Book excerpt: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is one of the most common disorders of the gastrointestinal tract to result in hospitalization. Although most patients with AP will experience an uneventful disease course, those that develop moderate-to-severe AP can be challenging to manage. Rapid recognition, accurate diagnosis and prediction of severity, together with appropriate treatment, are therefore key in achieving the best outcomes for patients and for preventing subsequent episodes of AP. Written by two pancreatologists with extensive experience of managing patients with AP as well as in clinical research, 'Fast Facts: Acute and Recurrent Pancreatitis' provides a comprehensive, evidence-based guide to: - The pathophysiology and etiology of AP - Fundamentals of diagnosis - Predicting the likely severity of an episode of AP - Monitoring and managing complications in the early and later stages of disease - Preventing recurrence This book will be of interest to all those who may be involved in the care of patients with AP, including internal medicine specialists, gastroenterologists, intensive care specialists, surgeons and endoscopists. Contents: • Pathophysiology • Epidemiology and etiology • Diagnosis • Prognosis • Definitions for complications and severity classification • Early management • Management of symptomatic collections • Management of other local complications • Preventing recurrence and monitoring for late complications after acute pancreatitis

Book excerpt: Clinical Pancreatology Since the book Clinical Pancreatology for Practising Gastroenterologists and Surgeons was first published sixteen years ago, the knowledge and clinical management of pancreatic diseases have developed markedly. Thanks to the development of the translational research and the from bench to bedside concept, much progress from the lab has been applied to clinical practice. In addition, several highly relevant clinical trials published over the last years have resulted in the update and optimisation of clinical guidelines. A new and validated classification of severity and complications of acute pancreatitis is firmly rooted in clinical practice and has been the basis for the development of minimally invasive approaches to pancreatic necrosis. The etiopathogenic knowledge of chronic pancreatitis and other pancreatopaties, like that associated with diabetes mellitus, has developed significantly. Especially important has been the development of the field of cystic pancreatic tumours, which has been reflected in the publication of several guidelines and consensus reports over the last few years. Most research efforts have focused on pancreatic cancer, which have led and will further lead to a significant increase in the therapeutic armamentarium against this devastating disease. Finally, many newly published studies have changed the concept, causes, clinical relevance, diagnosis and treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. This new edition of Clinical Pancreatology for Practising Gastroenterologists and Surgeons has enjoyed the collaboration of the world’s leading experts in each of the areas of clinical pancreatology with the aim of facilitating gastroenterologists, surgeons, oncologists, internists, nutritionists, diabetologists, paediatricians, radiologists, pathologists and other specialists in their decision making when facing patients with pancreatic diseases in their daily clinical practice. All in all, this book supplies an indispensable update of the relevant aspects of clinical pancreatology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to raise awareness of IgG4-related sclerosing cholangitis among practicing physicians and to equip readers with a sound understanding of the principles of diagnosis and treatment. Clinical, serological, and histopathological features are clearly described and imaging appearances on all relevant modalities are illustrated, covering the bile duct and other involved organs. Differential diagnosis from other diseases, including primary sclerosing cholangitis and cholangiocarcinoma, is precisely explained. Information is then presented on all significant current and emerging therapeutic strategies, including steroids, immunosuppressive drugs, and rituximab. Finally, attention is drawn to significant prognostic features. While IgG4-related sclerosing cholangitis is now a widely acknowledged condition, most practitioners are still liable to misdiagnose it owing to a lack of familiarity with its presenting features. This book should help to rectify the situation and will be an asset for all who may encounter the disease in clinical practice.

Book excerpt: Nutritional oncology is an increasingly active interdisciplinary field where cancer is investigated as both a systemic and local disease originating with the changes in the genome and progressing through a multi-step process which may be influenced at many points in its natural history by nutritional factors that could impact the prevention of cancer, the quality of life of cancer patients, and the risk of cancer recurrence in the rapidly increasing population of cancer survivors.Since the first edition of this book was published in 1999, the idea that there is a single gene pathway or single drug will provide a cure for cancer has given way to the general view that dietary/environmental factors impact the progression of genetic and cellular changes in common forms of cancer. This broad concept can now be investigated within a basic and clinical research context for specific types of cancer. This book attempts to cover the current available knowledge in this new field of nutritional oncology written by invited experts. This book attempts to provide not only the theoretical and research basis for nutritional oncology, but will offer the medical oncologist and other members of multidisciplinary groups treating cancer patients practical information on nutrition assessment and nutritional regimens, including micronutrient and phytochemical supplementation. The editors hope that this volume will stimulate increased research, education and patient application of the principles of nutritional oncology.NEW TO THIS EDITION:* Covers hot new topics of nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics in cancer cell growth * Includes new chapters on metabolic networks in cancer cell growth, nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics* Presents substantially revised chapters on breast cancer and nutrition, prostate cancer and nutrition, and colon cancer and nutrition* Includes new illustrations throughout the text, especially in the breast cancer chapter * Includes integrated insights into the unanswered questions and clearly defined objectives of research in nutritional oncology * Offers practical guidelines for clinicians advising malnourished cancer patients and cancer survivors on diet, nutrition, and lifestyle * Provides information on the role of bioactive substances, dietary supplements, phytochemicals and botanicals in cancer prevention and treatment

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where do you begin to look for a recent, authoritative article on the diagnosis or management of a particular malignancy? The few general oncology textbooks are generally out of date. Single papers in specialized journals are informative but seldom comprehensive; these are more often preliminary reports on a very limited number of patients. Certain general journals frequently publish good in-depth reviews of cancer topics, and pub lished symposium lectures are often the best overviews available. Unfortu nately, these reviews and supplements appear sporadically, and the reader can never be sure when a topic of special interest will be covered. Cancer Treatment and Research is a series of authoritative volumes which aim to meet this need. It is an attempt to establish a critical mass of oncology literature covering virtually all oncology topics, revised frequently to keep the coverage up-to-date, easily available on a single library shelf or by a single personal subscription. We have approached the problem in the following fashion. First, by dividing the oncology literature into specific subdivisions such as lung can cer, genitourinary cancer, pediatric oncology, etc. Second, by asking eminent authorities in each of these areas to edit a volume on the specific topic on an annual or biannual basis. Each topic and tumor type is covered in a volume appearing frequently and predictably, discussing current diagnosis, staging, markers, all forms of treatment modalities, basic biology, and more.
