Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jets are ubiquitous in the Universe, but ill-understood. Conservative books base their interpretations on focused stellar winds, ejected "bullets", black-hole central engines, and in-situ upgrading of electron energies via shocks. This volume, however, attempts a uniform interpretation of the bipolar-flow family, involving extremely relativistic pair plasma as the jet substance, and rotating magnets (possibly burning disks) as the central engines. Among the discussed sources are SS 433, YSO jets, planetary nebulae, our galactic center, and the class of extragalactic QSOs, both radio-loud and radio-quiet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hubble Space Telescope has produced the most stunning images of the cosmos humanity has ever seen. It has transformed our understanding of the universe around us, revealing new information about its age and evolution, the life cycle of stars, and the very existence of black holes, among other startling discoveries. But it took an amazing amount of work and perseverance to get the first space telescope up and running. The Universe in a Mirror tells the story of this telescope and the visionaries responsible for its extraordinary accomplishments. Robert Zimmerman takes readers behind the scenes of one of the most ambitious scientific instruments ever sent into space. After World War II, astronomer Lyman Spitzer and a handful of scientists waged a fifty-year struggle to build the first space telescope capable of seeing beyond Earth's atmospheric veil. Zimmerman shows how many of the telescope's advocates sacrificed careers and family to get it launched, and how others devoted their lives to Hubble only to have their hopes and reputations shattered when its mirror was found to be flawed. This is the story of an idea that would not die--and of the dauntless human spirit. Illustrated with striking color images, The Universe in a Mirror describes the heated battles between scientists and bureaucrats, the perseverance of astronauts to repair and maintain the telescope, and much more. Hubble, and the men and women behind it, opened a rare window onto the universe, dazzling humanity with sights never before seen. This book tells their remarkable story. A new afterword updates the reader on the May 2009 Hubble service mission and looks to the future of astronomy, including the prospect of a new space telescope to replace Hubble.

Book excerpt: This study employs cognitive theory as a heuristic framework to interrogate the agency of female types in select Italian Renaissance paintings, with emphasis on Venus, Medusa, the Amazon, Boccaccio's Lady Fiammetta/Cleopatra, Susanna, the Magdalene, and the Madonna. The study disrupts assumptions about the identity of sitters and readings of paintings as it challenges paradigms of female representation. It interrogates why certain paintings were crafted, by whom and for whom. Works are placed in the context of meta-painting, with stress on the cognitive decisions negotiated between patron and artist. The ludic aspects of several paintings are examined with a fine grain semiotic approach to expand their iconographies. Psychoanalytic readings are unpacked, based on the flawed mythological metaphors and incomplete clinical studies of Sigmund Freud's theorizing. The rubric of female agency is deliberately selected to unify popular but enigmatic master paintings of disparate subjects.

Book excerpt: Two cousins who start a food stall at their local night market get a serving of murder in this first novel of a delicious new cozy mystery series by Jennifer J. Chow, bestselling author of Mimi Lee Gets a Clue. When Yale Yee discovers her cousin Celine is visiting from Hong Kong, she is obliged to play tour guide to a relative she hasn’t seen in twenty years. Not only that, but her father thinks it’s a wonderful idea for them to bond by running a food stall together at the Eastwood Village Night Market. Yale hasn’t cooked in years, and she hardly considers Celine’s career as a social media influencer as adequate experience, but because she’s just lost her job at her local bookstore, she feels she has no choice. Yale and Celine serve small dishes and refreshing drinks, and while business is slow, it eventually picks up thanks to Celine’s surprisingly useful marketing ideas. They’re quite shocked that their bubble tea, in particular, is a hit—literally—when one of their customers turns up dead. Yale and Celine are prime suspects due to the gold flakes that Celine added to the sweet drink as a garnish. Though the two cousins are polar opposites in every way, they must work together to find out what really happened to the victim or the only thing they’ll be serving is time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional wisdom holds that comic books of the post–World War II era are poorly drawn and poorly written publications, notable only for the furor they raised. Contributors to this thoughtful collection, however, demonstrate that these comics constitute complex cultural documents that create a dialogue between mainstream values and alternative beliefs that question or complicate the grand narratives of the era. Close analysis of individual titles, including EC comics, Superman, romance comics, and other, more obscure works, reveals the ways Cold War culture—from atomic anxieties and the nuclear family to communist hysteria and social inequalities—manifests itself in the comic books of the era. By illuminating the complexities of mid-century graphic novels, this study demonstrates that postwar popular culture was far from monolithic in its representation of American values and beliefs.

Beyond Astura is a grand science fiction-epic fantasy reminiscent of The Wheel of Time, The Belgariad, and The Lord of the Rings series all rolled into one. In the third novel of the series, “The Flow of Power”, all sentient beings face a mind afflicting evil, a deadly foe no one could prepare for. The existence and power of the insidious, and alien, One Mind can no longer be denied as it closes in on Crystalyn Creek. She is the only being—a mere human—that has ever thwarted its raw hunger to feed on the emotions and memories stemming from brain neurons throughout its long lifespan. With her sister Jade as the unwilling host, the parasitic creature is far stronger than it ever has been. Defeating such evil without harming her sibling becomes a desperate trial of instinct and survival. With the power of the great river of magic dwindling, Crystalyn’s symbol magic is crucial against the alien’s aggression, with its horde of controlled people and a black dragon. Meanwhile, a young and untrained User of magic makes his way across the land unknowingly tied to Crystalyn’s fate. Even with their collective strength, it may not be enough for anyone to survive what came from the cold darkness of space. Whether of Dark or Light affinity, human or nonhuman, all must stand against it or succumb to a state of mind worse than death…

It brings together new perspectives on strategies of representation, trauma, dislocation, and gender roles. It also claims a place for Eastern Europe on the map of transnational feminism. Like the geographic explorers of earlier centuries, they venture into uncharted spaces, come upon new worlds, expand the knowable, and challenge thinking about the place of humans in all things. Collected here are the most exciting moments of recent astronomical explorations, presented by the award-winning science reporters of The New York Times. Recent leaps in technology have allowed astronomers to peer deeply into the universe and to bring into focus fascinating and unsuspected phenomena. Cosmic Dispatches conveys in thrilling detail the meaning and significance of what scientists have been learning about our universe.
