Book excerpt: What you are about to read is the first part of a multipart story about my life, parts of my life that involve gangbanging and not just any kind of gangbanging but gangbanging of the deepest type. Gangbanging on the notorious streets of South-Central Los Angeles. Moreover my life evolved from gangbanging to a leading role in America’s drug culture. While these things are true about my life, I want to make one thing very clear: nothing that you are about to read is meant to glorify either gangbanging or drug culture; in fact, it is my sincere hope that the telling of my life story will steer the youth and others away from both paths as they literally lead to dead ends. So if you are reading this, know that if I had it to do all over again, I wish that I had been dealt the kind of cards in life that would have prepared me for an Ivy League college like Harvard, Princeton, Yale, etc. rather than state and federal prison.

Book excerpt: In Hood Legends, Michael Jourdain recounts how two men's ideology changed the world, and greatly influenced his life. He would come to know Stanley "Tookie" Williams, founder of the Crips, through his friendship with his sister, Francine, while he was a young teenager. Tookie's drive to be a powerful leader inspired Michael to start his own crew within the Van Ness Gang.At seventeen, Michael would meet Thomas "Tootie" Reese, the Godfather of black drug kinpins, and was impressed with his tremendous wealth. After he became a member of Tootie's organization, Michael would have all the money that he had ever dreamed of. But the death of his best friend, Raul, to gang violence, changed the course of his life. He was plotting the murder of Raul's killer when the government took his freedom. In prison, education changed Michael's life. He began to understand how his actions and the actions of those he knew and associated with were destroying black neighborhoods, and he became a social activist. His desires changed from wanting to be wealthy by any means necessary to wanting to save underserved neighborhoods from self-destructing, and to help young men and women convert their misguided street ambition into entrepreneurship.

Book excerpt: Witness is an anthology comprising 40 critical essays from an international cast of researchers who engage with a complex set of questions concerning notions of witnessing and attestation in 20th- and 21st-century Western culture. The contributors provide insightful perspectives on the subject of witnessing and suggest how this vital yet relatively unexplored concept lends itself to a wide range of media and subject areas. The essays critically reconsider existing scholarly tendencies which focus on historical evidence and the witness' vocalization of true remembrance. They do this by establishing important links with canonical texts, images, and voices within a theoretical and interpretive framework where questions of mediation, memorization, and representation are addressed.

Book excerpt: Scholars have become increasingly interested in how modern national consciousness comes into being through fictional narratives. Literature is of particular importance to this process, for it is responsible for tracing the nations evolution through glorious tales of its history. In nineteenth-century Britain, the legends of King Arthur and Robin Hood played an important role in construction of contemporary national identity. These two legends provide excellent windows through which to view British culture, because they provide very different perspectives. King Arthur and Robin Hood have traditionally been diametrically opposed in terms of their ideological orientation. The former is a king, a man at the pinnacle of the social and political hierarchy, whereas the latter is an outlaw, and is therefore completely outside conventional hierarchical structures. The fact that two such different figures could simultaneously function as British national heroes suggests that nineteenth-century British nationalism did not represent a single set of values and ideas, but rather that it was forced to assimilate a variety of competing points of view.

Book excerpt: "Except for original pieces about Bob Dylan and Peter, Paul and Mary, the articles compiled here about folk, bluegrass and new acoustic musicians first appeared in Guitar Player and Frets magazines. Most pieces have been updated; they profile the artists' backgrounds, careers and contributions to their musical forms. (The articles on Odetta, Pete Seeger, Bill Monroe and Richie Havens include interviews with the musicians.) Subjects represent different eras of modern folk music: from the early days (Woody Guthrie and Malvina Reynolds) to the height of popularity 25 years ago (the Kingston Trio, Joan Baez and Arlo Guthrie) to new acoustic artists (David Grisman and Tony Trischka). Also of note: an article about the Lomax family, the archivists who have made extensive recordings of folk music that might otherwise have been lost. Although this book gives the novice a general background, it adds little new information."-- Publishers Weekly.
