Does your mind immediately go to a fictional character with superhuman powers, or do you think of a police officer, firefighter, or military soldier? Maybe you think of a bystander putting their own life in danger while pulling a victim from a car that’s ready to explode. No matter where your mind takes you, heroes come in all shapes, sizes, and various walks of life. Some are hailed by the evening news, and some receive no recognition at all. The common thread among all heroes is that they save someone’s life, usually while making some type of sacrifice of their own. Inside this book are stories of real-life heroes and the people whose lives they touched. They are ordinary people, just like you and me. The general public has no idea what they did, but the person they helped will never forget them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's basically about life in the Streets of San Francisco. We are an international city.As in the rest of America, we are composed of people from all over the world. People pretty much get along here. You can take many examples such as the conflicts of The Protestants & Catholics of G.B. Or the conflicts of Bosnia. Or better yet, more recently: The Shiites & Sunnis in the Middle East. The magic of SF. is the fact that people are not only tolerant of others, but there's no sense of jealosy of others. If one group has ideas on how to live an easier life; instead being jealous of that group, we use the brilliant ideas & apply them for ourselves. In fact, if the rest of the planet thought like we do in SF. Then there would be a real basis for world peace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born into "a certain kind of family"—affluent, white, Protestant—Jane Vandenburgh came of age when the sexual revolution was sweeping the cultural landscape, making its mark in a way that would change our manners and mores forever. But what began as an all–American life soon spun off and went spectacularly awry. Her father, an architect with a prominent Los Angeles firm, was arrested several times for being in gay bars during the 1950s, and only freed when her grandfather paid bribes to the L.A.P.D. He was ultimately placed in a psychiatric hospital to be "cured" of his homosexuality, and committed suicide when she was nine. Her mother—an artist and freethinker—lost custody of her children when she was committed to a mental hospital. The author and her two brothers were raised by an aunt and uncle who had, under one roof, seven children and problems of their own. In the midst of private trauma and loss, Vandenburgh delights in revealing larger truths about American culture and her life within it. Quirky, witty, and uncannily wise, A Pocket History of Sex in the Twentieth Century is a brilliant blend of memoir and cultural revelation.

Book excerpt: The personal story of how a psychiatrist confronts the profound changes sweeping the medical establishment as they reshape her life and career. In the past two decades, a seismic shift has occurred within the walls of our nation's hospitals and doctor's offices. The medical profession- once considered a sacred, cherished vocation-has devolved into a business motivated by a desire for profits. Even psychiatry, once the mainstay of the human interaction between doctor and patient, has fallen victim to rising costs and dictates by insurance sources. How has medicine strayed so far from its roots? In The Kitchen Shrink, psychiatrist and lecturer Dora Calott Wang delves into what happened. Through the prism of her own story, Wang elucidates key events in her professional life-the declining state of hospitals and clinics, the advent of managed care, and the rise of profits at the expense of patient care-that highlight the medical profession's decline. Along the way we meet some of her patients, whose plights reflect the profession's growing indifference to the human lives at risk. There's Selena, whose grief over her mother's death and lack of family support make it difficult for her to take the medicine that keeps her body from rejecting her new liver, and Leonard, a schizophrenic with no health insurance who develops peritonitis and falls into a coma for three months. Each new story brings additional compromises as the medical landscape shifts under Wang's feet. She struggles with depression and exhaustion, witnesses the loss of top doctors who leave in frustration, and attempts to find a balance between work and home as it becomes ever clearer that she cannot untangle the uncertain future of her patients from her own. Part personal story and part rallying cry, The Kitchen Shrink is an unflinchingly honest, passionate, and humane inside look at the unsettling realities of free-market medicine in today's America.

Book excerpt: In I Never Wanted to Be a Princess - Good Thing or How I lost 380 Pounds without Diet or Exercise, the events are true life experiences, including the issues with the chocolate syrup can. It is a love story, in a sense, sometimes sad, sometimes angry, more times humorous, with a little sarcasm and inspiration thrown in for good measure. The intent-to inspire others to keep up the good fight. Punching a forty-pound long bag helps. We all have storms in our lives, and many have had more "him-a-canes" and "her-a-canes" than me, but with perseverance, you can turn the page on a new chapter of your life. Even when things go . . . not so much as planned. My situation is not uncommon but is one of the hardest things I have dealt with. Writing this book has given me the insight and desire to go on and want a better life and "find myself" as they say. By doing so, I have gained a healthier, happier, and more successful life. I managed to get through life's trials and tribulations, even when I ran out of chocolate chips. A sense of humor helps to get through. I prefer jeans and a T-shirt over formal attire but can clean up when needed. I think tomboys have more fun. I can't really judge because I have never been a princess and, most likely, never will be. I begin a diet on Monday and usually quit Monday night or early Tuesday. I rather laugh than cry. I have a deep faith and not going to second-guess that there is a man or woman above that helps us through life with our best interests at heart. I did have a painful weight loss. Tipping the scales broke my heart, but this is not a diet book. Seeing me, you would know I am not a diet expert. From these pages, I hope you are encouraged, get plenty of laughs, and gain a deeper understanding of what it is like to sit on the cold hard toilet seat of life.

Book excerpt: #1 International Bestseller: A frontline trauma surgeon tells his “riveting” true story of operating in the world’s most dangerous war zones (The Times). For more than twenty-five years, surgeon David Nott has volunteered in some of the world’s most perilous conflict zones. From Sarajevo under siege in 1993 to clandestine hospitals in rebel-held eastern Aleppo, he has carried out lifesaving operations in the most challenging conditions, and with none of the resources of a major metropolitan hospital. He is now widely acknowledged as the most experienced trauma surgeon in the world. War Doctor is his extraordinary story, encompassing his surgeries in nearly every major conflict zone since the end of the Cold War, as well as his struggles to return to a “normal” life and routine after each trip. Culminating in his recent trips to war-torn Syria—and the untold story of his efforts to help secure a humanitarian corridor out of besieged Aleppo to evacuate some 50,000 people—War Doctor is a heart-stopping and moving blend of medical memoir, personal journey, and nonfiction thriller that provides unforgettable, at times raw, insight into the human toll of war. “Superb . . . You are constantly amazed that men such as Nott can witness the extraordinary cruelties of the human race, so many and so foul, yet keep going.” —Sunday Times “Gripping and fascinating medical stories.” —Kirkus Reviews
