Book excerpt: Cold winter days call for hot knights. Join these three champions, be they ancient or modern, as they seek the maidens who can match their fire. Knight Errant: Lady Juliana Verault joined the religious Beguine community to seek safe haven, but when she’s entrusted with a letter from the pope that could radically change the church’s stance on women, her life is thrown in turmoil. Knight errant Sir Robert Clarwyn has been sent by King Edward I of England to marry her off as political leverage. If he can’t find a way to compel her to return to England, he’ll lose any chance of regaining his family lands and redeeming his heritage. Can Juliana find a way to use this godsend for her own agenda—without risking their hearts, too? Her Knight in Black Leather: When his father falls ill, Michael Brant returns to the hometown he ditched years ago. His first night in town, he rescues a damsel in distress who has no clue about his family ties. But Cat can’t continue to treat him like a one-night stand when Michael’s dark past puts her in danger. Can he find a way to keep her safe without risking his heart? Secrets of the Fog: When the dryad Tera discovers the portal on Alcatraz Island is buzzing with an arrival, she thinks her goddess mother has come to visit. Instead she finds an otherworldly warrior causing mass destruction among the San Francisco tourists. Sabin is six-feet-six of hard-bodied soldier, used to subduing demons twice his size. But he’s brought to his knees by the beautiful Tera and barely gets the chance to deliver the dire news: an ancient grudge has come to life. Eris, the Goddess of Chaos, has held a bitter hatred for Tera’s mother, Artemis, for more than 400 years—and now she’s ready to destroy all dryads, including Tera. Only together can Tera and Sabin stop the impending destruction. Sensuality Level: Sensual

Yves Sucat was a Crusader trapped in a canine body...until a beautiful twenty-first century dog groomer offered the missing link to break his spell. But Regina Patterson was no fluffy-headed female who would instantly melt at Yves' silvery seduction. The more time he spent with the tender-hearted blonde, the less he was able to keep his paws—hands!—off of her. Regina was much more comfortable with dogs than men, and the stunningly handsome – stunningly male – knight who now shared her apartment was no exception. She'd hoped to find a man as loyal as the pooches she pampered day after day, but would Yves's broken curse end with her own broken heart?

After a knight has achieved the Order of the Crown, he must then begin his training in the virtues of courage and heroism in order to achieve the Order of the Sword. This is the second tale of Sir Pirvan the Wayward, whose reluctant and inauspicious beginnings bore few clues to his potential as a Knight of the Sword or as a Knight of the Crown, nor as a mentor for another similarly dubious prospect for Krynn's greatest order of chivalry. Roland J. Green is the author of the Starcruiser Shenandoah and Wandor series and numerous Conan novels, and is coauthor (with Jerr Pournelle) of the Jannisaries series. The Warriors series details the exploits of the heroes and villains of the War of the Lance.

Book excerpt: Historians have widely studied the late-nineteenth-century southern agrarian revolts led by such groups as the Farmers' Alliance and the People's (or Populist) Party. Much work has also been done on southern labor insurgencies of the same period, as kindled by the Knights of Labor and others. However, says Matthew Hild, historians have given only minimal consideration to the convergence of these movements. Hild shows that the Populist (or People's) Party, the most important third party of the 1890s, established itself most solidly in Texas, Alabama, and, under the guise of the earlier Union Labor Party, Arkansas, where farmer-labor political coalitions from the 1870s to mid-1880s had laid the groundwork for populism's expansion. Third-party movements fared progressively worse in Georgia and North Carolina, where little such coalition building had occurred, and in places like Tennessee and South Carolina, where almost no history of farmer-labor solidarity existed. Hild warns against drawing any direct correlations between a strong Populist presence in a given place and a background of farmer-laborer insurgency. Yet such a background could only help Populists and was a necessary precondition for the initially farmer-oriented Populist Party to attract significant labor support. Other studies have found a lack of labor support to be a major reason for the failure of Populism, but Hild demonstrates that the Populists failed despite significant labor support in many parts of the South. Even strong farmer-labor coalitions could not carry the Populists to power in a region in which racism and violent and fraudulent elections were, tragically, central features of politics.

Book excerpt: Long ago, an evil wizard sold his soul to the devil in exchange for supreme power. He betrayed and murdered his fellow wizards as he built an army of half-demon, half-animal overlords that marched against the forces of Videnland. The Knights of Videnland rode against this evil, along with the last remaining great wizards of their time. The forces of good exiled the evil wizard to another dimension and were victorious. This campaign became legendary, as did the heroes of that time. Now, many years later, the war has been all but forgotten. All that remains are the stories that have been passed down from generation to generation. However, the evil wizard that once threatened the land has found a way out of his prison. Renewing his war upon the realm, all that stands in his way are an old wizard and three young warriors who are destined to become legends themselves. The times ahead will determine the fate of each of these young men, who find themselves championing the fight against evil and are thrown in the middle of an epic conflict. Non-stop battle keep the action in high gear, including an amphibious assault on the Elven kingdom, a dragon-led siege on the Dwarven stronghold, and demon gladiators fighting to the death.

Book excerpt: The Knights at the Round Table is a collection of humorous tales and fabulous, easy-to-prepare recipes guaranteed to fill your homes with love, laughter, and satisfied appetites. The time tested recipes and fresh new ones bring: the warmth of family traditions; the personal touch of shared recipes from friends; and delightful new dishes created from the author’s travels and dining experiences. This eclectic collection of recipes have their origins in various parts of the world including America, Italy, Mexico, Central and Eastern Europe, and Spain. Because of changing lifestyles and the eating habits of health-conscious friends, the author has included some vegan and vegetarian dishes and pointed out ways you can change regular recipes to meatless fare. Recognizing that our fast paced world has created a need for two kinds of cooking—“weeknight” and “weekend” meals—the author included both. Weeknight eating requires quick, easy-to-prepare meals and weekend dining and entertaining calling for slightly more elaborate but still easy-to-prepare fare. The Knights at the Round Table serves up a plentiful helping of appetizers, soups, bread, salads, light dishes, entrées, sides, and a generous mixture of incredible desserts to satisfy both those needs. It offers something for everyone to enjoy! The author’s instructions are easy to follow and are blended together with tips that simplify and explain methods of food preparations that make once difficult tasks actually quite easy. Her real life tales will delight, amuse, and inform you…some will have you laughing as you cook! Meals will never be the same as you savor the mouth-watering dishes in The Knights at the Round Table.

Dangerous and deadly, Alistair has spent hundreds of years with his back turned on his duty after the brutal murder of his mate, and he wants nothing more than to be left alone. When his brothers discover what they believe to be a dark witch roaming the woods near their home, Alistair is furious. The witches killed his mate, and he hasn't had a kill in a long time. One look into Kevin's mismatched eyes and Alistair is floored. He immediately rushes into protective mode, protecting his mate from his brothers, who want Kevin dead. Kevin is Alistair's mate, reincarnated after being murdered by their enemy. It sounds outlandish, but when Alistair kisses him, Kevin can't resist. He wants to be taken by this man, wants to be dominated by him—even when horrifying memories from the past start to return. Protective Knight - Alistair, a walking fantasy, is dangerous, deadly, and willing to kill all evil with a flick of his sword. He practically walked out of a romance novel. Murdered in a past life by this same evil force, Kevin doesn't want a repeat, and luckily Alistair won't let anyone get between him and his mate. Alistair will do anything to protect his lover. Kevin died in their previous life, but Kevin is back, and he may hold the key to everything Alistair and his brothers lost, which is why a sworn enemy wants his mate kidnapped and killed. Alistair hasn't wielded his sword in a long time, but for his mate and unborn child, taking up the blade and being the protector he used to be comes all too easy. Marcy Jacks is a Siren-exclusive author.

That said, warriors on horseback were key players in the warfare and political fabric of Europe in the Middle Ages. This informative volume highlights key events in the world on the knight, such as the Battle of Agincourt and the Fourth Crusade. A timeline clarifies how and when figures and events fit into the historical record, sidebars supply interesting facts or define key terms, and profiles introduce interesting figures, such as Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd, Sir Henry Percy, and Joan of Arc. Maps, illustrated manuscript details, sculpture, and more illustrate this lively tome.
