Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hopelessly Alien is an in-depth study of Italian immigration to Chicago Heights, Illinois, between 1910 and 1950. Drawing upon oral histories, interviews, historical documents, and census materials, Louis Corsino examines the critical concept of hope, which most immigration studies have cast in privatized, psychological terms as the motivation to emigrate in search of a better life. This investigation offers a more contentious, sociological perspective, depicting hope as both an ideological lure to recruit and manage the "foreign element" and as a resource immigrants employed to purchase acceptance and avoid a disparaging label as a "hopelessly alien" stranger. These dialectical processes are illustrated through the Italian immigrants' pursuit of occupational mobility and homeownership, and the appropriation of their children's hopes. Each became forms of cultural capital that demonstrated a public commitment to the American ethos of "joyful striving." Each provided measures of success, but these individual pursuits came at the expense of upsetting the necessary tension between individual and communal hopes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alien Hearts was the last book that Guy de Maupassant finished before his death at the early age of forty-three. It is the most original and psychologically penetrating of his several novels, and the one in which he attains a truly tragic perception of the wounded human heart. André Mariolle is a rich, handsome, gifted young man who cannot settle on what to do with himself. Madame de Burne, a glacially dazzling beauty, wants Mariolle to attend her exclusive salon for artists, composers, writers, and other intellectuals. At first Mariolle keeps his distance, but then he hits on the solution to all his problems: caring for nothing in particular, he will devote himself to being in love; Madame de Burne will be his everything. Soon lover and beloved are equally lost within a hall of mirrors of their common devising. Richard Howard’s new English translation of this complex and brooding novel—the first in more than a hundred years—reveals the final, unexpected flowering of a great French realist’s art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A trio of mind-blowing explorations of space and time from a multiple Hugo and Nebula Award–winning author, “one of science fiction’s most revered writers” (USA Today). For SFWA Grand Master Poul Anderson, humanity’s expansion into space exploration was the logical extension of the principle of individual liberty and a natural response to profound existential curiosity. He remained endlessly fascinated by the possibilities of limitless frontiers, penning “more milestones in contemporary science fiction and fantasy than any one man is entitled to” (Stephen Donaldson). Here are three of Anderson’s most memorable tales of time and space travel. There Will Be Time: Born with a strange genetic mutation, Jack Havig can travel backward and forward in time at will. He’s journeyed to ancient Rome and the Wild West—and into the far future, to a world nearly obliterated by nuclear war. But after he is admitted into a secret time-traveling organization, he stumbles upon a horrific plot to irrevocably alter the destiny of humankind. The Enemy Stars: In the twenty-third century, four astronauts hailing from different worlds have been entrusted to explore a long-dead star located light-years beyond where humanity has previously traveled. But when the black sun’s magnetic field destroys their only means of returning home, these four strangers must work together to survive—or together they will perish. Fire Time: Fire Time is coming to Ishtar. This once-in-a-millennium environmental catastrophe occurs when one of the planet’s three suns encroaches on Ishtar’s surface. Indigenous nomadic tribes, desperate to escape scorched homelands that will be rendered uninhabitable, have declared war on their more civilized brethren to claim their territory. Caught in the middle are human colonists from Earth, searching for a solution to both civil war and an approaching apocalypse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Major Statement on Christology from Bishop Robert Barron For a long time, Christians have tried to bridge the divide between Christianity and secular liberalism with philosophy and theology. Bishop Robert Barron shows that the answer to this debate--and the way to move forward--lies in Jesus. Barron transcends the usual liberal/conservative or Protestant/Catholic divides with a postliberal Catholicism that brings the focus back on Jesus as revealed in the New Testament narratives. Barron's classical Catholic postliberalism will be of interest to a broad audience including not only the academic community but also preachers and general readers interested in entering the dialogue between Catholicism and postliberalism. The hardcover edition includes a new preface by the author. Praise for The Priority of Christ "Barron's wonderful book The Priority of Christ brings postliberalism back to its Catholic home. . . . A downright lovely book, written with a kind of winsome literary flair that exhibits the inviting clarity of a master teacher. Highly recommended." --James K. A. Smith, Religious Studies Review "The book is full of gems worthy of hours of contemplation." --Mark G. Boyer, The Priest

Book excerpt: Im glad Im alive. Doris Louise Bailey, a teen in the Prohibition era, writes this sentiment over and over in her diaries as she struggles with a life-threatening bout of scarlet fever. But its also an apt summation of how she lived in the years following her brush with death. Reaching for the Moon: More Diaries of a Roaring Twenties Teen (1927-1929) contains Doriss true-life adventures as she flirts with boys, sneaks sips of whiskey and bets on racehorses breaking rules and hearts along the way. In Portland, Oregon, shes the belle of the ball, enjoying the attention of several handsome gents. In Arizona, she rides a wild strawberry roan, winning races and kissing cowboys. From hospital wards and petting parties to rodeos and boarding school, this older, more complex Doris faces the dawning of the Depression and her own emergence as a young adult with even more humor, passion and love of life than she showed in her earlier diaries. Readers of all ages will relate to her pursuit of true love, freedom, and adventure in her own time and on her own terms.
