For a month in March, college basketball expands far beyond the hard-court into living rooms and offices, while cultivating the spirit of sport and bringing out the competitive nature in men and women from all walks of life and with all types of hoops IQ.This "personal coach in a pocket" is exactly that-a one-stop shop for collegebasketball experts and enthusiasts as well as bracket novices filling out their Sweet Sixteen as a bonding ritual with friends and family.Through 99 practical points - some based on seasonal trends and coaching records and others based on the deciding factors novices use in picking winners like favorite colors, best-looking coeds and best mascots-this book offers something for every NCAA Tournament participant. The NCAA Tournament is about Roy Williams' record in games decided by five points or less. It is also about which high school a certain player went to or how much an individual liked a certain school's sorority party. As much as experts cringe, there is no flawless system to the perfect bracket pool. The 99 Series offers the best combination of analysis and anecdotes, success stories and satire to paint the portrait of a sports institution helping men and women of all levels fill out their own perfect bracket pool.So when you're up at midnight with work just six hours away and Texas - the team you have winning the national title - can't seem to put away a small school from central Wisconsin, you will be prepared for March's complete Madness.

Book excerpt: From its early days as a sport to build “muscular Christianity” among young men flooding nineteenth-century cities to its position today as a global symbol of American culture, basketball has been a force in American society. It grew through high school gymnasiums, college pep rallies, and the fits and starts of professionalization. It was a playground game, an urban game, tied to all of the caricatures that were associated with urban culture. It struggled with integration and representations of race. Today, basketball’s influence seeps into film, music, dance, and fashion. Hoops tells the story of the reciprocal relationship between the sport and the society that received it. While many books have celebrated specific aspects of the game, Thomas Aiello presents the only contemporary cultural history of the sport from the street to the highest levels of professional mens and womens competition. He argues that the game has existed in a reciprocal relationship with the broader culture, both embodying conflicts over race, class, and gender and serving a s public theater for them. Aiello places cultural icons like Bill Russell, Michael Jordan, and Kobe Bryant in the context of their times and explores how the sport negotiated controversies and scandals. Hoops belongs on the bookshelf of every reader interested in the history of basketball, sports, race, urban life, and pop culture in America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a fascinating, well-researched, and thorough discussion of the connections between science and spirituality, including religion. It is eye-opening and allows readers to truly redefine how they look at these disciplines while providing, at the same time, a vibrant perspective for those embarking on such an exercise for the first time. Science investigates the physical world, where space, time, and matter comprise the main aspects of its empirical approach, that is, of physically proving all that there is around us. Spirituality goes beyond the physical. Here, physical quantities become nonexistent and so our connections are perceived through seemingly nonrational (but hardly irrational) unscientific means. Religion is rendered useless as a way of explaining how the universe works. Quantum mechanics, an integral part of modern physics, is helping to bring about a closer convergence by showing remarkable similarities between advanced scientific observations and what has been taught for centuries in the wisdom traditions, known as spirituality; this insightful information continues to amaze us like none before. We therefore now have the right combination and evidence to show why the gap between science and spirituality must be bridged, so that we can finally embrace the answers to the mystery questions about the universe and life. This thought-provoking book provides the details you need. We stand on the verge of heralding a new paradigm or, rather, a metaparadigm – the mother of all paradigms – one that unfolds a new vision of reality that includes consciousness for the first time, not excludes it – as science still does. Whether you belong to a religion or not, are a spiritualist, an atheist, an agnostic, or just curious about the universe and life, this book is for you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly everyone in America is interested in sports. However, many people are becoming disenchanted. Media coverage is dominated by scandalous stories involving many of Americas best known figures in nearly all major sports. Fans have come to see professional athletes, in general, as being overpaid, immature and obnoxious. Ticket prices have become outrageously exorbitant. Many fans feel that they have been betrayed by something that they once held so dear. One Fan Left Behind, written by a typical, longtime sports fan, speaks to and for those fans. Some of the issues addressed are controversial and may serve as catalysts for further thought. Many dubious things about sports are blithely taken for granted. For instance, did you ever wonder why it is that if a basketball player is fouled in the act of shooting 25 feet from the basket, (a shot which he was probably going to miss anyway) he gets to move ten feet closer to the hoop to shoot three free throws? But if he is fouled in the act of shooting a lay up, (a shot which he rarely misses) he has to move several feet further from the basket to shoot only two free throws. One Fan Left Behind is written in a style which is lighthearted, entertaining and at times, tongue-in-cheek. Portions could be used as a stand-up comedy routine. Other segments can be described as nostalgic, poignant and/or deadly serious. The topic is singularly timely. So many things happen every day that it was difficult for the author to finish writing this book. He had to simply drop the pencil and stop writing. The story is still unfolding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With "virtuosic vulnerability" (The Atlantic), the iconic bassist and Red Hot Chili peppers co-founder pens a love letter to a youth spent wild in Los Angeles in his raw and riveting coming-of-age memoir. In Acid for the Children, Flea takes readers on a deeply personal and revealing tour of his formative years, spanning from Australia to the New York City suburbs to, finally, Los Angeles. Through hilarious anecdotes, poetical meditations, and occasional flights of fantasy, Flea deftly chronicles the experiences that forged him as an artist, a musician, and a young man. His dreamy, jazz-inflected prose makes the Los Angeles of the 1970s and 80s come to gritty, glorious life, including the potential for fun, danger, mayhem, or inspiration that lurked around every corner. It is here that young Flea, looking to escape a turbulent home, found family in a community of musicians, artists, and junkies who also lived on the fringe. He spent most of his time partying and committing petty crimes. But it was in music where he found a higher meaning, a place to channel his frustration, loneliness, and love. This left him open to the life-changing moment when he and his best friends, soul brothers, and partners-in-mischief came up with the idea to start their own band, which became the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Acid for the Children is the debut of a stunning new literary voice, whose prose is as witty, entertaining, and wildly unpredictable as the author himself. It's a tenderly evocative coming-of-age story and a raucous love letter to the power of music and creativity from one of the most renowned musicians of our time. Book excerpt: A few years after its invention by James Naismith, basketball became the primary sport in the crowded streets of the Jewish neighborhood on New York’s Lower East Side. Participating in the new game was a quick and enjoyable way to become Americanized. Jews not only dominated the sport for the next fifty‐plus years but were also instrumental in modernizing the game. Barney Sedran was considered the best player in the country at the City College of New York from 1909 to 1911. In 1927 Abe Saperstein took over management of the Harlem Globetrotters, playing a key role in popularizing and integrating the game. Later he helped found the American Basketball Association and introduced the three-point shot. More recently, Nancy Lieberman played in a men’s pro summer league and became the first woman to coach a men’s pro team, and Larry Brown became the only coach to win both NCAA and the NBA championships. While the influence of Jewish players, referees, coaches, and administrators has gradually diminished since the mid‐1950s, the current basketball scene features numerous Jews in important positions. Through interviews and lively anecdotes from franchise owners, coaches, players, and referees, The Chosen Game explores the contribution of Jews to the evolution of present-day pro basketball.
