Book excerpt: The success of Asian economies (first Japan, then Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and, more recently, China and India) has made it tempting to look for an Asian model of development. However, the strength of Asian development lies less in strategies that reproduce successful national systems of innovation and more in the capacity for institutional change to open up new development trajectories with greater emphasis on knowledge and learning. The select group of contributors demonstrate that although there are important differences among Asian countries in terms of institutional set.

Download or read book The Emerging Asian Bond Market written by Ismail Dalla and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a comprehensive survey of the East Asian bond markets, identifies best practices for fostering their development, and presents a broad agenda for further reforms. East Asia's spectacular economic performance over the past several decades has been marked by macroeconomic stability, consistent growth, low inflation, the lowering of trade barriers, and an overall improvement in living standards. The region now has a well developed banking system and boasts four of the top 20 stock markets in the world. Its bond markets, however, are relatively small and at an early stage of development. This report provides a comprehensive survey of the East Asian bond markets, identifies best practices for fostering their development, and presents a broad agenda of reforms for their further development. The report, which is based on studies of bond markets in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, finds great diversity among those markets. It was presented at the Emerging Asian Bond Market Conference, co-sponsored by the World Bank and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and held in Hong Kong, June 26-27, 1995. It is believed that with the proper institutional prerequisites in place, the markets will grow very rapidly and become a leading source of financing for the region. "The [study] and this conference mark the World Bank's increasing support and participation in the development of bond markets in the region." --Joseph Yam, Chief Executive, Hong Kong Monetary Authority

Download or read book Innovative and Creative Industries in Hong Kong written by Grace L K Leung and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-29 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experience of Hong Kong’s innovative and creative industries and the challenges they face serves as an important case study for other Chinese and Asian cities that are actively developing their innovative and creative industries in the era of globalization. The return of sovereignty over Hong Kong back to China in 1997 has led to both collaboration and competition between the two places in innovative and creative sectors for the Greater China and Asian Regions. Hong Kong has remained unique in spite of the integration, but she has to strike a delicate balance between being simultaneously a Chinese and an international city. This book looks at different innovative and creative industries, such as international art and culture exhibition, innovative technology, digital entertainment, TV and movies, as well as government policy for innovative and creative industries, particularly the changing competitive landscape brought about by the latest Great Bay Area development. Drawing insights from cultural history, innovation economics, cultural policy studies, and cultural geography, this book explores the opportunities and challenges of Hong Kong's innovative and creative industries, in particular after the change of sovereignty in 1997. It demonstrates that the city’s legacy, and heavy government input in capital, do not guarantee their sustainable development. This is a book not only for policymakers or academics interested in innovative and creative industries but also to students contemplating a career in these areas in Hong Kong, the Greater China and the Asian Region.

Book excerpt: Hong Kong SAR’s economy benefitted from a strong cyclical upswing through the first half of 2018, supported by the continued global recovery, buoyant domestic sentiment, and the booming property market. However, near-term risks have significantly increased – including those from trade tensions, tighter global financial conditions, and capital outflows from emerging markets. Also, long-term challenges, including from aging, elevated inequality, and the persistent housing shortage, need to be tackled. Prudent macroeconomic policies and ample buffers are in place to help smoothen the transition and ensure continued stability.
