Book excerpt: In the present scenario, a growing need is stressed on having wireless networks both indoors and outdoors of diverse large environments like public areas, corporate offices, and government sectors, schools, and colleges. Traditional network deployments, on the other hand, generally rely on either bridging or rather on the full CSS deployment method while often making use of NAT on every access point. This causes interference with access points operating beyond the DHCP server lease limits, with frequent loop issues arising within the wireless infrastructures. Thus, network administrators face the challenge of adding many simultaneous access points that do not have the ability to be integrated, thus giving rise to numerous challenges in meeting demand with reliable networking solutions that provide quick distribution of vouchers or enable user registrations per ID, especially during peak usage periods involving large numbers of users who are connected concurrently.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs) has attracted great research interest in recent years. A Mobile Ad Hoc Network is a self-organizing multi-hop wireless network where all hosts (often called nodes) participate in the routing and data forwarding process. The dependence on nodes to relay data packets for others makes mobile ad hoc networks extremely susceptible to various malicious and selfish behaviors. This point is largely overlooked during the early stage of MANET research. Many works simply assume nodes are inherently cooperative and benign. However, experiences from the wired world manifest that the reverse is usually true; and many works [3] [10] [9] [8] [12] [19] have pointed out that the impact of malicious and selfish users must be carefully investigated. The goal of this research is to address the cooperation problem and related security issues in wireless ad hoc networks. As a rule of thumb, it is more desirable to include security mechanisms in the design phase rather than continually patching the system for security breaches. As pointed out in [2] [1], there can be both selfish and malicious nodes in a mobile ad hoc network. Selfish nodes are most concerned about their energy consumption and intentionally drop packets to save power. The purpose of malicious nodes, on the other hand, is to attack the network using various intrusive techniques. In general, nodes in an ad hoc network can exhibit Byzantine behaviors.

Book excerpt: "If we had computers that knew everything there was to know about things using data they gathered without any help from us we would be able to track and count everything, and greatly reduce waste, loss, and cost. We would know when things needed replacing, repairing or recalling, and whether they were fresh or past their best. The Internet of Things has the potential to change the world, just as the Internet did. Maybe even more so." Kevin Ashton, originator of the term, Internet of Things An examination of the concept and unimagined potential unleashed by the Internet of Things (IoT) with IPv6 and MIPv6 What is the Internet of Things? How can it help my organization? What is the cost of deploying such a system? What are the security implications? Building the Internet of Things with IPv6 and MIPv6: The Evolving World of M2M Communications answers these questions and many more. This essential book explains the concept and potential that the IoT presents, from mobile applications that allow home appliances to be programmed remotely, to solutions in manufacturing and energy conservation. It features a tutorial for implementing the IoT using IPv6 and Mobile IPv6 and offers complete chapter coverage that explains: What is the Internet of Things? Internet of Things definitions and frameworks Internet of Things application examples Fundamental IoT mechanisms and key technologies Evolving IoT standards Layer 1/2 connectivity: wireless technologies for the IoT Layer 3 connectivity: IPv6 technologies for the IoT IPv6 over low power WPAN (6lowpan) Easily accessible, applicable, and not overly technical, Building the Internet of Things with IPv6 and MIPv6 is an important resource for Internet and ISP providers, telecommunications companies, wireless providers, logistics professionals, and engineers in equipment development, as well as graduate students in computer science and computer engineering courses.
