Book excerpt: International bestselling author Jeffrey Archer returns with a triumphant historical novel, Paths of Glory. Paths of Glory, is the story of such a man—George Mallory. Born in 1886, he was a brilliant student who became part of the Bloomsbury Group at Cambridge in the early twentieth century and served in the Royal Garrison Artillery during World War I. After the war, he married, had three children, and would have spent the rest of his life as a schoolteacher, but for his love of mountain climbing. Mallory once told a reporter that he wanted to climb Mt. Everest, "because it is there." On his third try in 1924, at age thirty-seven, he was last seen four hundred feet from the top. His body was found in 1999, and it remains a mystery whether he and his climbing partner, Andrew Irvine, ever reached the summit. In fact, not until you've turned the last page of Archer's extraordinary novel will you be able to decide if George Mallory should be added to that list of legends, while another name would have to be removed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I have specified many times, I started life by working for and with others. That is the only way to begin it, if you did not have a silver spoon in your mouth at birth. Imagine wanting to start a business but not having seed money, and without a friend or relative out there to lend you a helping hand. I did not have either advantage from the beginning-no seed money and no helping hand, therefore the only option for me was to work and save to raise some capital myself. Working for others did not only help me raise capital, it also enabled me acquire experiences and ideas which later facilitated immensely in building my own business. These days I see many people going into businesses without first going through some form of training or even serving as apprentices under people with the know-how. That is rather risky, and I do not know why someone would try to do that. Having some foreknowledge in anything we venture to do in life helps to mitigate our risks. Who would risk walking across a river without first finding out how deep it is? And it usually requires someone who has crossed that river before to tell us whether it is deep or shallow. In my case, I worked for others in the import and export industry for many years before starting my company. I had acquired many experiences and thought it was time I brought all that to bear. Having considered a lot of factors, I walked to my boss one day and asked that he accept my resignation. To me, that was more respectful than writing a letter. My boss had been very kind to me, and I felt I should reciprocate his kindness by having a one-on-one discussion with him over my intentions to resign. Although his children's behaviour was rather obnoxious, I thought I needed to maintain a healthy relationship with the man himself since he personally had not offended me in any way. It was very early in the morning when I got to my boss's house. He thought I had come to discuss something concerning my work, but to his dismay, I dropped the bombshell. For some time he was speechless, indicating the level of his perplexity. "I may be leaving, Sir," I said, "but I'll be available to help in any area where my assistance would be needed." Upon this assurance, he gave a deep sigh, and I could very well understand his crestfallen look. We had worked together for a long time and he knew I had played a very critical role in the success of the business. He had confidence in my competencies and my strong work ethic so I could understand how difficult this was for him. "I know you don't mean any harm," my boss said when he finally found his voice, "but I am aware what your exit means to this company." I nodded with my head still bent down. I did not want him to solicit my sympathy with his grief-stricken mood. He begged me to stay for some six months so I could help train someone to take over from me. To prove to him that I did not have any malicious intent, I accepted to do as he had requested. Five months into the training programme, however, I realized it would definitely take longer than six months for the new guy to be well-versed in our operations because he was a bit slow on the uptake. I reported my observations to my boss and this time, he allowed me to go. McDan was started with minimal capital. Though I had some savings, the money that was available at that time was nothing, compared to what I had in mind to do, but I saw some opportunities ahead and I knew I could tap into them. My many years of working in the field had brought me into contact with many friends and acquaintances. I also had an in-depth knowledge of the terrains of Shipping and Logistics. It was, therefore, not difficult for me to acquire certain requisite documents and facilities that I needed to have before I could start operations. I am proud to add that my conduct and high professionalism over the years had also endeared me to many people in authority.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Pulitzer Prize–winning author Jon Meacham explores the seven last sayings of Jesus as recorded in the Gospels, combining rich historical and theological insights to reflect on the true heart of the Christian story. For Jon Meacham, as for believers worldwide, the events of Good Friday and Easter reveal essential truths about Christianity. A former vestryman of Trinity Church Wall Street and St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, Meacham delves into that intersection of faith and history in this meditation on the seven phrases Jesus spoke from the cross. Beginning with “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” and ending with “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit,” Meacham captures for the reader how these words epitomize Jesus’s message of love, not hate; grace, not rage; and, rather than vengeance, extraordinary mercy. For each saying, Meacham composes an essay on the origins of Christianity and how Jesus’s final words created a foundation for oral and written traditions that upended the very order of the world. Writing in a tone more intimate than any of his previous works, Jon Meacham returns us to the moment that transformed Jesus from a historical figure into the proclaimed Son of God, worshiped by billions.

Book excerpt: 2022 BOOKER PRIZE FINALIST “Manifoldly clever…brilliant… ‘Glory’ is its own vivid world, drawn from its own folklore. This is a satire with sharper teeth, angrier, and also very, very funny.” —Violet Kupersmith, The New York Times Book Review "Genius."—#1 New York Times bestselling author Jason Reynolds From the award-winning author of the Booker-prize finalist We Need New Names, an exhilarating novel about the fall of an oppressive regime, and the chaos and opportunity that rise in its wake. NoViolet Bulawayo’s bold new novel follows the fall of the Old Horse, the long-serving leader of a fictional country, and the drama that follows for a rumbustious nation of animals on the path to true liberation. Inspired by the unexpected fall by coup in November 2017 of Robert G. Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s president of nearly four decades, Glory shows a country's imploding, narrated by a chorus of animal voices that unveil the ruthlessness required to uphold the illusion of absolute power and the imagination and bulletproof optimism to overthrow it completely. By immersing readers in the daily lives of a population in upheaval, Bulawayo reveals the dazzling life force and irresistible wit that lie barely concealed beneath the surface of seemingly bleak circumstances. And at the center of this tumult is Destiny, a young goat who returns to Jidada to bear witness to revolution—and to recount the unofficial history and the potential legacy of the females who have quietly pulled the strings here. The animal kingdom—its connection to our primal responses and its resonance in the mythology, folktales, and fairy tales that define cultures the world over—unmasks the surreality of contemporary global politics to help us understand our world more clearly, even as Bulawayo plucks us right out of it. Although Zimbabwe is the immediate inspiration for this thrilling story, Glory was written in a time of global clamor, with resistance movements across the world challenging different forms of oppression. Thus it often feels like Bulawayo captures several places in one blockbuster allegory, crystallizing a turning point in history with the texture and nuance that only the greatest fiction can.

Book excerpt: Rebecca Rusch is one of the great endurance athletes of our time. Known today as the Queen of Pain for her perseverance as a relentlessly fast runner, paddler, and mountain bike racer, Rusch was a normal kid from Chicago who abandoned a predictable life for one of adventure. In her new book Rusch to Glory: Adventure, Risk & Triumph on the Path Less Traveled, Rusch weaves her fascinating life's story among the exotic locales and extreme conditions that forged an extraordinary athlete from ordinary roots. Rusch has run the gauntlet of endurance sports over her career as a professional athlete-- climbing, adventure racing, whitewater rafting, cross-country skiing, and mountain biking--racking up world championships along the way. But while she might seem like just another superhuman playing out a fistful of aces, her empowering story proves that anyone can rise above self-doubt and find their true potential. First turning heads with her rock climbing and paddling skills, Rusch soon found herself spearheading adventure racing teams like Mark Burnett's Eco-Challenge series. As she fought her way through the jungles of Borneo, raced camels across Morocco, threaded the rugged Tian Shan mountains, and river-boarded the Grand Canyon in the dead of winter, she was forced to stare down her own demons. Through it all, Rusch continually redefined her limits, pushing deep into the pain cave and emerging ready for the next great challenge. At age 38, Rusch faced a tough decision: retire or reinvent herself yet again. Determined to go for broke, she shifted her focus to endurance mountain bike racing and rode straight into the record books at a moment when most athletes walk away. Rusch to Glory is more than an epic story of adventure; it is a testament to the rewards of hard work, determination, and resilience on the long road to personal and professional triumph.

Book excerpt: Can God be good when life is not? Rediscover faith in the character, power, and presence of God. Even in the questions. Even in the hurt. "I want to believe, I want to have hope, but . . ." Pastor and bestselling author Craig Groeschel hears these words often and has asked them himself. We want to know God, feel his presence, and trust that he hears our prayers, but in the midst of great pain, we may wonder if he really cares about us. Even when we have both hope and hurt, sometimes it's the hurt that shouts the loudest. In Hope in the Dark, Groeschel explores the story of the father who brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus, saying, "I believe! Help my unbelief!" In the man's sincere plea, Jesus heard the tension in the man's battle-scarred heart. He healed not only the boy but the father too, driving out the hopelessness that had overtaken him. He can do the same for us today. As Groeschel shares his pain surrounding the health challenges of his daughter, he acknowledges the questions we may ask in our own deepest pain: "Where was God when I was being abused?" "Why was my child born with a disability?" "Why did the cancer come back?" "Why are all my friends married and I'm alone?" He invites us to wrestle with such questions as we ask God to honor our faith and heal our unbelief. Because in the middle of your profound pain, you long for authentic words of understanding and hope. You long to know that even in overwhelming reality, you can still believe that God is good. Hope in the Dark is also available in Spanish, Esperanza en la Oscuridad.

Book excerpt: For years Christians have been asking, "If you died tonight, do you know where you would go?" It turns out that many believers have been giving the wrong answer. It is not heaven. Award-winning author N. T. Wright outlines the present confusion about a Christian's future hope and shows how it is deeply intertwined with how we live today. Wright, who is one of today's premier Bible scholars, asserts that Christianity's most distinctive idea is bodily resurrection. He provides a magisterial defense for a literal resurrection of Jesus and shows how this became the cornerstone for the Christian community's hope in the bodily resurrection of all people at the end of the age. Wright then explores our expectation of "new heavens and a new earth," revealing what happens to the dead until then and what will happen with the "second coming" of Jesus. For many, including many Christians, all this will come as a great surprise. Wright convincingly argues that what we believe about life after death directly affects what we believe about life before death. For if God intends to renew the whole creation—and if this has already begun in Jesus's resurrection—the church cannot stop at "saving souls" but must anticipate the eventual renewal by working for God's kingdom in the wider world, bringing healing and hope in the present life. Lively and accessible, this book will surprise and excite all who are interested in the meaning of life, not only after death but before it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This page-turning combination of business book and adventure saga tells the tale of the Ford Motor Company’s” 2016 triumph at Le Mans (The New York Times, “10 New Books We Recommend This Week”). At the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, Ford unveiled a new car—and the automotive world lost its collective mind. This wasn’t some new Explorer or Focus. Onto the stage rolled a carbon-fiber GT powered by a six-cylinder Ecoboost engine that churned out over 600 horsepower. It was sexy and jaw dropping, but, more than that, it was a callback to the legendary Ford GT40 Mk IIs that stuck it to Ferrari and finished 1-2-3 at Le Mans in 1966. Detroit was back, and Ford was going back to Le Mans. Matthew DeBord, a veteran auto industry journalist, tells the incredible story of Ford’s resurgence in Return to Glory. A decade ago, CEO Alan Mulally took over the iconic company and, thanks to his “One Ford” plan, helped it weather the financial crisis without a government bailout. DeBord revisits the story of the 1960s, details the creation of the new GT, and follows the team through the racing season—from Daytona to Sebring and Laguna Seca in Monterey. Finally, DeBord joins the Ford team in Le Mans in June 2016. This fabled twenty-four-hour endurance race is designed to break cars and drivers, and it was at Le Mans, fifty years after the company’s greatest triumph, that Ford’s comeback was put to the ultimate test.
