Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Honoring the Elderly, author and Presbyterian minister Brian L. De Jong combines biblical insights with practical advice for eldercare. His work shows you both the importance and the realities of caring for your aging parents or other loved ones. De Jong recognized the need for Honoring the Elderly after speaking with the adult Sunday school class at his church. Many families had elderly parents who needed help but didn't know how to begin such an enormous undertaking. De Jong hopes that his work can illuminate the biblical teachings and prepare caregivers to manage the day-to-day practicalities of taking care of aging loved ones. He covers the following: The challenge issued by the fifth commandment The examples the Bible gives of eldercare The team approach to caring for aging family members The issues that come with retirement, illness, and mental decline The tricks to dealing with difficult parents The spiritual side of aging The intricacies of ethical decision making The pros and cons of assisted living homes The importance of preparing for loss and achieving closure With insightful questions at the end of each section, Honoring the Elderly is a valuable resource for couples, families, and classes discussing eldercare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have we forgotten to give honor to whom honor is due (Romans 13:7)? I hope not. Love nourishes us. Forgiveness defines us. Jesus said, "If ye love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15). Don't argue with God. His fifth commandment is to be obeyed forever (1 John 3:22). Irish writer C. S. Lewis said, "God whispers to us all in good and bad times, but are we listening?" In Honor Thy Aging Father and Mother, the focus is on obeying the fifth commandment related to honoring good and bad parents. My book has four sections: 1. Christian Maturity. God wants us to mature in our faith (Ephesians 4:13). 2. God Commandments. The Ten Commandments empower us to find a path to inner peace (John 14:27). 3. Teamwork. God, parents, and children are to work together for the sake of bearing fruit that glorifies God (Ephesians 6:2-3). 4. Parents at Their Best and Worst in Representing God. In the best of times, parents serve as God's representatives, teachers, messengers, and interpreters within the home. In the worst of times, children's lives are filled with hurt, misery, and abuse. My recommendations ask a lot, maybe too much. My suggestions regarding our relationship with our aging parents are these: * Good parents are to be loved and honored forever (Colossians 3:20; 1 Corinthians 1:13). * Bad parents are to be honored too. As they grow old, we are to let go of the hurt and forgive them for not being perfect (Colossians 3:13; Luke 17:3; Romans 5:8). * We are to never stop loving those who gave us life. Parenting is a calling that embodies skills many parents are without. These observations lead to the question: Why honor bad parents? Read! My answer is within this book.

Book excerpt: Gayle Jackson in his remarkable book, Honoring Parents, has given us a biblically based book on why and how to honor our parents. Gayle has taken personal stories and imported them with scripture that gives us a book to be read and used. Topics such as aging parents, forgiveness, relationship commitment and responsibility are invaluable. The nobility of honoring our parents is a reflection of our love of God. Karen Loritts As you read this book, you will discover Gayle brings a biblical worldview to the subject. This come from years of giving attention to the needs of the parents of Connie and him, possibly to a degree that most will never be called to replicate. If you want a biblical perspective on parenting, coupled with years of personal experience, this is the book to read. Walt Henrichsen The book's principles helped us think through so many personal decisions in a Biblical way. It was not the easiest way but it was the best. Read this book carefully to gain strength and encouragement if you are now the "care-taker." No matter who you are or what stage of life you are in, Gayle's well thought out principles are important today. Patsy Harley My friend Gayle Jackson has written a much-needed book that is borne out of his rich knowledge of Scripture and his diligent application of biblical principles in his relationship with his parents. Honoring Your Parents offers a wealth of perceptive lessons and principles that impart wisdom on this very practical but often neglected area. The metamorphosis of honor in this book offers an excellent and original model as well. Ken Boa At once Biblically centered and engagingly personal, Gayle Jackson's book on honoring your parents is a must-read for anyone with aging parents. Janna Kay Henrichsen, PHD

Book excerpt: “If our families are to flourish, we will need to learn and practice ways of forgiving those who have had the greatest impact upon us: our mothers and fathers.” Do you struggle with the deep pain of a broken relationship with a parent? Leslie Leyland Fields and Dr. Jill Hubbard invite you to walk with them as they explore the following questions: What does the Bible say about forgiveness? Why must we forgive at all? How do we honor those who act dishonorably toward us, especially when those people are as influential as our parents? Can we ever break free from the “sins of our fathers”? What does forgiveness look like in the lives of real parents and children? Does forgiveness mean I have to let an estranged parent back into my life? Is it possible to forgive a parent who has passed away? Through the authors’ own compelling personal stories combined with a fresh look at the Scriptures, Forgiving Our Fathers and Mothers illustrates and instructs in the practice of authentic forgiveness, leading you away from hate and hurt toward healing, hope, and freedom. "A call to very hard, but very vital, work of the soul." —Dr. Henry Cloud, leadership expert, psychologist, and best-selling author "Forgiving Our Fathers and Mothers is essential reading for anyone who wants to deal with those hurts in a constructive, healing, and God-honoring manner." —Jim Daly, president, Focus on the Family "Leslie Leyland Fields and Jill Hubbard take us into raw, messy stories so we can be transformed by that mysterious and painful grace in the force called forgiveness." —Scot McKnight, Northern Seminary
