This book explores the cultural world of racing and its relationship with British society in the long eighteenth century. It examines how and why race meetings changed from a marginal and informal interest for some of the elite to become the most significant leisure event of the summer season. Going beyond sports history, the book firmly places racing in its cultural, social, political and economic context. Racing's development was linked to the growth of commercialized leisure in the eighteenth century, a product of rising wealth amongst the middling group; changes in transport; the expansion of the newspaper press; and the new democratic and individualistic spirit of the age, especially the more flexible social codes of the late Georgian and Regency eras. In this book, horse racing emerges as the first 'proto-modern' sport, with links with the widespread popularity of gaming and betting which forced ever-increasing codification, regulation and event organization. Racing also gave expression to highly nuanced concepts of local, regional, national, class, gender (primarily male) and political identities. Drawing on the fields of social, cultural and sports history and utilizing many hitherto ignored or under-exploited sources, the book revises current histories of eighteenth-century leisure and sport, showing how horse racing links to debates about commercialization, consumer behaviour, the 'urban renaissance' and human-horse relationships. It also sheds new light not only on racehorse ownership, but also on the hitherto hidden world of racing's key professionals: jockeys, trainers, bloodstock breeders, stud grooms and stable hands. This book provides a detailed consideration of the history of racing in British culture and society, and explores the cultural world of racing during the interwar years. The book shows how racing gave pleasure even to the supposedly respectable middle classes and gave some working-class groups hope and consolation during economically difficult times. Regular attendance and increased spending on betting were found across class and generation, and women too were keen participants. Enjoyed by the royal family and controlled by the Jockey Club and National Hunt Committee, racing's visible emphasis on rank and status helped defend hierarchy and gentlemanly amateurism, and provided support for more conservative British attitudes. The mass media provided a cumulative cultural validation of racing, helping define national and regional identity, and encouraging the affluent consumption of sporting experience and a frank enjoyment of betting. The broader cultural approach of the first half of the book is followed by an exploration if the internal culture of racing itself.

Another reason is that a horse could be out of its depth in other words running in a higher class of race.Most punters want winners every day at any odds this makes them feel good. They think they are making a profit, how wrong they are and the bookmakers take their money every day with a smile on their faces.Another mistake the average punter makes is that they will take current SP starting price of a horse and not look for a larger price. So say a horse is 2/1 that's decimal odds 3.0 on the Betfair betting exchange. They will readily take these odds. A more profitable approach is to take higher odds like decimal odds 3.5. Ok you might think there is not much difference between decimal odds 3.0 and 3.5 but it adds up over a year and that is where your profit is. The only way to profit in horse racing is to back horses at larger odds than what is being offered. The betting exchanges show the true odds of a horse just before the race starts. As these odds are derived from many punters and bookmakers who are using the betting exchanges then the price of the horse before the race starts is its true odds. This price is a consolidated view and it is normally correct and near the mark.This system also finds large priced horses that are placed 1st 2nd 3rd or 4th regularly in a horse race and these can be exploited in the Betfair place market at some juicy odds. I have taken decimal odds of 7.0 on four places in a horse race and mopped up.
