Book Synopsis Horse People by : Rebecca Louise Cassidy
Download or read book Horse People written by Rebecca Louise Cassidy and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world of Thoroughbred racing is glamorous, secretive, dangerous, and seductive—the sport of kings and the poor man's obsession. While the spectacle of racing stirs the imagination, it belies the ruthless business that lies beneath. This engaging original study demystifies this complex world by comparing centers of excellence in Britain and North America. Drawing from intensive field work in Suffolk's Newmarket and Kentucky's Lexington, Rebecca Cassidy gives us the inside track on all players in the industry—from the elite breeders and owners to the stable boys, racetrack workers, and veterinarians. She leads us through horse farms, breeding barns, and yearling sales; explains rigorous training regimens; and brings us trackside on race day. But the history of Thoroughbred racing culture is more than a collection of fascinating characters and exciting events. Cassidy's investigation reveals the factors—ethical, cultural, political, and economic—that have shaped the racing tradition.
Book Synopsis The First Horse People by : Gerald Brefka
Download or read book The First Horse People written by Gerald Brefka and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-10-07 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yumnayas were the ancestors to all the first horse people. The Botai were the first horse people. The Sarmatians were the second horse people. Of all these first tribes, they were the most European-looking with blond hair and blue eyes, even though they all had the same root language given by the Yamnayas. The third was probably the Androvo tribe but would not be heard from in the west until they found the fastest horses in the world in Siberia. The true menace was the fourth tribe, the Scythians, the number 1 competition to the Sarmatians. This is the story of how these tribes interacted with one another. It’s a story with action from beginning to end.

But it is also a sometimes zany work of fiction in which actors put on a play about Darwinian evolution and its political extensions. During the writing and rehearsing of the play, they will be confronted by an evangelical sect that wants to promote creationism and thus stop the play from being performed at all costs. They'll also cross paths with a rich transhumanist industrialist who wants to influence the text... After their previous collaboration on "Extinctions," Alexandre Franc and Jean-Baptiste de Panafieu enlighten and entertain once again!
Book Synopsis Horses, People and Parliament in the English Civil War by : Gavin Robinson
Download or read book Horses, People and Parliament in the English Civil War written by Gavin Robinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horses played a major role in the military, economic, social and cultural history of early-modern England. This book uses the supply of horses to parliamentary armies during the English Civil War to make two related points. Firstly it shows how control of resources - although vital to success - is contingent upon a variety of logistical and political considerations. It then demonstrates how competition for resources and construction of individuals’ identities and allegiances fed into each other. Resources, such as horses, did not automatically flow out of areas which were nominally under Parliament’s control. Parliament had to construct administrative systems and make them work. This was not easy when only a minority of the population actively supported either side and property rights had to be negotiated, so the success of these negotiations was never a foregone conclusion. The study also demonstrates how competition for resources and construction of identities fed into each other. It argues that allegiance was not a fixed underlying condition, but was something external and changeable. Actions were more important than thoughts and to secure victory, both sides needed people to do things rather than feel vaguely sympathetic. Furthermore, identities were not always self-fashioned but could be imposed on people against their will, making them liable to disarmament, sequestration, fines or imprisonment. More than simply a book about resources and logistics, this study poses fundamental questions of identity construction, showing how culture and reality influence each other. Through an exploration of Parliament’s interaction with local communities and individuals, it reveals fascinating intersections between military necessity and issues of gender, patriarchy, religion, bureaucracy, nationalism and allegiance.
Book Synopsis Human-Horse Relations and the Ethics of Knowing by : Rosalie Jones McVey
Download or read book Human-Horse Relations and the Ethics of Knowing written by Rosalie Jones McVey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how equestrians are highly invested in the idea of profound connection between horse and human and focuses on the ethical problem of knowing horses. In describing how ‘true’ connection with horses matters, Rosalie Jones McVey investigates what sort of thing comes to count as a ‘good relationship’ and how riders work to get there. Drawing on fieldwork in the British horse world, she illuminates the ways in which equestrian culture instils the idea that horse people should know their horses better. Using horsemanship as one exemplary instance where ‘truth’ holds ethical traction, the book demonstrates the importance of epistemology in late modern ethical life. It also raises the question of whether, and how, the concept of truth should matter to multispecies ethnographers in their ethnographic representations of animals.

Download or read book Concise Guide to Respiratory Disease in the Horse written by David W. Ramey and published by Concise Guide. This book was released on 2004 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From simple coughs to chronic heaves, problems with the horse's respiratory tract can be challenging and frustrating to owners and veterinarians. Not only are medical problems affecting the various parts of the respiratory tract quite common, they are also often difficult to diagnose and treat. This valuable guidebook helps illuminate equine respiratory disease by introducing the reader to the anatomy of the horse's respiratory tract and discussing the diagnostic methods and treatments usually used today. Individual chapters are devoted to the upper and lower airways and the four most common diseases of the respiratory tract--"shipping fever," "strangles," "heaves," and "bleeding"--walking the reader through symptoms, causes, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. This guide is the first step in understanding how and why respiratory disease occurs, providing readers the knowledge necessary to intelligently and rationally discuss potential problems with their veterinarians. Its emphasis on preventative care can also help owners examine management practices that may contribute to their horses' health problems. "Your horse," asserts the author, "deserves nothing less."
