Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Honoring the Elderly, author and Presbyterian minister Brian L. De Jong combines biblical insights with practical advice for eldercare. His work shows you both the importance and the realities of caring for your aging parents or other loved ones. De Jong recognized the need for Honoring the Elderly after speaking with the adult Sunday school class at his church. Many families had elderly parents who needed help but didn't know how to begin such an enormous undertaking. De Jong hopes that his work can illuminate the biblical teachings and prepare caregivers to manage the day-to-day practicalities of taking care of aging loved ones. He covers the following: The challenge issued by the fifth commandment The examples the Bible gives of eldercare The team approach to caring for aging family members The issues that come with retirement, illness, and mental decline The tricks to dealing with difficult parents The spiritual side of aging The intricacies of ethical decision making The pros and cons of assisted living homes The importance of preparing for loss and achieving closure With insightful questions at the end of each section, Honoring the Elderly is a valuable resource for couples, families, and classes discussing eldercare.

Download or read book Honor Thy Aging Father and Mother written by Hank Flick and published by Tate Publishing & Enterprises. This book was released on 2015-12-29 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have we forgotten to give honor to whom honor is due (Romans 13:7)? I hope not. Love nourishes us. Forgiveness defines us. Jesus said, "If ye love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15). Don't argue with God. His fifth commandment is to be obeyed forever (1 John 3:22). Irish writer C. S. Lewis said, "God whispers to us all in good and bad times, but are we listening?" In Honor Thy Aging Father and Mother, the focus is on obeying the fifth commandment related to honoring good and bad parents. My book has four sections: 1. Christian Maturity. God wants us to mature in our faith (Ephesians 4:13). 2. God Commandments. The Ten Commandments empower us to find a path to inner peace (John 14:27). 3. Teamwork. God, parents, and children are to work together for the sake of bearing fruit that glorifies God (Ephesians 6:2-3). 4. Parents at Their Best and Worst in Representing God. In the best of times, parents serve as God's representatives, teachers, messengers, and interpreters within the home. In the worst of times, children's lives are filled with hurt, misery, and abuse. My recommendations ask a lot, maybe too much. My suggestions regarding our relationship with our aging parents are these: * Good parents are to be loved and honored forever (Colossians 3:20; 1 Corinthians 1:13). * Bad parents are to be honored too. As they grow old, we are to let go of the hurt and forgive them for not being perfect (Colossians 3:13; Luke 17:3; Romans 5:8). * We are to never stop loving those who gave us life. Parenting is a calling that embodies skills many parents are without. These observations lead to the question: Why honor bad parents? Read! My answer is within this book.

Leslie Leyland Fields and Dr. Jill Hubbard invite you to walk with them as they explore the following questions: What does the Bible say about forgiveness? Why must we forgive at all? How do we honor those who act dishonorably toward us, especially when those people are as influential as our parents? Can we ever break free from the “sins of our fathers”? What does forgiveness look like in the lives of real parents and children? Does forgiveness mean I have to let an estranged parent back into my life?
