Au début des années quatre-vingt, son fonctionnement a fait l'objet de critiques internes qui ont assoupli son fonctionnement. Dans le même temps, des centres d'accueil thérapeutique à temps partiel ont vu le jour, à partir des pratiques groupales en centres médico-psychologiques et il est rapidement apparu que les CATTP n'étaient pas destinés à remplacer les hôpitaux de jour, mais à les compléter. L'hôpital de jour reste le moyen préférentiel de faire face aux pathologies psychotiques, tandis que le CATTP offre plutôt une réponse aux pathologies limites. L'originalité du CATTP pour enfants est de combiner la notion de réseau avec celle de groupes thérapeutiques. L'auteur présente de façon complète et détaillée, aussi bien les hôpitaux de jour que les CATTP, ainsi que leurs nombreuses formes de transition, notamment les unités de soirée. Il propose une vue d'ensemble sur deux types d'institution capables de s'harmoniser. La pédopsychiatrie française dispose ainsi à l'heure actuelle de l'un des continuums les plus perfectionnés, entre la consultation psychiatrique et l'hospitalisation à plein temps.
