nigh impossible to please every one. Some names may have been omitted which by right should have place, and other names added which, in the opinion of some, should have been left out. It has been the object of the compiler to present those who have by their efforts and talents found place in the front ranks of the profession and to give facts without prejudice. When it has been possible to procure well authenticated anecdotes or bits of life history not exactly bearing upon theatrical experience but of an interesting nature, these have been briefly told, in the belief that dry information is not digestible without a sauce of story. The compiler wishes to thank the members of the profession, managers, and others who have assisted in making the completion of this work possible, and to acknowledge his gratitude especially to those whose portraits and biographies appear herein. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pastimes and Players Though the earliest mention of our national English game by its modern name of cricket occurs no further back than the reign of Elizabeth, it is quite clear that Britons batted and bowled away merrily long before the days of the Virgin Queen, though they called their pastime by other names. The name, of course, is of minor importance, if the principle of the games can be proved to be the same, as nothing is more common than to find a pastime with many different names, according to the place where it is played. Thus, rounders is still the same good old English game, though Edinburgh street boys call it dully, and our American cousins have elevated it into their national game under the name of base ball. So with our game: and the only question is whether the identity of cricket with club-ball, stool-ball, and the other names we shall notice below, can be proved as clearly as that of, say, rounders with base-ball, or hockey with shinty and hurling. This question may easily be answered in the affirmative. Before entering, then, on the history of our great game under its present name, let us glance at some of these Old pastimes, and see if we can find in them the rude beginnings from which the scientific game of today has been built up. Book excerpt: "You talk about destiny, well, you can't rule that out. We were hard-nosed and that showed up in 1957." -- Braves catcher Del Crandall to editor Gregory H. Wolf Few teams in baseball history have captured the hearts of their fans like the Milwaukee Braves of the 19505. During the Braves' 13-year tenure in Milwaukee (1953-1965), they had a winning record every season, won two consecutive NL pennants (1957 and 1958), lost two more in the final week of the season (1956 and 1959), and set big-league attendance records along the way. This book celebrates the Milwaukee Braves' historic 1957 World Series championship season. Led by the bats of National League Most Valuable Player Henry Aaron and slugging third baseman Eddie Mathews and the "Big Three" pitching trio (Cy Young Award winner Warren Spahn, Lew Burdette, and Bob Buhl) the Braves won 95 games. The team enjoyed standout seasons by shortstop Johnny Logan, outfielder Wes Covington, and catcher Del Crandall And GM John Quinn pulled off the biggest trade of the summer, acquiring All-Star second baseman Red Schoendienst from the New York Giants. The Braves cemented their place in history by defeating the New York Yankees in the World Series. In one of the greatest performances in the history of the fall classic, crafty Lew Burdette tossed his second consecutive shutout (and third complete game) to defeat the Bronx Bombers in Game Seven, in Yankee Stadium. A collaborative effort of 32 members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), Thar's Joy in Braveland! The 1957 Milwaukee Braves portrays that memorable team with life stories of all of the roster players, the manager and coaching staff, the owner, the general manager, and sportswriters and radio announcers. Summaries of the regular season and World Series re-create the magic of that unforgettable season. To which I have replied, In one respect they are just alike, both being unfathomable and beyond the com prehension of the human mind. The game of checkers, as an intellectual pastime, has no supe rior. It causes the rich and poor to intermingle in the most friendly manner capital and labor are often seen struggling across the board in the most social style. Esteem and friendships spring up between devotees of the game, both far and near. It was claimed by some that the playing of checkers is condu cive to longevity. Judging from the long lives of some of the Buffalo players, I must admit that such is the case. Here is my old friend L. L. Hodges, with whom I played many a game forty years ago and since, and now at the age of eighty nine he plays a few hours nearly every afternoon. Mr. Hodges commenced playing at the age of ten years, and at fifteen was probably the best player in this country, and for many years was not excelled by any player in the United States, and I have no doubt he is now the strongest player of his age. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Football for Public and Player In the pages that follow the author has endeavored by means of simple diagrams, and explanations shorn as far as possible of technicality, to give alike to the spectator and the younger player, especially the ambitious schoolboy who has not had the advantage of expert coaching either on the blackboard or afield, some idea of the plays that have been and are successful under the existing rules, and of the generalship that either wins games or loses them with honor. The plays and the use of them tell the story, and if the spec tator will apply inductive reasoning to the big games, finding his rule of play from the cases at hand, he will find the fascination of the game more than trebled.
