Book excerpt: A man of extraordinary inner strength and patriotic devotion, General Harold K. Johnson was a soldier's officer, loved by his men and admired by his peers for his leadership, courage, and moral convictions. Lewis Sorley's biography provides a fitting testament to this remarkable man and his dramatic rise from obscurity to become LBJ's Army Chief of Staff during the Vietnam War. A native of North Dakota, Johnson survived more than three grueling years as a POW under the Japanese during World War II before serving brilliantly as a field commander in the Korean War, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for "extraordinary heroism." The latter experiences led to a series of high-level positions that culminated in his appointment as Army chief in 1964 and a cover story in Time magazine. What followed should have been the most rewarding period of Johnson's military career. Instead, it proved to be a nightmare, as he quickly became mired in the politics and ordeal of a very misguided war. Johnson fundamentally disagreed with the three men—LBJ, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, and General William Westmoreland—running our war in Vietnam. He was sharply critical of LBJ's piecemeal policy of gradual escalation and his failure to mobilize the national will or call up the reserves. He was equally despondent over Westmoreland's now infamous search-and-destroy tactics and reliance on body counts to measure success in Vietnam. By contrast, he advocated greater emphasis on cutting the North's supply lines, helping the South Vietnamese provide for their own internal defenses, and sustaining a truly legitimate government in the South. Unheeded, he nevertheless continued to work behind the scenes to correct the nation's flawed approach to the war. Sorley's study adds immeasurably to our understanding of the Vietnam War. It also provides an inspiring account of principled leadership at a time when the American military is seeking to recover the very kinds of moral values exemplified by Harold K. Johnson. As such, it presents a profound morality tale for our own era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WARS CHANGE, WARRIORS DON'T We are all warriors. Each of us struggles every day to define and defend our sense of purpose and integrity, to justify our existence on the planet and to understand, if only within our own hearts, who we are and what we believe in. Do we fight by a code? If so, what is it? What is the Warrior Ethos? Where did it come from? What form does it take today? How do we (and how can we) use it and be true to it in our internal and external lives? The Warrior Ethos is intended not only for men and women in uniform, but artists, entrepreneurs and other warriors in other walks of life. The book examines the evolution of the warrior code of honor and "mental toughness." It goes back to the ancient Spartans and Athenians, to Caesar's Romans, Alexander's Macedonians and the Persians of Cyrus the Great (not excluding the Garden of Eden and the primitive hunting band). Sources include Herodotus, Thucydides, Plutarch, Xenophon, Vegetius, Arrian and Curtius--and on down to Gen. George Patton, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, and Israeli Minister of Defense, Moshe Dayan.

Book excerpt: In Warrior Politics, the esteemed journalist and analyst Robert D. Kaplan explores the wisdom of the ages for answers for today’s leaders. While the modern world may seem more complex and dangerous than ever before, Kaplan writes from a deeper historical perspective to reveal how little things actually change. Indeed, as Kaplan shows us, we can look to history’s most influential thinkers, who would have understood and known how to navigate today’s dangerous political waters. Drawing on the timeless work of Sun Tzu, Thucydides, Machiavelli, Hobbes, among others, Kaplan argues that in a world of unstable states and an uncertain future, it is increasingly imperative to wrest from the past what we need to arm ourselves for the road ahead. Wide-ranging and accessible, Warrior Politics is a bracing book with an increasingly important message that challenges readers to see the world as it is, not as they would like it to be.

What are the duties and obligations of a warrior, and to whom are they owed? What should bring a warrior honor or shame? These and other questions are considered in Shannon French's The Code of the Warrior, a book that explores eight warrior codes from around the globe, spanning such traditions as the Homeric, Roman, and Samurai cultures, through to the present day-culminating in a thoughtful analysis of a timely question: Are terrorists warriors?

Book excerpt: Award-winning author Kao Kalia Yang delivers an inspiring tale of resourceful children confronting adversaries in a refugee camp After lunch the Yang warriors prepare for battle. They practice drills, balance rocks on their heads, wield magical swords from fallen branches. Led by ten-year-old Master Me (whose name means “little”), the ten cousins are ready to defend the family at all costs. After a week without fresh vegetables , the warriors embark on a dangerous mission to look for food, leaving the camp’s boundaries, knowing their punishment would be severe if they were caught by the guards. In this inspiring picture book, fierce and determined children confront the hardships of Ban Vinai refugee camp, where the author lived as a child. Yang’s older sister, seven-year-old Dawb, was one of the story’s warriors, and her brave adventure unfolds here with all the suspense and excitement that held her five-year-old sister spellbound many years later. Accompanied by the evocative and rich cultural imagery of debut illustrator Billy Thao, the warriors’ secret mission shows what feats of compassion and courage children can perform, bringing more than foraged greens back to the younger children and to their elders. In this unforgiving place, with little to call their own, these children are the heroes, offering gifts of hope and belonging in a truly unforgettable way.

He fights for his people’s safety, for a peaceful future, for freedom from the tyranny trying to eliminate him. Heritage has plagued his life and now that legacy hangs on the edge of oblivion. No matter how he got here, he can’t let it fall. Because failure means the end of everything he loves. Caught between obligation and duty, treachery and redemption, Sanjay is powerless to stop the machinations dragging him into war on the wrong side of the battlefield. He can’t fathom opposing his knightly brethren, but when he’s forced to face Oron from the enemy lines, all of his worst nightmares suddenly become reality. Destroy Oron and the knights of Sehaann, or sacrifice all he holds dear. Either choice means Sanjay loses. The persistent rage simmering in Kyren’s soul is now a demon threatening to consume him. Everywhere he turns, the consequences of his failure torment and remind him of how unworthy he is of his elite status. He’s a liability to those he’s sworn to protect and jeopardizes Oron’s battle plans at the worst possible moment. If he can’t control his seething vengeance, he’ll lose much more than his position. He’ll take the world down with him. All William wants is to protect his family. The ones he loves are worth everything to him so he extends his power beyond known limits to help Oron and his army succeed. What he achieves is beyond anyone’s expectation, but it’s more than even an immortal winged warrior can withstand. With godlike energy at his fingertips, he can alter reality to his whim. If he doesn’t obliterate it first. Overwhelmed and under siege, Taj can barely provide for his own community when refugees start arriving from around the country. As casualties mount, his leadership and therapeutic skills are stretched to the brink. But nothing prepares him for the horror of battle, where seconds mean the difference between life and death. Not even a gifted healer can save everyone. And sometimes, seconds are a luxury that no one can afford. Everyone’s spent a lifetime giving all they have to fight for what they believe in. Now is when they find out if it’s enough. This work is intended for a mature audience and contains mature content.
